Visitandines of Troyes Remember the Life of their Confessor, and Former General of the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales, Father Roger Balducelli, OSFS. Bishop Marc Stenger of Troyes gave the Homily at Father Balducelli’s Funeral:

Chacun est peut-être en train de se demander laquelle des Béatitudes correspond le mieux au Père Balducelli. Je crois en fait qu’on pourrait en citer plusieurs : celle qui parle de la pauvreté de cœur, celle qui parle de l’humilité, de la douceur, de la faim et soif de justice et sans doute d’autres encore. Nous nous souviendrons tous du Père Balducelli, comme de quelqu’un dont le cœur était habité de nombreuses vertus évangéliques.
Mais il est une question plus profonde qui s’adresse du reste à chacun d’entre nous : c’est comment le Père Balducelli, et pareillement comment chacun d’entre nous, correspond aux Béatitudes. Jésus le dit : ceux qui sont habités par ces vertus, ceux-là sont heureux, parce qu’ils sont déjà dans le Royaume, ils correspondent au Royaume de Dieu. Ce que nous révèlent donc les Béatitudes, c’est que le Royaume de Dieu n’est pas quelque chose de lointain auquel on accède moyennant beaucoup d’efforts, au terme d’une route de pénitence, mais qu’il est ici, au milieu de nous et que l’Evangile à vivre en est la porte d’entrée.
Ceci donne une immense densité à tous ceux qui cherchent tout simplement à vivre selon l’Evangile dans le quotidien. Le Père Balducelli incarnait bien cette densité. Cet homme, simple, humble, discret, fidèle jusqu’au bout, ne faisait pas de bruit, mais il avait la densité de ceux qui sont remplis de l’Evangile. Les Sœurs Oblates dont il était l’aumônier depuis si longtemps, en savent quelque chose. Ce qu’il leur transmettait à travers ses homélies, ses leçons, ses conseils, ce n’était pas ses idées, mais le fruit de son propre accueil de la Parole de Dieu, humblement reçue et fidèlement intégrée.
Un autre indice de ces vertus évangéliques qui constituent la richesse intérieure du Père Balducelli, c’est la manière dont il se situait par rapport à ses travaux de recherche. Chez lui il ne s’agissait pas d’un pur exercice cérébral. Il s’est beaucoup consacré, nous le savons, à la cause de la béatification du Père Brisson, mais il s’est fait aussi un ardent promoteur de celle de l’abbesse de la Visitation, la mère Chappuis. Sa recherche était une manière d’être dans la proximité de ces hommes et de ces femmes rayonnants de l’Evangile, et de permettre qu’ils soient connus et reconnus dans ce qu’ils étaient vraiment, témoins de l’essentiel de Dieu.
C’est dans le même esprit des Béatitudes qu’il a accepté la tâche de Supérieur Général de la Congrégation des Oblats de St François de Sales. Puisque la question est comment correspondre aux Béatitudes dans l’engagement qui est le nôtre, j’invite chacun de ceux qui l’ont connu dans cette fonction de Supérieur Général à se dire à eux-mêmes comment en lui ils ont reconnu cet esprit évangélique. Quelques-unes des traces de cet esprit quand on est un responsable religieux, c’est l’esprit de service, le respect pour chacun, l’amour de chacun de ceux qui nous sont confiés, la volonté de valoriser les petits, de rendre à chacun ce que Dieu veut pour lui. Je ne connaissais pas le Père Balducelli à cette époque, mais j’imagine assez bien que c’est de cette manière évangélique qu’il a exercé sa charge.
Etre dans le Royaume, faire les choses du Royaume, c’est à cela que nous sommes tous appelés. Je pense que le Père Balducelli avait un clair désir et une claire conscience de faire les choses du Royaume. Ce que cela provoquait chez lui était l’opposé de l’arrogance, du sentiment de puissance que pourrait ressentir celui qui est investi de ce qu’il considère comme une grande mission. C’est le contraire que préconise le Christ : être le plus petit de tous, le serviteur de tous, tout faire par amour, se donner entièrement, faire œuvre de justice, on n’est pas dans la puissance, mais dans le dépouillement et le décentrement de soi. L’esprit des Béatitudes nous y invite. Le Père Balducelli me fait penser que c’était sa spiritualité.
Je me suis souvent demandé quel était le lien que le Père Balducelli avait avec son appareil photo qu’il sortait en toute circonstance. Je crois pouvoir dire qu’il y avait là une sorte de lien avec le monde réel, un correctif à tout risque d’évasion intellectuelle. Pour le prêtre qu’il était, il était important que soit manifesté son terrain pastoral. Son terrain pastoral, c’était le terrain de sa vie quotidienne et non pas celui de son bureau rempli de livres. En cela nous devons tous être clairs, en particulier nous les ministres ordonnés, sur la manière dont nous sommes appelés à être témoins de la Bonne Nouvelle. Le Père Balducelli a aidé les Oblates à avancer sur le chemin du don de soi. Mais il n’a jamais écrasé quiconque de sa supériorité intellectuelle. Les possibilités de l’intelligence sont elles aussi une richesse qui est destinée à rendre plus riches les autres.
Ce départ du Père Balducelli est aussi une grande peine pour notre diocèse. En raison de notre proximité avec les Oblates et les Oblats, mais aussi parce que tout religieux fait partie du presbyterium rassemblé autour de l’évêque. Nous exprimons donc au Père Aldino Kiesel et à la Mère François Bernadette Beuzelin notre fraternelle communion.

