At the beginning of this reflection we are reminded of what Pope Francis said warning against becoming “querulous and disillusioned pessimists, ‘sourpusses’” (EG 85). As we navigate the waters of growing in holiness, how do we a avoid a negative attitude toward the many things happening in the world around us? To deepen the thought behind question one, how can people in heaven be happy and in “eternal bliss” knowing that simultaneously there are people forever suffering the pains of hell. How migh

VisitationSiste: How might this topic of happiness and holiness be considered in light of someone who suffers from mental health issues such as depression and anxiety? Are they not “holy enough”? How does this topic apply to their situation?
How might service be linked to our happiness?

May 6, 6:22 PM

Dawn (Guest): Hi Sr Susan and everyone. I will be missing tonight. In my prayers, dawn

May 6, 7:21 PM

Sister Susan Marie (Moderator): Sorry to miss you Dawn

May 6, 7:26 PM

Sister Susan Marie (Moderator): Hello viewer

 May 6, 7:34 PM

Ruth (Guest): homework” and will have to find my computer glasses! Good topic though! Very interesting. Bishop said to me a couple of weeks ago, when I was hurting in multiple ways and he had prayed for me, quickly, with laying on of hands,Keep smiling.

May 6, 7:35 PM

VisitationSiste: Hi Carroll and viewers

May 6, 7:36 PM

Ruth (Guest): Is Visitation Sister, Sr. Susan Marie, just signed in differently. I thought you were just saying goodbye to Jennifer, since she had to go to prayers.

May 6, 7:36 PM

VisitationSiste: Just hada retreat this weekend in which we were told to”smile thru suffering”

May 6, 7:36 PM

VisitationSiste: Yes I was saying bye to Jennifer anfd then had to switch computers

May 6, 7:37 PM

Ruth (Guest): Hi Carroll, So glad you are here! You always contribute a great deal.

May 6, 7:37 PM

VisitationSiste: I think Pope Francis and our retreat master agreed we need joy. Our priest here said we must pray to the Holy Spirit for the spirit of joy

May 6, 7:38 PM

VisitationSiste: So in addition to being encouraged not to be sourfaced we need to be encouraged to pray

May 6, 7:39 PM

VisitationSiste: To me as bad as the negative things are, our purpose becomes clearer- they are challenges to work against and opportunities to help others face them well

May 6, 7:39 PM

Ruth (Guest): I’m all for joy, but I think it is possible to have a deep down joy and still have a wrinkled brow. If that is combine with a forced smile, it seems fake. And fake doesn’t hack it.

May 6, 7:39 PM

VisitationSiste: Agreed! that’s why the Holy Spirit needs to send that joy

May 6, 7:39 PM

Ruth (Guest): That’s one criticism that many Europeans, esp. those in Germany have of Americans.

May 6, 7:39 PM

VisitationSiste: What is that

May 6, 7:40 PM

VisitationSiste: You mean fake?

May 6, 7:41 PM

Carroll (Guest): Good evening! I may be called away, as Genny is quite ill... I am SO grateful, though, that our Priest came to visit and as he was leaving, their smiles were beaming and he told me that I can begin bringing her Holy Communion... She had been in need of Reconciliation for some time; so, this is a beautiful example of how the illness which seems so negative has brought IMMENSE good –God be praised!

May 6, 7:41 PM

VisitationSiste: That is such a blessing!

May 6, 7:42 PM

Ruth (Guest): I wish that the Holy Spirit would then take some of the pain, too, then. I can have JOY AND PAIN at the same time: it is not a one after another of death and resurrection; it is an in-one-another, and all at the same time.

May 6, 7:42 PM

Carroll (Guest): Thank you for your kind words, Ruth.

May 6, 7:43 PM

Ruth (Guest): Yes, I’ve heard many Europeans complain about the Americans with their “plastered on smiles.

May 6, 7:44 PM

VisitationSiste: Saints also speak of love and pain; similar to joy and pain?

May 6, 7:45 PM

Ruth (Guest): Carroll, it is simply true. Even tonight as you get ready to jump in service, you bring good tidings of reconciliation, conversion” and renewed joy.

May 6, 7:47 PM

VisitationSiste: A beautiful minister and ministry- you are so right Ruth

May 6, 7:48 PM

Ruth (Guest): Joy comes from the love, and from believing that in the larger scheme of things, God – often through the intersession of Mary and/or other Saints – can and will make GOOD come of the suffering.

May 6, 7:49 PM

VisitationSiste: So do you suppose that is how heaven views the suffering on earth then, the joy of intercession?

