VisitationSiste Gaudete et Exsultate Questions to ponder The title of this new exhortation from the pope comes from Matthew 5:12. Here is the context of that verse:Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you [falsely] because of me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven. Thus they persecuted the prophets who were before you. (Mt 5:11-12). Why do you think our Lord instructs us to rejoice and be glad in the midst of persecution? L

VisitationSiste: Let’s talk about this phrase “the middle class of holiness.” This is not intended to carry a negative connotation. How would you explain what the pope means by this?
Do you ever feel that holiness is “unattainable”? If so, so what makes you feel that way? Otherwise, what helped you embrace the idea that holiness is possible for you?

VisitationSiste: Going to Georgetown Monastery Sunday May be late for chat

Apr 22, 7:18 PM

Judy (Guest): Good evening Mother, and all! Mother have you seen the May issue of Magnificat? The cover is one of the loveliest renderings of the Visitation that I have ever seen.

Apr 22, 7:22 PM

Judy (Guest): 8734, are you Brian?

Apr 22, 7:28 PM

Judy (Guest): Hi Carol Ann! Happy that you are here!

Apr 22, 7:28 PM

Carol Ann: Hi Judy! How are you?

Apr 22, 7:29 PM

Judy (Guest): No complaints!

Apr 22, 7:29 PM

Carol Ann: I think it’s just us so far

Apr 22, 7:29 PM

Judy (Guest): Wonder where everyone is!

Apr 22, 7:30 PM

Judy (Guest): People seem to be coming on later and later every week/

Apr 22, 7:30 PM

Carol Ann: I found this neat book that talks about St. Frances d Sales. Mother left a note her that she might be late. Maybe everyone else is late too. https://www.sophiainstitute.com/products/item/Overcoming-Sinful-Anger?utm_source=SIP%20eBlast&utm_medium=Anger%203&utm_content=SIPeBlastAnger3

Apr 22, 7:30 PM

Judy (Guest): Thanks for the reference, Carol!

Apr 22, 7:31 PM

Carol Ann: I sometimes have a hard time, because while it is evening in the east, it is only 4:30 out here and i can be still out running around

Apr 22, 7:31 PM

Carol Ann: i haven’t purchased it yet, but the review has an interesting quote-how saying “that’s just the way I am” can cost you your salvationn

Apr 22, 7:32 PM

Judy (Guest): Welcome viewer!

Apr 22, 7:35 PM

Carol Ann: Hello, welcome, please join us

Apr 22, 7:36 PM

Judy (Guest): Let’s start with question 1: Rejoicing and being glad in the midst of persecution is truly a gift from God. Not everyone can do it. But doing so has the effect of keeping our eyes on the goodness of God and thus keeping our spiritsuy to see us through the difficult time. Even just smiling can lift our spirits. There is an old saying”Keep smiling; it will make people wonder what you’re up to. And if you keep smiling in difficult moments, people wonder shy and see that that they can’t bring you down.

Apr 22, 7:37 PM

Judy (Guest): That should be “spirits up”

Apr 22, 7:37 PM

Judy (Guest): Wonder why.

Apr 22, 7:37 PM

Carol Ann: i need to work harder on this, as i tend to overthink things and worry. more than one person has told me that the people only do it because they know it hurts me, so if i stop caring, they’ll stop doing it

Apr 22, 7:38 PM

Carol Ann: our peace comes from within and not without?

Apr 22, 7:38 PM

Judy (Guest): Do you mean that people deliberately give you a difficult time just to hurt you?

Apr 22, 7:39 PM

Carol Ann: yes, in some instances

Apr 22, 7:40 PM

Carol Ann: but i’m not their first victim, so its not personal, really

Apr 22, 7:40 PM

Judy (Guest): While it may not be easy to do, try to keep smiling no matter what. That might fend them off if they see that they cannot disturb you.

Apr 22, 7:40 PM

Judy (Guest): Hi Carroll!

Apr 22, 7:41 PM

Carol Ann: Hi Carroll

Apr 22, 7:42 PM

Judy (Guest): Yes Carol Ann, peace does come from within, but we do need to request it from he Lord, for it is a gift.

Apr 22, 7:43 PM

Carroll (Guest): Hi Judy and Carol Ann- Sorry, the computer I was trying to use had a “crash.

Apr 22, 7:44 PM

Carol Ann: yes, i have asked Him to defend me, because i have no one but Him. when it was really bad, and I thought i would be forced to move again, I asked that, and it came to me to pray Father forgive them for they know not what they do So I did, and things came to a head, and the people who are doing the bullying are the one’s on warnig

Apr 22, 7:44 PM

Carol Ann: technology can be so unreliable

Apr 22, 7:45 PM

Judy (Guest): And if we consistently are without peace, we need to ask ourselves why. Are we somehow thwarting the growth of peace within us by acting in a way contrary to God’s will?

