As you reflect on the scene from John’s gospel, what stands out as significant to you?Why is gentleness so important (especially in comparison to being self-righteous and judgmental)? Additionally, admonish the sinner” is one of the spiritual works of mercy. How then do we counsel someone with gentleness about their sins? What are your thoughts on this idea that the “holiness to which the Lord calls you will grow through small gestures”? Do you have a personal example of when acting with meekness and gentle

May 17, 1:54 PM

VisitationSiste: Do you have a personal example of when acting with meekness and gentleness had a great effect?

May 20, 7:34 PM

Judy (Guest): OK, I’m ready to go! Question 1 What impresses me most is Jesus’ reaction to both the woman and her accusers. He could have been judgemental and even angry. But he was neither. He simply, without pointing fingers, revealed the “sins’ of the accusers and they went away quietly. And He did not accuse or berate the woman either. He asked her if anyone condemned her to which she responded no one Sir. And He told her that He does not condemn her either. He bids her to go and son no more.

May 20, 7:34 PM

VisitationSiste: Thanks for any help

May 20, 7:35 PM

Dawn (Guest): Come, Holy Spirit, come!

May 20, 7:36 PM

Judy (Guest): Oops, go and sin no more.

May 20, 7:36 PM

VisitationSiste: What impresses me too is Jesus calmness and balance in addressing the situation

May 20, 7:36 PM

Guest1293 (Guest): Jesus reminds us all here that we all have sinned and fallen short of the Glory of God !

May 20, 7:37 PM

Dawn (Guest): everyone around him has sinned

May 20, 7:37 PM

Carol Ann: He is also reminding us that it is about Him and ourselves, not Him and that person over there

May 20, 7:38 PM

Dawn (Guest): insightful thought

May 20, 7:39 PM

Guest1293 (Guest): It’s funny too how those who have sinned the most were the hardest at first to the lady , then they were the first to leave when Jesus opened their eyes to there own sin !!!

May 20, 7:39 PM

Dawn (Guest): another reflection I had from this scripture is he will not ever abandon us.

May 20, 7:40 PM

Guest1293 (Guest): Amen Dawn ! And we should never abandon others even our worst enemies !

May 20, 7:40 PM

Dawn (Guest): those who need our prayers most!

May 20, 7:41 PM

Judy (Guest): Jesus is also telling us, as He does the woman, that He does not condemn, but that we are to go and sin no more.

May 20, 7:41 PM

Guest1293 (Guest): They also need our Love !

May 20, 7:41 PM

Carol Ann: Even though we may have to pray from afar, we must still pray

May 20, 7:42 PM

Dawn (Guest): The most profound message is.... his love and mercy.

May 20, 7:42 PM

Guest1293 (Guest): Prayer is a powerful action of Love !!!

May 20, 7:42 PM

VisitationSiste: And while Jesus was direct, He was gentle

May 20, 7:43 PM

Guest1293 (Guest): Amen Sister !

May 20, 7:43 PM

Guest1293 (Guest): Sometimes we don’t have to say a thing we just need to be there !

May 20, 7:43 PM

Carol Ann: He did not expose those people to shame

May 20, 7:44 PM

Carol Ann: What would have been the result if He had?

May 20, 7:45 PM

Guest1293 (Guest): Jesus instantly unified everyone of them by opening there eyes to the fact that they were equal and some even more burdened in sin than the lady they were accusing !

May 20, 7:46 PM

Dawn (Guest): perhaps the same result as people who shame others, thinking they are doing a work of mercy

May 20, 7:46 PM

VisitationSiste: Great points

May 20, 7:46 PM

Dawn (Guest): Yes Brian!

May 20, 7:46 PM

Carol Ann: Destruction of both parties

May 20, 7:47 PM

Guest1293 (Guest): It’s important for us to remember Jesus came to save not to condemn John 3:17

May 20, 7:47 PM

Dawn (Guest): so important!

