We’ll be talking about the ‘aim in entering religious life’ during our chat session on Sunday. Here are some questions that will guild our reflection: What does it mean that religious are bound to more than simply the observance of the commandments? Is it harder to enter heaven as a religious? If, as Saint Francis states, an extra responsibility is placed on religious, how do we connect that with what Jesus said after speaking with the rich young man: “it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God” (Matthew 19:24)?
How can these questions be more easily answer viewed in light of what Jesus says: “Every one to whom much is given, of him will much be required” (Luke 12:48)?

Sister Susan Marie: s this topic of interest to you? We are trying to keep Year of Consecrated Life in mind

Jan 25 2015, 7:26 PM

Dawn L: Exciting about Leonie Martin. and yes interesting the topic you suggest

Jan 25 2015, 7:26 PM

Sister Susan Marie: Yes we just found out yesterday that her cause is going forward!

Jan 25 2015, 7:27 PM

Dawn L: thank you for posting!

Jan 25 2015, 7:27 PM

Sister Susan Marie: There’s someone who really struggled!

Jan 25 2015, 7:27 PM

Sister Susan Marie: I actually was at Caen at her tomb in 2009; very powerful

8 PM

Sister Susan Marie: She tried several timesto enter religious life

Sister Susan Marie: Great intercessor for troubled children

Dawn L: right, she didn’t -and in spite of her interior struggles and past. that was helpful to read about.

Jan 25 2015, 7:31 PM

Sister Susan Marie: She no doubt grew to know St Francis de Sales trachings very well and he would say the aim of religious life is union with God

Anne M: Why did she have such trouble entering religious life?

Jan 25 2015, 7:32 PM

Sister Susan Marie: Her personality was difficult and she struggled with lots of areas of religious life. There are some short but good books about her

Jan 25 2015, 7:32 PM

Anne M: Oh, I would like to read about her. Sorry, I don’t know much about her other than she was St. Therese’s sister

Jan 25 2015, 7:32 PM

Ruth Cassin: Hello everyone; I signed on earlier, but have been working on something else. I heard that familiar sound when someone posts, and realized what it is — getting started before 7:30.

Sister Susan Marie: One of the books is called A Difficult Life

Sister Susan Marie: The other is God Made the Violet too

Jan 25 2015, 7:33 PM

Sister Susan Marie: Hi Ruth

M

Guest7147 (guest): That sounds like a good book, they both do

Sister Susan Marie: Some even say the housekeeper Mrs Martin had in Leonie’s childhood gave her a very hard time

Jan 25 2015, 7:34 PM

Ruth Cassin: I need to learn more about Leonie.

Sister Susan Marie: Yes you might really understand her from a professional standpoint too!

Jan 25 2015, 7:35 PM

Dawn L: Sr Susan, do you think her struggles to obtain religious life tie in with the topic today?

Jan 25 2015, 7:35 PM

Sister Susan Marie: Actually, yes I think they do!

Anne M: Yes, I think they do. And Leonie did make it in religious life. 36 PM

Ruth Cassin: I wish I hadn’t used FB to sign in; they keep putting pop-ups in front of the chat!

Jan 25 2015, 7:37 PM

Sister Susan Marie: She tried different places but the main interest for me is that she ended up a Visitation NUn while all her sisters were Carmelites

Jan 25 2015, 7:37 PM

Anne M:

Jan 25 2015, 7:37 PM

Ruth Cassin: I like that, Sr Susan

Jan 25 2015, 7:37 PM

Dawn L: hi Ruth, I had the same problem. Kevin, the webmaster ? said it might be from malware.

Jan 25 2015, 7:37 PM

Sister Susan Marie: So she will be another beatified Visitandine, hopefully and also draw our 2 orders closer

M

Ruth Cassin: That’s wonderful, Sr. Susan Marie — I mean about having more beatified Visitandines.

Jan 25 2015, 7:40 PM

Sister Susan Marie: I think that she is a good model because if as the question implies or asks, is it harder for religious to get into heaven…she had a hard time just being a religious at first

Sister Susan Marie: Right now we have 4 active causes before the Holy See; Leonie, Ven Anne Madeleine, Ven Margrit and Madre Icaza

Carol Ann: Hello Everyone! I see we have been speaking of Leonie. I ask her for help all the time.

Jan 25 2015, 7:42 PM

2015, 7:45 PM

Ruth Cassin: And guess, what, my Jewish friend, Miriam, (formerly Catholic, a Catholic School graduate) when I asked her when she called during the chat last week while I was in a hotel room to call a little later, she became interested in our topic and thought she’d like to participate — Now there is room enough.

