This letter from the Congregation for Consecrated Life is the second in a series, following the initial letter, “Rejoice”.

The letter “Scrutate” invites us “to watch over the human and spiritual destiny.”
“Our gazes are sometimes ‘off’ in virtual worlds”; hence the call to “train our eyes, our ‘soul, a capacity to keep the faith that gives substance to hope”, but also to take care of the human and to “stand in intercessory prayer” . “Scrutinize means the conquering gaze of God for life, about others, about ourselves. A look benevolent, confident, calm, “noted Father Mario Aldegani, superior general of the Congregation of the Josephites of Murialdo, for which the consecrated life should be lived” as a life of love for God and humanity, like the Samaritan woman capable of recognizing her wounds “For Father Lawrence Prices, SCJ, the document also indicates “a new season of the congregation, a place of climate change.”
“Now more than ever – ensures Msgr. Carballo – the world needs men and women who live the gospel, who are prophets and sowers of hope. For this reason, the consecrated life is very current, with a counter-modern feel. “Commenting in his speech on the title of the letter, the Secretary of the department responsible for religious explained that the exhortation “Scrutate” is a step forward compared to “Rejoice” in the course of preparation for the Year of the consecrated life. Fifty years after the Council, consecrated persons are called to remember “a live event where we recognized our deepest identity” and were given a method, “the method of reflection that takes place on the world and on the human story from the Word of God. “The consecrated life “is going through a ford but it can not remain there permanently. We are invited to make the transition with special care “to meet the challenge of the questions that come from the Crossroads of the World”. The consecrated life is called also to identify “new and bold ways to reach all” and to “live with special intensity our intercession.”
