Msgr. Fabio Fabene in Sanremo celebrated the 350th anniversary of the arrival of the Visitation nuns
It was back in October 26, 1666 when the first four Sisters from Annecy Monastery, cradle of the Holy Order and the great Monastery of Nice, came from Nice by sea on a small boat accompanied by the episcopal delegate, a few days before the foundation. To receive them at the marina there were the religious and civil authorities, and a large crowd. They received the honors of the Provost of St. Siro and the governor, and were conducted to the humble dwelling of the Canonica di San Giuseppe. The foundation began Oct. 26, 1666.
In 1672 they began the new work on the construction of the Monastery in today’s Piazza Colombo. In 1675 they moved and opened the first boarding school in Liguria. In 1892 the nuns were forced to leave the Monastery of Piazza Colombo, and at dawn on August 2, 1892 they moved in today’s Street of the Visitation.