Jan 25 2015, 7:45 PM

Sister Susan Marie: Oh yes now we can hold 100!!!

Jan 25 2015, 7:45 PM

Sister Susan Marie: Too many but that’s how they do it-

:45 PM

Ruth Cassin: Great!

Jan 25 2015, 7:46 PM

Dawn L: wow from 10 to 100!

Jan 25 2015, 7:46 PM

Carol Ann: I am glad your brother is better. I think inner healing takes longer than outer!

Jan 25 2015, 7:46 PM

Ruth Cassin: Yes, I find it hard even with this number.

7 PM

Sister Susan Marie: If one really thinks religious are more accountable I would think that might put fearful souls off from entering7

R

Jan 25 2015, 7:48 PM

Carol Ann: It is. But is it the world that is holding us to a higher standard or is it Jesus?

Sister Susan Marie: One has to trust in God’s grace and always in His Will- can’t really move away from that

Jan 25 2015, 7:49 PM

Sister Susan Marie: Good question Carol Ann!

Carol Ann: Because I’m pretty sure Jesus holds us harder because we vowed to come closer, and so we must be even more like Him. But I also find that people hold me to their higher standard of whatever they think a Sister should be.

Jan 25 2015, 7:50 PM

Ruth Cassin: Sometimes I think you have to do things and say things that “the world” considers weird or worse in order to be a good Christian.

Anne M: When reproving the pharisees, didn’t the Lord tell them that if he had not come and told them they would have no sin. Then religious, who receive daily formation… would logically be held to this rule. The Lord is teaching you every day.

J

Ruth Cassin: But that applies not just to religious.

Jan 25 2015, 7:53 PM

Sister Susan Marie: People do tend to put religious, at least in the past, on a pedestal. But Jesus would not do that as He wants us to be humble

Sister Susan Marie: And in fact ALL Christians are to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world

5 PM

Carol Ann: I think people still do put religious on pedestals. Religious are not allowed to make mistakes or exhibit “personality”

Jan 25 2015, 7:55 PM

Guest7147 (guest): Yes, they are

Guest7147 (guest): I mean, all Christians are called to be salt of the earth and light of the world

Jan 25 2015, 7:56 PM

Carol Ann: Yes, and so we should not put that responsibility solely on religious people.

Jan 25 2015, 7:56 PM

Sister Susan Marie: In fact Carol Ann, even when a candidate is discerning they might tend to put the community they are looking at on a pedestal too I know that has happened here

6 PM

Carol Ann: Yes, and so we should not put that responsibility solely on religious people.

Carol Ann: Yes, I believe I have experienced what you are speaking of.

Jan 25 2015, 7:57 PM

Ruth Cassin: I’ve had a dream, maybe it was a waking dream, I’m not sure any more: I was struggling to follow in the footstep of Jesus, through deep snow, thankful that the footprints made it a bit easier than if I had to trudge along without them. The prints disappeared into the distance, and fresh snow came and completely obliterated them; perhaps I had died; but I felt happily peaceful.

Jan 25 2015, 7:57 PM

Guest7147 (guest): When I made the retreat at the Visitation Monastery the nuns were so nice

Jan 25 2015, 7:57 PM

Sister Susan Marie: I am often of the opinion tho that those in religious life may often be weaker souls who need Jesus more or outwardly more anyway

Carol Ann: Sister, I had never thought of it that way, but Leonie chased after Him with all her heart and soul and mind and body, and wanted to be cloistered with him so badly. It hurts to think how long she was denied.

Jan 25 2015, 7:59 PM

Sister Susan Marie: Interesting dream, Ruth

Carol Ann: Do you sense Ruth, where you were headed in the dream?

Jan 25 2015, 7:59 PM

Ruth Cassin: Thanks, Sister.

Jan 25 2015, 7:59 PM

Guest7147 (guest): No, I made the retreat in Mobile, Alabama years ago, but I never forgot the experience

Jan 25 2015, 7:59 PM

Sister Susan Marie: Jesus made it all work out -she may be a saint!

:01 PM

01 PM

Ruth Cassin: Talking at meals! That’s unusual, right?

Jan 25 2015, 8:02 PM

Sister Susan Marie: Yes- we mostly keep silence at meals

Jan 25 2015, 8:02 PM

Ruth Cassin: Do you have readings during meals?