May 20, 7:48 PM

Judy (Guest): RE Question 2 on the necessity of gentleness. An old saying has it that “A soft word turneth away wrath. In the Gospel passage noted above, Jesus’ gentleness resulted in averting the stoning of the woman to death. His genlteness disarmed the accusers. In counseling oters about their sins, e need to keep in mind that we, too, are sinners. Berating a sinner could result in driving him/her away. Another old saying is that we dan catch more flies with honey that with vinegar.

May 20, 7:48 PM

Guest1293 (Guest): When we Serve Others we are helping God to Save them !

May 20, 7:49 PM

Judy (Guest): And so in counseling sinners our words should be coated with sweetness which will attract other. Harsh words can turn them away making them reluctant to listen to us.

May 20, 7:49 PM

Guest1293 (Guest): When we condemn we are in opposition to God’s Love !

May 20, 7:50 PM

Dawn (Guest): but how do we obtain this knowledge ? fruit of the Holy Spirit....daily conversion receiving his Grace everyday. sometimes, we can stand in the way of what he is trying to work in us! and that is a grace to see this

May 20, 7:51 PM

VisitationSiste: St Francis de Sales has gentleness as one of the key virtues for the Visitation Order but he achieved it with struggles in holding back his natural temperament

May 20, 7:52 PM

Dawn (Guest): I have not reached the point where I can counsel sinners ? I am a sinner, so perhaps I can share my personal experiences or graces but Im unable to stand in self justification which is a lie. Jesus Christ is our justification

May 20, 7:52 PM

Judy (Guest): Who are we to condemn anyone! If we do anything, we should try to build up all people in the Lord.

May 20, 7:53 PM

Dawn (Guest): amen Judy!

May 20, 7:53 PM

Guest1293 (Guest): Sometimes revealing the truth can be harsh but it is also a great act of Love . Jesus was Harsh to the Pharisees because He loved them and He wanted them to Love God and Others and some later helped to build the church !

May 20, 7:54 PM

Carol Ann: Yet it is so easy to condemn. We “condenn the sin” but wind up condemning the person as well

May 20, 7:55 PM

Judy (Guest): We need to hate the sin, but love sinner.

May 20, 7:56 PM

Guest1293 (Guest): By Loving and Serving Others we spread God’s fragrance of Love to everyone

May 20, 7:57 PM

VisitationSiste: Hi Ruth

May 20, 7:57 PM

Guest1293 (Guest): Hi Ruth ! God Bless You ! Brian

May 20, 7:57 PM

Carol Ann: Hi Ruth

May 20, 7:57 PM

Dawn (Guest): Hi Ruth!

May 20, 7:57 PM

Judy (Guest): If we look in the mirror of our own experiences, we will see that we are no better than others, and probably no worse either. Hi Ruth!

May 20, 7:58 PM

Guest1293 (Guest): Amen Judy !!!

May 20, 7:58 PM

Ruth (Guest): Fragrance of Love. Who was it who used that expression in prayer? Was it Mother Teresa, in the daily morning prayer of her sisters? Hi everyone.

May 20, 7:58 PM

Dawn (Guest): beautiful words

May 20, 7:59 PM

Guest1293 (Guest): Someone was there to Love Me toward God , now I must be there to Love Others toward God !

May 20, 7:59 PM

Ruth (Guest): Sorry I signed in late; I’ve been here since before 7:30 but my computer was on super-slow. Guess it is time to sign up for some of that “clean up” software.

May 20, 8:00 PM

Carol Ann: Maybe you just need to delete cookies and browsing history

May 20, 8:00 PM

Dawn (Guest): Im still thinking about St F struggling with his own temperment....and then reaching virtue of gentleness. so a fruit of the Holy Spirit is self control

May 20, 8:00 PM

Ruth (Guest): Thanks for the tip Carol Ann.

