Let’s let Saint Paul first ask: “If our wickedness serves to show the justice of God, what shall we say? That God is unjust to inflict wrath on us? (I speak in a human way.) By no means! For then how could God judge the world? (Romans 3:5-6). We often hear about God’s mercy and God’s justice. Are these two mutually exclusive? Are they contradictory? Are they contradictory? Are they compatible? Consider the time when God appealed to the Prophet Isaiah to speak about His earthly mission: “Behold, my servant whom I have chosen, my beloved with whom my soul is well pleased. I will put my Spirit upon him, and he shall proclaim justice to the Gentiles” (Matthew 12:18).Consider the last question with these words from Psalm 85:11: “Love and truth will meet; justice and peace will kiss.”How can something like hell teach us that God is a God of love? What can the Passion of Jesus teach us here? How far out of His way does God go to ensure everyone has a chance to know about eternal consequences?
And from the reflection we repeat: How far are we willing to go in our passion for justice, that is, for what is right and good? What can the Passion of Jesus teach us here?

Judy K: Mercy I can comprehend as a mitigation of consequences of sin or evil. I think that it might that I have a limited sense of the meaning of justice–I then to think of it as in the criminal justice. I looked up justice in the biblical dictionary and it said to look under righteousness. I guess I might need to reorder my conception of justice. Yes, I am all right. I just learned that sometimes people on web sites are not necessarily good decent people. But I have resolved the problem.

It embodies everything contrary to God’s holy nature and is offensive to Him. Thus, sin is a crime against God and justice demands a penalty of death and separation from Him. Jesus satisfied God’s justice if I may put it that way by taking on the punishment due to people’s sins.

Judy K: One thing I have learned from circumstances of my own life, we do not receive the strength or courage to face something until we actually need it. Such as when I had cancer. I had always said that if I were ever told that I had cancer I would tell the doctors to make me comfortable. But when it actually happened, I received the courage to go through and chemo and radiation needed. And I know that I do not have that kind of strength on my own.

She is depressed – so that makes it okay in their eyes. I think people who don’t have strong faith see this as a way of not suffering or watching someone suffer. I think those with more faith put it in God’s hands easier.

KarenP (guest): Redemptive suffering was a new concept to me when I became Catholic. I had not heard a great deal about the redemptive piece until then. People don’t want to suffer in any form, but suicide is not the way out. I think we should pray for those who are depressed and waiting to die and wanting it to hurry. I wish they could see that they still have purpose if they would use their remaining time to pray for others.