Jan 25 2015, 8:02 PM

Anne M: today I wouldn’t have a problem with that. Laryngitis

Jan 25 2015, 8:03 PM

Sister Susan Marie: A birthday for one Sisters and a Feast Day for another, yesterday But today the birthday Sister had to go to the hospital Sr Rosemarie is her name

Jan 25 2015, 8:03 PM

Sister Susan Marie: Yes we read at dinner and supper

Jan 25 2015, 8:04 PM

Ruth Cassin: Sr. Rosemarie; I’ll pray for her, too.

Jan 25 2015, 8:05 PM

Sister Susan Marie: This is a fantastic Salesian CD: https://www.nowyouknowmedia.com/professors/dr-wendy-wright-ph-d/a-world-of-hearts-the-salesian-spiritual-tradition.html

Jan 25 2015, 8:05 PM

Anne M: I asked the Lord to help me regain inner peace and stop being so chatty (Phone…) and he gave me laryngitis. after leading the rosary before Mass yesterday.

Ruth Cassin: I experienced readings with the Benedictines in Munich. Even when it was a really “easy” adolescent book I had trouble doing TWO things at once.

Ruth Cassin: Sr. Rosemarie; I’ll pray for her, too.

Jan 25 2015, 8:05 PM

A

Ruth Cassin: Yes, I could listen OR eat. Mostly I listened; luckily there were snacks available between meals. Later I bought the book and read it myself.

Jan 25 2015, 8:06 PM

Anne M: I love the Lord. He’s always right there with just what you need.

Jan 25 2015, 8:06 PM

Ruth Cassin: Anne M. I’m glad you are still smiling.

8

Guest7147 (guest): Yes

Jan 25 2015, 8:06 PM

Carol Ann: I think He inspires us to ask for what He wants to give us, so that He can give it to us.

Jan 25 2015, 8:07 PM

Anne M: It’s all good, Ruth. I’m not sick, just can’t talk

Jan 25 2015, 8:07 PM

Dawn L: that is beautiful Carol Anne

8:08 PM

Ruth Cassin: I went to the city for presurgical clearance; getting around was so strenuous — and subways and busses packed — by the time I got home, within hours, I was sick.

Jan 25 2015, 8:08 PM

Sister Susan Marie: Oh no

8:09 PM

Carol Ann: All the perfumes and the dirt in city air? 09 PM

Guest7147 (guest): Oh my

Jan 25 2015, 8:09 PM

Dawn L: “Stay Calm and Wash Your Hands” I read somewhere

Jan 25 2015, 8:10 PM

Sister Susan Marie: Hi S M Roberta! Pray for Sr Rosemarie -in the hospital here.

Jan 25 2015, 8:10 PM

Ruth Cassin: But extra rest, and an course of antibiotic (not usual for a bad cold, but I also broke a tooth!) and I think I’ll be well enough tomorrow to do what I need to do.

0 PM

Anne M: Hi Sr. Mary Roberta

Jan 25 2015, 8:10 PM

Mary Roberta Viano: Hello! Yes, prayers for Sr. Rosemarie! Our Sr. Rosemarie is due back from Kenya next Saturday.

Jan 25 2015, 8:10 PM

Guest7147 (guest): Hi, Sister

1 PM

Mary Roberta Viano: We have two younger women discerning with us for a month (Danielle and Marie), so life is busier.

Jan 25 2015, 8:11 PM

Ruth Cassin: Hello Guest 7147.

Jan 25 2015, 8:11 PM

Guest7147 (guest): Hi

Jan 25 2015, 8:12 PM

Ruth Cassin: How many sisters in your monastery, Sr. Roberta?

Jan 25 2015, 8:12 PM

Ruth Cassin: And in the one in Brooklyn?

Jan 25 2015, 8:12 PM

Mary Roberta Viano: 17 Our median age is 87.

Jan 25 2015, 8:13 PM

Ruth Cassin: 87! Median!?

Jan 25 2015, 8:13 PM

Sister Susan Marie: 15 in Brooklyn- ours is 76

Jan 25 2015, 8:13 PM

Mary Roberta Viano: Yes, we inherited many elderly sisters from houses that closed.

Jan 25 2015, 8:13 PM

Ruth Cassin: I guess living Jesus contributes to longevity.

Jan 25 2015, 8:14 PM

Mary Roberta Viano: So we have a house full of the elderly means a house full of wisdom?

Jan 25 2015, 8:14 PM

Sister Susan Marie: But we have a good number under 70- 6 of us. No one under 48

Jan 25 2015, 8:14 PM

Carol Ann: Yes Sister, it does!

