Starting in the Spring of 2018, Oblate School of Theology’s Master of Arts in Spirituality will offer an asynchronous online course designed to introduce students to the Salesian tradition, one of the most attractive and accessible “schools” of Christian spirituality. Founded in the 17th century by Francis de Sales and Jane de Chantal, the tradition has taken many forms – lay, ordained, monastic and apostolic –all of which share a particular quality of heart. The course will cover the many and varied global expressions the Salesian spirit has taken: among them the Visitation of Holy Mary, the Salesian family of Don Bosco, the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales, the Fransalian Missionaries, and the Daughters of St. Francis de Sales. The course will rely on seminal texts such as the Introduction to the Devout Life and the Letters of Spiritual Direction as resources for vibrant contemporary living and ministry. It will also explore the lives of notable figures in the tradition, characteristic practices, such as the practice of the “little virtues,” devotion to the Sacred Heart, and “preventive pedagogy,” all of which provide a backdrop for understanding central themes in Salesian Spirituality.

The three-credit course will be taught from January 16 to May 4, 2018, by Wendy M. Wright Ph.D., Professor Emerita of Theology Creighton University and Affiliated Faculty for the Institute for the Study of Contemporary Spirituality at Oblate School of Theology.

Prerequisites

1. Credit students: Bachelor degree from an accredited institution

2. Audit students: No required prerequisites but Bachelor degree from an accredited institution preferred. Auditors are expected to attend class sessions (in this case, asynchronous sessions) and keep up with the assigned readings, but are not required to take examinations or fulfill other course requirements. Courses taken for audit cannot be counted for credit at a later time. A transcript record of student’s participation in the course is kept by OST.

3. Enrichment students: No prerequisites and no permanent record is kept of the student’s participation in the course. Students are encouraged to attend class sessions (in this case, asynchronous sessions) and keep up with the assigned readings but will not take examinations or fulfill other course requirements.