We all remember the Father Balducelli as someone whose heart was inhabited by many evangelical virtues.
But there is a deeper question that remains to address each one of us is how the Father Balducelli , and similarly how each of us is the Beatitudes. Jesus said those inhabited by these virtues, these are happy, because they are already in the Kingdom, they correspond to the Kingdom of God. So tell us what the Beatitudes is that the kingdom of God is not something which can be accessed through distant lot of effort at the end of a road of repentance, but it is here in among us and that the gospel is to live in the door.
This gives an immense density to those who simply want to live the Gospel in everyday life. Father Balducelli well embodied this density. This man, simple, humble, discreet, faithful to the end, made no noise, but he had the density of those who are filled with the Gospel. The Oblate Sisters of which he was chaplain for so long, know something. What they passed through his homilies, his lessons, his advice, it was not his ideas, but the fruit of his own reception of the Word of God, humbly and faithfully received integrated.
Another indication of the evangelical virtues which constitute the inner richness of the Father Balducelli is how it stood in relation to his research. For him it was not a pure cerebral exercise. It is far spent, we know the cause of the beatification of Father Brisson, but it is also a strong proponent of the abbess of the Visitation, Mother Chappuis. His research was a way of being in the proximity of these men and women radiating the Gospel, and allowing them to be known and recognized what they were really the key witnesses of God.
It is in the spirit of the Beatitudes he accepted the task of Superior General of the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales. Since the question is how to match the Beatitudes in the commitment of ours, I invite everyone who knew him in this position of Superior General to tell themselves how they recognized in him the spirit of the Gospel . Some traces of this in mind when you are a religious leader, it is the spirit of service, respect for all, love each of those entrusted to us, the desire to develop small, making everyone what God wants for him. I did not know the Father Balducelli at this time, but I can well imagine that this is how he exercised his evangelical support.
Being in the UK, do the things of the Kingdom, this is what we are all called. I think Father Balducelli had a clear conscience and a clear desire to do things the Kingdom. That it provoked in him the opposite of arrogance, the sense of power that might feel who is invested with what he sees as a great mission. The opposite is advocated by the Christ to be the smallest of all, the servant of all, do it all for love, give yourself entirely to the work of justice, it is not in power, but in counting and the shift from self. The spirit of the Beatitudes invites us. Father Balducelli makes me think that it was his spirituality.
I’ve often wondered what the link was that the Father Balducelli had with his camera he left in all circumstances. I think I can say that there was some sort of connection with the real world, a patch to the risk of intellectual escape. The priest he was, it was important to be expressed pastoral land. His pastoral land was the land of his daily life and not that of his office filled with books. In this we must all be clear, we especially ordained ministers on how we are called to be witnesses of the Good News. Father Balducelli Oblates helped to advance on the path of self-giving. But he never crushed anyone’s intellectual superiority. Possibilities of intelligence are also a wealth that is intended to make the richest others.
The departure of Father Balducelli is also a great sorrow for our diocese. Due to our proximity to the Oblates and Oblate, but also because part of all religious priests gathered around the bishop. We therefore express the Father Aldino Kiesel and François Mother Bernadette Beuzelin our fraternal communion.

