The story of the Visitation – after which our Order is named – focuses on two unborn children, Jesus and John the Baptist

In the Bible, children were seen as a blessing from God, and infertility was considered a curse. Why has the attitude towards children changed so much in our current time? At Christ’s conception, “the word became flesh” as an embryo. What does this tell us about Christ’s great humility and vulnerability? Mary’s pregnancy came about  unplanned while she was unmarried. Can her faith in God provide hope for Christian mothers who are considering abortion? In what ways can we provide encouragement to them?

Sister Susan Marie: We’re following up on this week’s March for Life with the Gospel of Life- the Visitation passage in Luke

A: I did read it

K (guest): I read them and did have some thoughts, but you will have to refresh my memory.

Sister Susan Marie: Years ago it was an eye opener for me to realize that the Gospel of the Visitation really talks about life in the womb- usually I focused on Blessed Mother’s charity in visiting Elizabeth

A: for me, there are so many aspects to think about

Jan 26 2014, 7:37 PM

K (guest): It was actually the scripture on the visitation that opened my eyes to a person being a person at conception and I was a Protestant then.

Sister Susan Marie: Yes it is multifaceted for sure

A: Marys feelings and Josephs. the fact that she is carrying our Lord

Sister Susan Marie: Wow! Kim-! that is interesting

A what were you taught before that

Sister Susan Marie: Yes Joseph does not show up in that Gospel but he sure had a prominent part

K (guest): The topic never came up.

Sister Susan Marie: Were you praying with Luke when the insight came?

K (guest): When I read scripture, it is almost always a prayer as well. I think it was when I was preparing for a Bible study and meditating on this particular scripture.

Sister Susan Marie: I was in our Chapel here – I was only a novice then and it is as if the passage was written with golden letters- I just seemed to overflow with the sense of that focus of life in the womb43 PM

A: I remember I was in Catholic school and my mom showed a right to life video. thats when i knew!

K (guest): That is beautiful Sister. As a Protestant, I received a phone call (taking a poll) and was asked if I was pro-choice. I just thought of course I am – not having any idea what it really meant. I think many people are in the same boat.

Sister Susan Marie: Being Americans we believe in freedom so that is part of what you just stated I think

A: so you both really had a revelation while reading the bible

Ki(guest): yes

(guest): John in Elizabeth’s womb recognized Jesus in Mary’s womb.

Sister Susan Marie: Yes it really was that way and I always felt after that that I could understand how the Bible is “inspired”

A: It was amazing, of course, very cold. It went so fast, and I didn’t meet us with Sister, I marched with a different group

Sister Susan Marie: The Georgetown Vis contingent did not make it as a group- school was cancelled so they needed to go with their parishes

Am: Actually our bus was cancelled and we had to hop on a different bus

Sister Susan Marie: Weather got in the way again

K (guest): The groups from Memphis arrived in Washington before the worst weather hit. But they say it was very cold, but that made it even more valuable.

Sister Susan Marie: Invaluable witness!
