In His Love for Us, Christ Became Vulnerable as an Unborn Child

Roughly half a million people – the majority being youth and young adults – marched on Washington D.C. Wednesday in the March for Life. This year’s theme, adoption, is meant to remind our secular world of the value and joy of human life.

In fact, the story of the Visitation – after which our Order is named – focuses on two unborn children, Jesus and John the Baptist.

The Gospel of Luke reads,

“When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leapt in her womb. Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and cried out in a loud voice: “Blest are you among women and blest is the fruit of your womb. But who am I that the mother of my Lord should come to me? The moment your greeting sounded in my ears, the baby leapt in my womb for joy. Blest is she who trusted that the Lord’s words to her would be fulfilled.”

Our founder writes about the value of children still in their mother’s wombs, using the example of St. Augustine. St. Francis de Sales says:

“When St. Monica was about to give birth to the great St. Augustine, she dedicated him by repeated acts of oblation to the Christian religion and the service of God’s glory. He testifies to this and says that ‘he had already tasted God’s salt within his mother’s womb.’

The story contains a great lesson, for it tells Christian women to offer up to God’s Majesty the fruit of their wombs even before it comes into the world. At such times, God, who accepts the offerings of a humble and willing heart, is wont to inspire a mother’s affections.”

To prepare for Sunday’s chat, please read our article, “Gospel of Life: The Visitation”.

In our Living Jesus Chat Room this Sunday, we will discuss these points:

  • In the Bible, children were seen as a blessing from God, and infertility was considered a curse. Why has the attitude towards children changed so much in our current time?
  • At Christ’s conception, “the word became flesh” as an embryo. What does this tell us about Christ’s great humility and vulnerability?
  • Mary’s pregnancy came about unplanned while she was unmarried. Can her faith in God provide hope for Christian mothers who are considering abortion? In what ways can we provide encouragement to them?