Jan 25 2015, 8:14 PM

Ruth Cassin: Oh, that’s interesting. The Benedictines in Erie did, too.

Guest7147 (guest): The ones in Mobile had one sister that was 33

Sister Susan Marie: Your 2 discerners are young tho Sr Roberta

Jan 25 2015, 8:15 PM

Mary Roberta Viano: Our Toledo and Tyringham houses have younger sisters, not to mention Visitation houses full of young sisters in Mexico and in Africa.

PM

Carol Ann: I’m glad Visitation houses are growing

Jan 25 2015, 8:16 PM

Mary Roberta Viano: Yes, I think our two discerning are relatively young.

Jan 25 2015, 8:17 PM

Guest7147 (guest): It is great the Visitation is growing

Jan 25 2015, 8:17 PM

Ruth Cassin: The “Third World” may soon be evangelizing us.

Jan 25 2015, 8:17 PM

Guest7147 (guest): True

Jan 25 2015, 8:17 PM

Mary Roberta Viano: The Visitation spirit is a spirit of gentleness and humility, which appeals to women of all ages.

7 PM

Carol Ann: It won’t be the first time the third world has evangelized usPM

Mary Roberta Viano: Yes, priests from the 3rd world are in our parishes, so religious will soon be, too, I’m sure.

Jan 25 2015, 8:18 PM

Ruth Cassin: Watertown, NY has four sisters from India.

M

Mary Roberta Viano: Next door to us the Jesuits have their young members with them to teach and study at GU, and they’re from all over the world.

Ruth Cassin: Georgetown University?

Jan 25 2015, 8:19 PM

Mary Roberta Viano: Right

Jan 25 2015, 8:20 PM

Ruth Cassin: Jesuites are all globe trotters, it seems to me.

Ruth Cassin: I lived in a dorm run by them in Munich.

Mary Roberta Viano: That’s what attracted me to the Catholic Church from Presbyterianism, who were all WASPS.

Anne M: Wasps?

Jan 25 2015, 8:21 PM

Mary Roberta Viano: At any given Mass I would meet people from everywhere and all ages.

21 PM

Carol Ann: Hi Amy

Jan 25 2015, 8:22 PM

Anne M: Sr. M Roberta, did you have a good feast day yesterday?

Jan 25 2015, 8:23 PM

Ruth Cassin: Being in Manhattan, I rubbed elbows with people from all over, too. I found myself constantly praying in the buses and subways for the people

Jan 25 2015, 8:23 PM

Mary Roberta Viano: Yes, Anne, thank you! We heard a piece of interesting news: Pope Francis’s grand niece (his brother’s granddaughter) will be attending our school.

Jan 25 2015, 8:23 PM

Sister Susan Marie: Wow!

23 PM

Carol Ann: That’s neat!

Jan 25 2015, 8:23 PM

Anne M: That’s great. Maybe the Pope will come visit when he comes next year

Dawn L: that’s wonderful

Jan 25 2015, 8:24 PM

Mary Roberta Viano: The Pope’s nephew is a successful businessman living in northern VA, so we’re a logical school for him to look at.

Jan 25 2015, 8:24 PM

Amy Cochran: that is wonderful!

Jan 25 2015, 8:24 PM

Guest7147 (guest): Great

Mary Roberta Viano: Yes, the Pope will be in Philly, New York, and Washington in September.

Jan 25 2015, 8:25 PM

Ruth Cassin: Opps. I’m getting my monasteries mixed up.

Jan 25 2015, 8:25 PM

Amy Cochran: she will be in high school?

M

Mary Roberta Viano: Yes, apparently his grand-niece is ready to be a high school freshman.

Jan 25 2015, 8:26 PM

Anne M: That would be awesome if he came to visit the school and monastery.

M

Mary Roberta Viano: I think it’s more likely he’ll stop in to see his nephew in VA – maybe.

Jan 25 2015, 8:27 PM

Ruth Cassin: Reminds me of my I teaching a Prince of Bavaria, when I was in Germany. They — parents came to school, too — were good, humble people, farmers.

Jan 25 2015, 8:27 PM

Mary Roberta Viano: The Pope will celebrate Mass someplace in the city, so maybe we’ll be able to catch a glimpse of him.