Apr 22, 7:46 PM

Carol Ann: i do cause some of my own grief through blindness

Apr 22, 7:47 PM

Judy (Guest): I think that we all go through periods of blindness. At such times we need to be like the blind man in the Scriptures who asked Jesus,Lord, that I may see.

Apr 22, 7:47 PM

Carroll (Guest): A Franciscan priest once told me,wherever there is a smile, Jesus is present. ... Nice idea, at least,... I find myself smiling when I come under temptation, and now when I smile I can only think of our dear Jesus, so THAT is a gift of grace

Apr 22, 7:48 PM

Carol Ann: that is beautiful

Apr 22, 7:48 PM

Judy (Guest): And there is a saying:

Apr 22, 7:49 PM

Judy (Guest): If you see someone without a smile, give him one of yours.

Apr 22, 7:49 PM

Judy (Guest): Smiles can be contageous.

Apr 22, 7:52 PM

Dawn (Guest): Hi Judy Carol Ann and Carroll! I overlooked the time

Apr 22, 7:52 PM

Carol Ann: Hi Dawn! How are you?

Apr 22, 7:52 PM

Carroll (Guest): Glad you’re here Dawn!

Apr 22, 7:53 PM

Judy (Guest): Question 2: The article states that “the middle class of holiness” refers to accessibility. If we consider those wealthy upper class holy people who literally radiate holiness like St. Teresa of Calcutta and St. John Paul IIm we might be discouraged feeling that we can never attain that height. And if we see people in a lesser class, exhibition of holiness, we might not want to go in that direction.

Apr 22, 7:53 PM

Dawn (Guest): minor things a cold and a bakers cyst and everything else is good. how are you doing? Im catching up on chat, is Mother not here tonight?

Apr 22, 7:54 PM

Dawn (Guest): Thank you Carroll

Apr 22, 7:54 PM

Carol Ann: that sounds uncomfortable, Dawn

Apr 22, 7:55 PM

Carol Ann: I do not think that i am like St Mother Teresa, but beyond that, i don’t dare to grade myself

Apr 22, 7:55 PM

Dawn (Guest): it is a bit and inhibits my walking exercise so Im going to see ortho doc on Tuesday.

Apr 22, 7:56 PM

Judy (Guest): However middle class holiness is capable of being attained by all, even by doing the smallest things with patience and love. the article tells us that each one needs to discern his or her own path with the gifts God has given them rather than trying to imitate something not meant for them. There are many ways of bearing witness. Se are not all called to the same way.

Apr 22, 7:57 PM

Judy (Guest): Hi Dawn! Sorry to hear that you are having pain. Hope the doctor can help you.

Apr 22, 7:58 PM

Judy (Guest): These bodies of ours can certainly throw many curves our way.

Apr 22, 7:59 PM

Carol Ann: i’ll say, and they save it for when we are older and not as adaptable...so sneaky

Apr 22, 7:59 PM

Carroll (Guest): ... a good example of how OUr Lord can use evereything to draw us more and more closely to Himself!

Apr 22, 7:59 PM

Dawn (Guest): My hope too. it is not serious rather inhibits activity. will see. I took a flying leap out of back of van and came down on pavement in twisting motion.

Apr 22, 8:00 PM

Judy (Guest): Well Dawn, why a flying leap when you do not have wings?

Apr 22, 8:00 PM

Dawn (Guest): haha : my wings!

Apr 22, 8:01 PM

Judy (Guest): No more flying until you get wings!

Apr 22, 8:02 PM

Dawn (Guest): thank you for the smiles Judy ..

Apr 22, 8:04 PM

Judy (Guest): Question 3: I have never felt that holiness in unattainable. In Scripture, Jesus exhorts us to be perfect as our Heavenly Father is perfect. He would not call us to do the impossible. But we need to remember that without God, we can do nothing. And so we must trust in, and rely on, Him to bring us to the degree and type of holiness that He has planned for us.

Apr 22, 8:05 PM

Carol Ann: i do not think that Jesus means the same thing as perfect as we do when we say we must be perfect

Apr 22, 8:05 PM

Carroll (Guest): How so, Carol Ann?