May 20, 8:01 PM

VisitationSiste: Yes. Apparently he had anger but tamed it with the help of prayer and God’s grace

May 20, 8:01 PM

Ruth (Guest): Dawn, so much wisdom!

May 20, 8:02 PM

Ruth (Guest): St. F. example gives me hope.

May 20, 8:02 PM

Judy (Guest): I think that Mother Teresa used a prayer composed by Cardinal Newman which begins “Dear Jesus, help me to spread your fragrance everywhere I go.

May 20, 8:02 PM

Ruth (Guest): That’s it Judy. Yes.

May 20, 8:04 PM

Dawn (Guest): Thank God for our One Holy Apostolic Church, and the communion of saints

May 20, 8:05 PM

Ruth (Guest): I thank God too, for the living saints I’ve had the privilege to know personally. God’s mercy shines through them.

May 20, 8:05 PM

Guest1293 (Guest): In Mass this morning the Priest mentioned how throughout history even the pagans were Soo impressed with the impact of the Holy Spirit that they tried to copy what Christians were doing but of course without the Holy Spirit everything always fell apart . They try to copy today also and it always falls apart ! But with the Holy Spirit the impact goes on and on forever !!!

May 20, 8:06 PM

VisitationSiste: Interesting- never heard that about early Christianity

May 20, 8:07 PM

Judy (Guest): The article says that holiness can grow through small gestures. I believe that is true for me since I am not capable of doing great deeds. While I am well educated, I am a simple person and act isbly. I prefer to be quiet and retiring than more aggressive and forceful. I believe that as St. Teresa of Calcutta said wi should do small things with great love.

May 20, 8:07 PM

Ruth (Guest): Yes, Brian (Guest 1293?), the many conversions took place precisely because people observed “See how those Christians love one another!

May 20, 8:07 PM

Judy (Guest): I am a simple person and act simply.

May 20, 8:08 PM

Dawn (Guest): I think of Therese also, in little ways

May 20, 8:09 PM

Guest1293 (Guest): It’s like when a disaster takes place the world will raise a lot of money and it disappears ,. The Church however will build relationships and have an impact for generations to come !

May 20, 8:10 PM

Dawn (Guest): Meant, she spoke of little things. doing little things with great love

May 20, 8:11 PM

Guest1293 (Guest): Judy , you are a great inspiration to me ! Your Faith has inspired me in many difficult situations !!!

May 20, 8:12 PM

Judy (Guest): Tank you Brian. I am happy if I have helped you in any way. Thanks be to God!

May 20, 8:12 PM

Judy (Guest): Thank you Brian!

May 20, 8:12 PM

Guest1293 (Guest): I Thank God for You Judy ! You have Heroic Faith !

May 20, 8:13 PM

Ruth (Guest): That word “simple” has so many ways of being understood. I was just reading something about simplicity by Sr. Joan Chittister (Benedictine) who probably is not a very simple person – and I found some of it kinda confusing. It seemed she was mixing us simplicity with various other virtues, concerns, etc., like poverty, humility, obedience to a religious superior. Of course there is probably a good deal of overlap in practice.

May 20, 8:14 PM

Judy (Guest): Simple is one of those words that you know what it means but you cannot describe it to another.

May 20, 8:16 PM

Guest1293 (Guest): Remember how we simply Loved Oneanother in Kindergarden ! I think that simple childlike Love is what the Holy Spirit Empowers us to Live today !

May 20, 8:17 PM

Dawn (Guest): children , their souls are still so close to God

May 20, 8:17 PM

Carol Ann: Me too!

May 20, 8:17 PM

Ruth (Guest): The desire to grow in simplicity – which certainly is NOT one of my strengths – is one thing that I find attractive about religious life. It is so hard to be simple in this complicated world, and when interiorly there is so much that needs – I’m thinking the German word, aussrheumen” something like “cleaning up, tidying, making space.