8:28 PM

Mary Roberta Viano: Yes, Ruth. I’m sure the girl’s parents are the same – good, humble people, too. 5, 8:28 PM

Ruth Cassin: How far we have come from “mortification” mentioned by StFdS9 PM

Mary Roberta Viano: We still love our ABJECTIONS, as SFdS asked us to do – and that’s a good exercise in mortification. PM

Mary Roberta Viano: And I, for one, have LOTS of ABJECTIONS to love every day! 0 PM

Ruth Cassin: I think I have a hard time with that — whether living on my own or if I were in a monastery.

Jan 25 2015, 8:30 PM

Carol Ann: What is abjection?

, 8:31 PM

Anne M: Sisters, do you use SFdS Spiritual Directory every day, or do you know it by heart already. PM

Anne M: Sisters, do you use SFdS Spiritual Directory every day, or do you know it by heart already.

Jan 25 2015, 8:31 PM

Anne M: I have a PDF of that on my desktop

Jan 25 2015, 8:31 PM

Sister Susan Marie: every action is the goal

2 PM

Ruth Cassin: On my own, at least I don’t burden others with ’em. But maybe sister could help me learn to love my abjections. I’m just starting a book entitled Let Yourself be Loved.

Jan 25 2015, 8:32 PM

Mary Roberta Viano: Being abject is being humble. SFdS says, “If you remain humble, tranquil, gentle, confiding amid your powerlessness; if you do not grow impatient, …then you love your abjection.”

2015, 8:33 PM

Carol Ann: Oh, thank you. do i ever have a lot to work on! M

Mary Roberta Viano: We’re returning to the Spiritual Directory more now. It has traditionally been more focused on among our Oblates of SFdS. PM

Guest7147 (guest): Are they like the Friends?

Jan 25 2015, 8:35 PM

Sister Susan Marie: Ah yes The Daughters of St Francis de Sales can tell you about the Friends

Jan 25 2015, 8:35 PM

Mary Roberta Viano: No, they’re the order founded in Troyes in 1870 by Fr. Louis Brisson, who was urged to do it my a Visitandine, Mother Mary de Sales Chappuis.

Jan 25 2015, 8:35 PM

Ruth Cassin: Around 8th grade, reading The Imitation of Christ while going to public school – and starting to act a little “weird” I suspect — I was trying to understand humility. I think Humility is being face-to-face with the truth about ourselves.

Jan 25 2015, 8:35 PM

Anne M: yes

Jan 25 2015, 8:37 PM

Jan 25 2015, 8:38 PM

Sister Susan Marie: You are welcome

39 PM

Anne M: yes

Jan 25 2015, 8:39 PM

Mary Roberta Viano: How exciting that the Sr. Leonie’s (Visitandine sister of St. Therese) cause has been opened!

Jan 25 2015, 8:39 PM

Mary Roberta Viano: so we’ll hopefully be able to add another Visitandine saint to our list of special intercessors!

PM

Anne M: doesn’t that mean she’s been attributed to one miracle, then?

Jan 25 2015, 8:40 PM

Anne M: or more

Jan 25 2015, 8:40 PM

Mary Roberta Viano: I guess so. Our Toledo sisters posted the link on their FB page.

Jan 25 2015, 8:40 PM

Sister Susan Marie: I think that is what they will be looking for a miracle

Jan 25 2015, 8:41 PM

Ruth Cassin: Sr. Mary Roberta, I wanna check that out.

Jan 25 2015, 8:41 PM

Mary Roberta Viano: I remember visiting her tomb in Caen when we were there in 2009. So many parents prayed for her intercession for their difficult kids – because she was one herself!

Jan 25 2015, 8:42 PM

Anne M: yes

Jan 25 2015, 8:43 PM

Sister Susan Marie: We left to go to Caen, about an hour away, to our Viistation Monastery there and where St Therese’s sister, Leonie, was a Visitandine, Sr Francoise Therese. Four older Sisters, including the Superior, greeted us. We were led to the tomb of Leonie, an underground room, simply furnished with a crucifix, altar and chairs. The tomb in the floor was marked and surrounded by flowers and candles and in the upper right a photo of a gentle looking Leonie, with piles of envelopes placed before the photo. Sr Susan Mar

Welcome to our Living Jesus Chat Room. Just sign in, using any of the methods below.

Jan 25 2015, 8:43 PM

Sister Susan Marie: Sr Susan Marie left all our intentions in our envelope there, as if in Leonie’s holy hands. The Sisters brought out St Therese’s Profession Cross to reverence and soon we had to leave for the 4 hour drive back to Paris. –

Dawn L: very beautiful rememberance

Jan 25 2015, 8:44 PM

Sister Susan Marie: From the 2009 pilgrimage
