The Visitation Order’s archives hold many profound writings of individual Community Superiors who gave conferences to their Sisters during Lent.
This year we will quote from some of these unnamed Superiors as we journey through Lent 2018.
” Nothing is more salutary than to enter into the spirit of the Church in each season which she has instituted for the worship of God. The principal design in this Holy time of Lent is to cause us to honor Jesus Christ in the desert, his solitude and penance.
We will learn by the example of this Divine Savior, to sanctify this time by recollection, prayer,penance to expiate our infidelities and union with God. These holy exercises should be our only occupation and we should consecrate this time to his love and glory.
Let us make each day our dearest delight.
The second thing we should honor in Jesus Christ, during this holy time of Lent, is his fast of forty days. Our own exterior fast should be accompanied by an interior fast, aiming for faith hope and charity as well as purity of heart, humility, performing welll the duties of our state of life and love of neighbor.”