May 6, 7:50 PM

Ruth (Guest): We may never even see or hear about or in any way directly discern the GOOD that comes of uniting our sufferings to those of the Son of God – as best we can. But if we believe in HIM we KNOW that there is meaning in EVERYTHING he allows.

May 6, 7:50 PM

Carroll (Guest): This question of how this topic of happiness and holiness intersect with those suffering from mental illness is a profound one for me because one of the contributing factors to my having to leave the monastery was overwhelming anxiety...

May 6, 7:51 PM

Ruth (Guest): Not sure, Sister. That was a problem I posed just last Tuesday night at Formation for Ministry, unit on Catholic Spirituality. I put it a bit more concretely though:

May 6, 7:51 PM

VisitationSiste: How can we discuss it in a way that might be helpful for you and your experience

May 6, 7:53 PM

VisitationSiste: I too experienced, before entrance, episodes of panic and depression

May 6, 7:53 PM

Ruth (Guest): Sorry, Carroll. NOT to have anxiety, possibly even intense anxiety, in SOME situations may be less a sign of metal illness than it is a sign of keep observation and intelligence!

May 6, 7:55 PM

Carroll (Guest): especially, an intense fear of not being holy enough to be “worthy” of receiving the holy habit... the memory of what that was like is profound, but I was so immature in my faith at the time... I didn’t yet fully realize my identity as a child of God

May 6, 7:56 PM

VisitationSiste: None of us are worthy that is for sure

May 6, 7:56 PM

Ruth (Guest): Two threads here: The Joy of heaven is PERFECT – and yet, I asked HOW can it be, if, for example, the parent is aware that a child still on earth is leading a sinful life and turning away from God/worship/Church.

May 6, 7:57 PM

Ruth (Guest): Carroll, did you say you’d become a Catholic after going through RCIA?

May 6, 7:57 PM

Ruth (Guest): I mean, not just now, but some weeks back?

May 6, 7:58 PM

Ruth (Guest): BRB

May 6, 8:00 PM

VisitationSiste: The theological perspective here I am not sure I can grasp about the dichotomy of happiness in heaven juxtaposed against suffering in hell but is that not why our Blessed Mother sheds tears for her children and asks our cooperation

May 6, 8:02 PM

VisitationSiste: The Fatima children in their apparitions of Our Lady said she was joyful but I think could also show sadness. so heaven’s happiness must be something we cannot define on earth

May 6, 8:03 PM

VisitationSiste: But on earth holiness is not prohibited by a mental illness look at St Benedict labre

May 6, 8:05 PM

VisitationSiste: and I am sure many others

May 6, 8:05 PM

VisitationSiste: Humility is the key here

May 6, 8:05 PM

VisitationSiste: can’t be holy without humility

May 6, 8:06 PM

VisitationSiste: if a person admits their mental condition, is not in denial, and tries to live with in by placing their life in God;s hands as all are to do, why not be holy?

May 6, 8:06 PM

VisitationSiste: do you agree?

May 6, 8:07 PM

Carroll (Guest): Sorry, I had to step away- I will “catch up” and chime in

May 6, 8:07 PM

VisitationSiste: There is also the possibility of healing!

May 6, 8:09 PM

VisitationSiste: Both you and Ruth were away for a few minutes

May 6, 8:10 PM

Ruth (Guest): I’m back. Hurrah! I didn’t burn the roast and I found my eyeglasses.

May 6, 8:10 PM

VisitationSiste: Hurray!

May 6, 8:11 PM

Ruth (Guest): You are great at “carrying the ball, Sister.

May 6, 8:11 PM

Carroll (Guest): Yea, Ruth!

May 6, 8:11 PM

VisitationSiste: I was chatting with myself apparently but did not know it at first!!

May 6, 8:13 PM

VisitationSiste: If you both need to go that’s ok we can chat next week

May 6, 8:14 PM

VisitationSiste: but there is aviewer here too I think

May 6, 8:15 PM

Carroll (Guest): The “lightbulb” moment for me was when a psychologist shared his observation that Our Lord’s Crucifixion was trauma... seems obvious enough- but, in that moment I realized that in my pain, Jesus was drawing me more and more closely to Himself, which was an answer and fulfillment of my own petitions to Him!

May 6, 8:16 PM

Ruth (Guest): I believe I’ve seen saints in state psychiatric hospitals – even one lying on the floor in her own urine. Lord have mercy! And there is a woman in our town who lives independently, who attends Mass often, even lectors sometimes, but has to walk out of church during the Mass sometimes because her anxiety level is so high. And I have NEVER seen her smile or laugh. We’ve often talked, and I’ve helped her out in various ways, but NOT as psychiatrist. Yet I think that because she is doing the best she can

May 6, 8:16 PM

VisitationSiste: So it was a gift!

