This is the second of two videos portraying the ministry of Catholic religious sisters.

There are many different ways within the Catholic Church to live out the consecrated life of a religious sister. Just this fall, the one hour-long documentary, “Sisters”, was produced about the ministerial work of five religious sisters, who are living out their path to holiness.

The documentary begins by listening to the story of Sister Karen Schneider, a pediatric emergency nurse at John Hopkins Hospital. Whether it is an international medial mission or a day of work at the Baltimore hospital, Sister Karen attests that God is present with each suffering child she sees.

As Sister Karen says, “I wake up in the morning and think of myself as Sister Karen. I think being a physician is one of the best things we can do as sisters.”

Each of the five featured sisters shares their own vocation of ministry to others. For example, Sister Monica helps young adults restore homes in New Orleans. Another witness is Sister Deirdre, who represents the Sisters of Mercy at the United Nations in New York. Each story illustrates the way which each sister answered the call of Christ, their bridegroom.

In our Living Jesus Chat Room this Sunday, we will discuss these points:

  • Did the particular ministry of any of the sisters stand out to you? How did they fulfil their own particular vocation as a member of the Body of Christ?

  • In this video, the active ministry of the sisters is shown. Would this be possible without a strong prayer life “behind the scenes”, so to speak? What is the balance between work and prayer?

  • During her college years, Sr. Melissa suddenly saw religious life as being on the same playing field as getting married or staying single. Do you feel that many young women see life as a sister as a foreign or unreachable vocation?

To prepare for Sunday’s chat, please watch the recent film “Sisters”, which we will discuss.