… : l’ordre de la Visitation (1610-2010). Les Archives départementales de la Haute-Savoie viennent de faire paraître les actes du colloque international qui s’est tenu à Annecy du 1er au 3 juin 2010, dans le cadre de la Célébration nationale du 4e centenaire de la fondation de la Visitation à Annecy.
L’histoire religieuse et particulièrement l’histoire du clergé régulier féminin, dont les formes évoluent et se diversifient au cours des siècles, demeure un champ de recherche permanent. La célébration de ces 400 ans et de l’essaimage qui s’ensuivit a réuni des spécialistes de provenances larges (Belgique, France, Italie) pour revisiter quatre dimensions de l’ordre de la Visitation et de ses monastères : la chrono-géographie et l’organisation de l’Ordre, ses fonctions sociales – incluant l’enseignement et les rapports à la société civile –, l’architecture et la fonction économique, les spiritualités de la Visitation. L’accent a porté singulièrement, mais pas exclusivement, sur la période contemporaine si peu explorée à ce jour. Ce livre est enrichi par un rapport archivistique très large sur les sources en France.
C’est le parti qu’a retenu le conseil scientifique à l’origine de cet ouvrage, qui réunit les plus importantes contributions présentées en juin 2010 dans le cadre de ce colloque.

News from Nantes , Frances, Visitation Monastery
The community of the Visitation is Nantes is young in median age, small, but growing!: 7 Sisters from 30 to 51 years old. And historic- it was founded in the Order’s earliest days! The Sisters share:
“The small shop where we provide the resale of religious objects and where we offer products of our craft allows pastoral endeavors with people who find us on the occasion of a purchase and confide their worries, and also the poor who seek comfort.
The Church and the world often seek our testimony, the audience is varied groups of children of the parish, schools and Teresian Mission, young college students, catechumens and confirmands. Our chapel hosts many prayer groups: young Family Missionary of Our Lady, the Cooperators of Christ the King Parish, several groups of the Rosary, the Daughters of St. Francis de Sales Scouts accompanied by our Chaplain, the ” Friends of Gabrielle Bossis’ A group bears the beautiful name of “Home Visitation”, it meets every Thursday to worship and praise the Lord and to pray for priests and the priestly and religious vocations. A Member of the prayer group Montfortain, Michael B. gave us an interesting talk on St. Louis Marie Grignon de Montfort, the apostle of our region.
Renewal of devotion to the Sacred Heart
We kept this good news for last!
We can say that this renewal affects all levels: personal, family and world.
On October 16, 2007, we resumed the manufacture of scapulars of the Sacred Heart on the distributed model, two centuries ago, for our Community. Today, nearly 80 000 people on every continent wear this little image of the Sacred Heart. We support the community work of our prayer that the love of Christ inflames their heart and communicates to those around them. This is a quiet apostolate with voluminous correspondence and countless prayer intentions.
Since last year, in our store, we offer Sacred Heart leaflets explaining the spirituality and ceremony of the Enthronement in the home. Applications are renewed forever …
Finally, the Guard of Honour was restored to us in 2001, had a dramatic revival with two retreats a year, a doctrinal training provided monthly to the parlor by our Sister zealot, a great part in the Holy Hour the day before the first Friday of each month.! All these people of all ages are so fervent missionaries unwittingly, first with us, and far beyond our monastery, as the entries keep coming.

Fr. Lou Fiorelli, an Oblate Father of St. Francis de Sales flew in from America on his way with Mike Moran, a Son of St. Francis de Sales, to give a workshop in Rome to the S.M.M.I. sisters. They stayed overnight & 10 of our Daughters of St. Francis de Sales joined us for the day. Father gave us a talk in the afternoon & Fr. Jim & Lorraine joined us for that.