May 6, 8:16 PM

Ruth (Guest): she is on the way to sactity.

May 6, 8:17 PM

VisitationSiste: It is in the struggle and our openness to it and courage too

May 6, 8:17 PM

Carroll (Guest): Absolutely...

May 6, 8:17 PM

VisitationSiste: After all we all struggle- to one degree or another

May 6, 8:17 PM

Ruth (Guest): Beautiful, Carroll. And I am so glad you found a psychologist who understood the Faith we profess.

May 6, 8:18 PM

Carroll (Guest): Yes!

May 6, 8:19 PM

VisitationSiste: So illness is not an obstacle to holiness no matter what the illness may be? Or is there some dividing line?

May 6, 8:20 PM

Ruth (Guest): If I may share a not very pious “prayer”?

May 6, 8:20 PM

VisitationSiste: yes

May 6, 8:22 PM

Ruth (Guest): Bishop Bernadine, Sister, said we should pray a LOT while we are well because it is extremely difficult to pray when you are sick. You know he died of pancreatic cancer, and he had been falsely accused of sexually abusing a young man (who later admitted that the accusation was false; but it had taken years . . . )

May 6, 8:23 PM

VisitationSiste: I remember

May 6, 8:24 PM

VisitationSiste: Is that the prayer?

May 6, 8:25 PM

Ruth (Guest): I say “prayer” because it is addressed to Jesus and to his Mother. In his suffering – and I think that the film “The Passion” gets it right when we see “flashbacks” of pleasant moments with his mother as Jesus is a child – sometimes I complain to HIM,but you had a loving mother . . .

May 6, 8:26 PM

Ruth (Guest): That is when I feel like I am being asked to give or to suffer more than I can bear . . .

May 6, 8:26 PM

Ruth (Guest): HE grew up to be a healthy person. So many of us are so messed up!

May 6, 8:27 PM

VisitationSiste: He was God-man so even tho he was all we are- He was perfect, even despite having to grow somewhat

May 6, 8:27 PM

Ruth (Guest): One of His replies, though is,She is YOUR mother, too! And that can bring me to tears of contrition and appreciation.

May 6, 8:28 PM

VisitationSiste: Yes! She is Mama and wants to be, for each of us.

May 6, 8:29 PM

Ruth (Guest): He was like us in all things but sin. But he also had less of the EFFECTS of orignial sin in His early, quiet life as a carpenter.

May 6, 8:29 PM

Carroll (Guest): Genny’s husband has Alzheimers and there are actually moments when I wonder if I see more holiness in him as the illness progresses...

May 6, 8:29 PM

VisitationSiste: interesting

May 6, 8:29 PM

VisitationSiste: No effects of original sin I believe, nor did Mother Mary

May 6, 8:30 PM

VisitationSiste: This is good but it is just about 830 and I have to leave at this time Continue on and prayers for you-til next time!

May 6, 8:31 PM

Carroll (Guest): Thank you for your patience with all of our coming and going tonight!

May 6, 8:31 PM

Ruth (Guest): Carroll, that is part of what sister was talking about several minuets ago, too, the connection between love and suffering. He suffers because he loves her, and the service he gives – the LOVE grows “purer” when she cannot reciprocate. The more loving he becomes, the holier.

May 6, 8:32 PM

Carroll (Guest): That’s beautiful

May 6, 8:33 PM

Carroll (Guest): To answer your question from earlier- yes, I came into the Church after attending RCIA – Pentecost of 2011

May 6, 8:33 PM

Ruth (Guest): I did not mean that Jesus had original sin or NEEDED to be baptized; but living in this world means we ARE effected by sin, original and ACTUAL; were it not for the obedience of his parents, Jesus would

May 6, 8:34 PM

Carroll (Guest): I really wish I could continue the conversation, but duties call.

May 6, 8:34 PM

Ruth (Guest): ve been slain as a little child. They had to flee into Egypt.

May 6, 8:34 PM

Ruth (Guest): Tomorrow

May 6, 8:35 PM

Carroll (Guest): ...a little frustrating tonight,... but like St. Faustina said, : thank you, God, when all my plans are thwarted. ... Gives me another opportunity to surrender!

May 6, 8:36 PM

Ruth (Guest): another day; and I think we’ll continue this topic next week. God bless you Carroll, and those you care for.

May 6, 8:36 PM

Carroll (Guest): Love and Blessings to you, too! Goodnight.

May 6, 8:36 PM

Ruth (Guest): Good quote. I should remember that. Daily my efforts seem so ineffective.

May 6, 8:37 PM

Ruth (Guest): Good night Carroll. Blessings!
