Today is the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, who appeared to St. Bernadette on February 11, 1858, for the first time. Our Blessed Mother’s message can be summed up as a heavenly confirmation of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception that had just been defined by the Church a few years before. The spiritual message is that of personal conversion.Mary stresses the importance of prayer, especially the rosary. Penance and humility are also part of the message, as well as a message of mercy for sinners and compassion for the sick.
In 1934 a Monastery of the Visitation was established in Lourdes, from a vantage point where the Grotto can be seen.
Bishop Pierre-Paul-Marie Gerlier, 1929-1937, on the day of the establishment of the Visitation in Lourdes in a fatherly exhortation, told of his joy and pride to be able to add a jewel in the crown of the Immaculate Virgin:
” You must be, my daughters, the soul of the pilgrimages. “