Apr 22, 8:06 PM

Carol Ann: when we say we must be perfect, we mean that we must never make a mistake, always be what others expect us to be. I have been told often enough that i am not what they expect, therefore the fault is mine

Apr 22, 8:07 PM

Judy (Guest): For some, it might be in deep and intense prayer; for others, varying degrees of suffering; for others, performing many acts of charity or kindness; for others great simplicity of being and of life. In Thess. 4:7 we read; For God did not call us to impurity, but to holiness. In Hebrews 12:10, we read:

Apr 22, 8:07 PM

Carroll (Guest): For me, accepting my own weakness is

Apr 22, 8:07 PM

Carroll (Guest): the key to keeping my heart at peace- with complete confidence in Divine Providence.

Apr 22, 8:08 PM

Guest8048 (Guest): Sr Susan I am late

Apr 22, 8:08 PM

Carol Ann: that sounds so ridiculous when i say that out loud

Apr 22, 8:08 PM

Carol Ann: Hi Sr Susan Marie1

Apr 22, 8:08 PM

Judy (Guest): of discipline meted out by God,[Who] does so for our benefit, it order that we may share His holiness.

Apr 22, 8:08 PM

Carroll (Guest): Hi Sr. Susan Marie!

Apr 22, 8:08 PM

Dawn (Guest): By telling us to “be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect, our Lord is saying we have an opportunity to become fully human by imitating the loving qualities of God. from Catholic Answrs

Apr 22, 8:08 PM

Guest8048 (Guest): Sounds like a good discussion

Apr 22, 8:09 PM

Guest8048 (Guest): Sr Roberta is here in DC with her full habit, from mobile

Apr 22, 8:09 PM

Judy (Guest): Welcome aboard Mother!

Apr 22, 8:09 PM

Guest8048 (Guest): Thanks keep going I will try to catch up

Apr 22, 8:09 PM

Judy (Guest): Is she wearing full habit all the time now?

Apr 22, 8:10 PM

Guest8048 (Guest): Ye,s

Apr 22, 8:10 PM

Guest8048 (Guest): Her mother passed away this week that is why she is here

Apr 22, 8:10 PM

Guest8048 (Guest): Have you finished all the questions

Apr 22, 8:10 PM

Judy (Guest): Please extend our condolences to her and her family.

Apr 22, 8:10 PM

Guest8048 (Guest): I will

Apr 22, 8:11 PM

Carol Ann: Yes, please. we will pray for the whole family

Apr 22, 8:11 PM

Carroll (Guest): Yes!

Apr 22, 8:11 PM

Judy (Guest): I have answered all three. But there has not been discussion of the third one yet.

Apr 22, 8:11 PM

Dawn (Guest): eternal peace be granted Lord

Apr 22, 8:13 PM

Judy (Guest): But there has been some discussion of what Jesus meant when He told us to be perfect as our Heavenly Father is perfect.

Apr 22, 8:13 PM

Guest8048 (Guest): That is often seen as a difficult saying esp as so many claim not to be perfect

Apr 22, 8:14 PM

Carroll (Guest): Ummm... If there’s time, I’d really appreciate some help with “27″:Could the Holy Spirit urge us to carry out a mission and then ask us to abandon it, or not fully engage in it, so as to preserve our inner peace?

Apr 22, 8:14 PM

Carol Ann: and it is often mistaken for worldly perfect

Apr 22, 8:14 PM

Dawn (Guest): it is difficult .

Apr 22, 8:14 PM

Guest8048 (Guest): True Carol Anne

Apr 22, 8:15 PM

Guest8048 (Guest): number 27 is one to really think about

Apr 22, 8:15 PM

Guest8048 (Guest): If we do God

Apr 22, 8:15 PM

Judy (Guest): I do not think that Jesus is asking us to have the fullness of perfection as the Father does. Perhaps we can achieve, or strive, for perfection in one virtue.

Apr 22, 8:15 PM

Guest8048 (Guest): If we do Gods will then if he lead us away from a mission it is his will but if we abandon it for our own reasons that is a different perspective

Apr 22, 8:16 PM

Judy (Guest): That requires discernment-is it God Who is leading us away, or are we choosing it ourselves?

Apr 22, 8:17 PM

Dawn (Guest): I do not understand what number 27 is?

Apr 22, 8:17 PM

Carroll (Guest): Seems like a pretty advanced level of discernment to differentiate ...

Apr 22, 8:18 PM

Guest8048 (Guest): One has to be sure of the mission too that it truly is ones mission

Apr 22, 8:18 PM

Carroll (Guest): Dawn, each paragraph is numbered.