May 20, 8:18 PM

VisitationSiste: Another Salesian virtue- simplicity= hard to achieve in our world- but if you can develop stillness within you are on your way to simplicity

May 20, 8:19 PM

Judy (Guest): It occurs to me that simple might mean uncomplicated. Childlike love is uncomplicated. There are no strings attached. They may not be able to explain, but they love you.

May 20, 8:19 PM

Guest1293 (Guest): Walking out of Church on Mother’s Day I see the four Quadruplets lined up sitting on their van step huddled together eating cookies smiling and waving to me with their Mother Smiling Away ! Never Forget That Simple Love !

May 20, 8:21 PM

Dawn (Guest): thats it Judy, their love is uncomplicated. and pure, simple

May 20, 8:21 PM

Ruth (Guest): Dawn, I love that observation about the children. I just volunteered to teach religious education – maybe partly because of what you’ve been saying – to the 1-5 grades IF they’ll have me. I suspect that the kids will teach me a great deal. My training and certification is for the grades 7-12 and adults.

May 20, 8:22 PM

Ruth (Guest): But what they need are teachers for the younger kids.

May 20, 8:22 PM

Dawn (Guest): thats wonderful Ruth!

May 20, 8:23 PM

Judy (Guest): May you be blessed for your generous spirit.

May 20, 8:23 PM

Guest1293 (Guest): They will Love You Ruth !!!

May 20, 8:23 PM

Carol Ann: You are going to have so much fun

May 20, 8:23 PM

VisitationSiste: They are so receptive at that age

May 20, 8:24 PM

Dawn (Guest): what a joyful happy adventure you embark on Ruth]

May 20, 8:25 PM

Ruth (Guest): I was a 4-H leader of a Cloverbud Club, and had the 7-10 year olds when I was a camp counselor, so I do have a LITTLE experience with the younger ones.

May 20, 8:25 PM

Judy (Guest): The little ones can be like little sponges, absorbing everything.

May 20, 8:27 PM

VisitationSiste: next week we go back to the Treatise- in smaller bites

May 20, 8:27 PM

VisitationSiste: Hope that’s ok

May 20, 8:27 PM

Dawn (Guest): Does anyone have a personal example of acting with meekness and gentleness? I found this difficult to answer

May 20, 8:27 PM

Guest1293 (Guest): Saw a picture of the Kairos Ladies in Albion this weekend ! Beautiful Joyful Smiles ! Can’t wait to hear how God has worked on their Hearts ! Thanks for all the prayers ! Please pray for them all always tough week after retreat !!!

May 20, 8:28 PM

Dawn (Guest): I mean assessing if it had great effect. sometimes we may not know that

May 20, 8:28 PM

Ruth (Guest): Yes, as part of our Pentecost celebration there were forms in the pews with various ministries in the church that needed people to sign up, volunteer. The pastor at St. Agnes Chruch wove the notion of “going out” and serving into his sermon.

May 20, 8:28 PM

VisitationSiste: I am trying to think of one myself Dawn

May 20, 8:29 PM

Carol Ann: All we can do is what we are drected to do in the moment

May 20, 8:30 PM

Dawn (Guest): yes

May 20, 8:30 PM

Guest1293 (Guest): I am. Learning Dawn the importance of just Listening to others ! It is a form of meekness and powerful tool God uses to minister to others through us ! I have seen great results !

May 20, 8:31 PM

Judy (Guest): Jesus told us that we must become like little children if we want to enter into eternal life. We need to be simple, uncomplicated, joyful and open. And we certainly need the help of the Holy Spirit to do this. We need His gifts and fruits to make us what we are meant to be in this world, living the life of the Beatitudes-poor in spirit, meek, pure of heart, etc.

May 20, 8:31 PM

Dawn (Guest): we spoke of this few weeks ago ! good reminder

May 20, 8:33 PM

Judy (Guest): Let us call on the Spirit of the Lord to lead us, to guide us in His own ways, in simple ways, to be lovers of the Lord and of all people. Have a blessed week!!

