Sheer Silence
From Gentle Fidelity
The angel said “Go out and stand on the mountain for the Lord is about to pass by.” Now there was a great wind, but the Lord was not in the wind, nor in an earthquake, nor was the Lord in fire, after the fire, the sound of sheer silence.
Silence
in which the wind
is hushed,
in which the earthquake rests,
Silence where even fire
sleeps,
Sheer silence,
cocoon containing all the energy
of wind, earthquake, fire,
Silken wrap
stretching to transparency
shimmering silence
ready to release
the folded song …
Let us pray:
Hear us, Elijah, listen:
throw off your mantle now
that we may look upon and touch
your radiant face-
in our open hands
the mystery, the hidden strength,
gift us, we beg,
with that sheer silence where
now and always