Apr 22, 8:19 PM

Dawn (Guest): in Gaudete et Exsultate you must mean. thank you

Apr 22, 8:20 PM

Carroll (Guest): Yep

Apr 22, 8:21 PM

Guest8048 (Guest): Discernment is often very difficult

Apr 22, 8:22 PM

Judy (Guest): Carroll, I think that we can be pretty sure if we are choosing to leave ourselves, but it might be more difficult to discern if God is doing the leading.

Apr 22, 8:22 PM

Carroll (Guest): Seems like life is full of “mini-missions” on the way to our ultimate mission of being with Jesus... Is that what is referred to in the statement that “life does not have a mission, but is a mission/

Apr 22, 8:23 PM

Carroll (Guest): I mean, ... the mission to make it to Heaven...

Apr 22, 8:23 PM

Carol Ann: we are in boot camp...

Apr 22, 8:24 PM

Guest8048 (Guest): Sounds right!

Apr 22, 8:24 PM

Carroll (Guest): I like that, Carol Ann, ... to help us be more useful in the “battlefield hospital.

Apr 22, 8:25 PM

Carol Ann: yes, and that we are “in training” for the fight for our lives and our pastors are the drill sargeants

Apr 22, 8:25 PM

Judy (Guest): Is getting to Heaven a mission or a goal? I think of mission as something that we are doing as a form of service, but attaining Heaven is a goal. The mission can help us to attain the goal.

Apr 22, 8:28 PM

Judy (Guest): Mother, at the beginning of the chat, I asked you if you have seen the May issue of Magnificat. The cover is one of the loveliest renderings of the Visitation that I have ever seen.

Apr 22, 8:28 PM

Guest8048 (Guest): And heaven is where we become perfect

Apr 22, 8:28 PM

Dawn (Guest): Christ desires communion with us. and he is only good and is love. so the battlefield is from our adversary. is this correct?

Apr 22, 8:28 PM

Guest8048 (Guest): No not yet looked at Magnificat for May thank you for telling me

Apr 22, 8:28 PM

Carol Ann: yes, Dawn, you are correct

Apr 22, 8:30 PM

Judy (Guest): Per chance the battlefield might come from within ourselves, not necessarily from the adversary.

Apr 22, 8:30 PM

Carol Ann: this is also true

Apr 22, 8:30 PM

Dawn (Guest): oh yes, our warring emotions!

Apr 22, 8:31 PM

Judy (Guest): Also our personality traits.

Apr 22, 8:31 PM

Guest8048 (Guest): The spiritual battlefield is multi faceted

Apr 22, 8:31 PM

Judy (Guest): No wonder life can be so tiring at times. We have so many battles to fight.

Apr 22, 8:32 PM

Carol Ann: we live in a fallen world, so some of our flaws can be triggered into sin without any direct action at all. the trap is there and we just bumble into it

Apr 22, 8:32 PM

Carroll (Guest): Never alone, though

Apr 22, 8:32 PM

Guest8048 (Guest): Jesus has won all the battles

Apr 22, 8:33 PM

Guest8048 (Guest): But we don’t always feel or know it

Apr 22, 8:33 PM

Guest8048 (Guest): It is all so mysterious

Apr 22, 8:33 PM

Judy (Guest): And we continue to struggle. Is that we are not surrendering to Him?

Apr 22, 8:34 PM

Carol Ann: it is that each time He wins the battle in us, we are called to ever deepening healing and closeness

Apr 22, 8:34 PM

Guest8048 (Guest): Beautiful insights

Apr 22, 8:35 PM

Guest8048 (Guest): So glad I was able to be he for a bit. Two huge meetings the next two days

Apr 22, 8:35 PM

Guest8048 (Guest): Thank you for being here

Apr 22, 8:35 PM

Carroll (Guest): We only need to remeber that our good God doesn’t even expect us to take a breath without Him

Apr 22, 8:35 PM

Carol Ann: i hope you have a chance to rest too, Sr

Apr 22, 8:35 PM

Dawn (Guest): Glad you could be here also Mother. thank you

Apr 22, 8:36 PM

Judy (Guest): Will be praying for the meetings for you, Mother. May they go well and produce something wonderful for the Lord and your congregation. So glad that you were able to be with us.

Apr 22, 8:37 PM

Judy (Guest): May we all continue to strive for holiness!

Apr 22, 8:37 PM

Carol Ann: Have a good week everyone! May God bless us, every one!

Apr 22, 8:37 PM

Carroll (Guest): Yes- be assured of our prayers- blessings in the week ahead!

Apr 22, 8:38 PM

Dawn (Guest): God bless and God be with us ! thank you all, prayers mentioned and good night . pax