May 20, 8:33 PM

VisitationSiste: Blessed Ordinary time!

May 20, 8:33 PM

Dawn (Guest): you mean, just in our stillness, the Holy Spirit works with others. powerful

May 20, 8:34 PM

Guest1293 (Guest): A lack of meekness Dawn I think comes when instead of listening we are always planning response and looking for opportunity to put our input in this gets in the way of what God is trying to do to help the other person !

May 20, 8:34 PM

Carol Ann: God bless us every one

May 20, 8:34 PM

Ruth (Guest): Dawn, I remember one time, I think I’ve mentioned it before, when I was leading, with one other woman, a group of teenagers at a retreat. It was the gentleness and the kindness of all those kids toward one who seemed to be there just to make trouble and maybe have a cheap vacation. They prayed for him a lot, gently, kindly. They could have become angry with him because he was being deliberately disruptive. A year or so later I

May 20, 8:34 PM

Guest1293 (Guest): God Bless You All !!! Keep Shining !!!! Brian

May 20, 8:36 PM

Dawn (Guest): God bless you and may God be with us. thank you everyone for the nourishment and love.

May 20, 8:36 PM

Ruth (Guest): I was in that part of the country (Germany) again and happened to run into a couple from our group. They asked,Do you remember ___ ? How could I NOT! They told that that young man had become a part of their prayer group and that he was an exemplary member – all in the course of a few months!

May 20, 8:38 PM

Dawn (Guest): good example Ruth of what Brian is sharing

May 20, 8:40 PM

Dawn (Guest): We need community, so important. this chat group is a part of community.

May 20, 8:43 PM

Ruth (Guest): Yes, Dawn. THAT is another “draw” of consecrated religious life. This week I chatted (in person) with the past president of a local chapter of the a Carmelite Third Order. All I said was,Sometime I’d like to talk with you about the 3rd Order Carmelites.

May 20, 8:44 PM

Dawn (Guest): I think we have been given a desire to be together and for some together but in the world

May 20, 8:45 PM

Dawn (Guest): are you thinking of joining 3rd order?

May 20, 8:48 PM

Ruth (Guest): To my surprise, right then and there, she summarized – almost as if she could read my mind or as if we’d known one another well, although practically the only contact we’d had was the two of us with our former pastor praying the Divine Office together a few times after Mass – everything that would be my concern – and basically said,It give you nothing: you already pray the Office; You do mental prayer (I guess she assumed that because sometimes we sat silently after Mass); there is NO COMMUNITY, not

May 20, 8:49 PM

Ruth (Guest): even among those of us who live right near here.

May 20, 8:50 PM

Dawn (Guest): oh my!

May 20, 8:52 PM

Ruth (Guest): This past president is a very quiet, humble, gentle woman, it seems to me. She is a librarian in the part of the library, in the basement, where she sits among the historical documents about local history and practically only researchers occasionally stop by. Maybe I should go visit her there more often.

May 20, 8:53 PM

Dawn (Guest): yes, a research scholar

May 20, 8:53 PM

Ruth (Guest): She married into a local farm family.

May 20, 8:54 PM

Dawn (Guest): this is the one who delivered the message on 3rd order?

May 20, 8:55 PM

Ruth (Guest): I’m not sure she does much scholarly research herself, just keeps the documents available to others. I don’t think she has published or even attempted to publish anything. But if you need a document; she’ll help you find it if it is there – and hand out cotton gloves to wear while examining the old records

May 20, 8:56 PM

Dawn (Guest): nice imagery!

May 20, 8:57 PM

Dawn (Guest): Im going to sign out here. good chat tonight! I will message you...

May 20, 9:04 PM

Ruth (Guest): OK. I just copied what I was writing – cut from here. Will put it in a “private” message.

May 20, 9:04 PM

Ruth (Guest): Have a good week. This one has been really, really trying for me. I am grateful for and welcome your prayers.
