What is the difference between commands and counsels? Why doesn’t God simply make everything a command? What significance is there in having counsels? In our modern age Christianity is often caricatured as some type of fire insurance religion where mere belief in Jesus secures eternal salvation for a person despite their moral disposition. It is almost considered as if Jesus “lets us off the hook. However, if we pay attention to the the four gospels, it is very clear that Jesus put  greater demands on us than the law that came before Him. Think, for instance, when Jesus said that lust is “adultery of the heart. What do you make of this? What are the implications or a follower of Christ?

With the current struggles the Church is going through today, what can this current reflection do to speak into the situation
Sep 16, 7:35 PM

Judy (Guest): Ready for question 1: A command is a direct order to live or to behave in a certain manner, or not to live or behave in a certain manner. A counsel is an advice that can be followed for the greater good of the individual but is not necessary to be followed. It is a suggestion or invitation to a certain way of livine or behaving.

Sep 16, 7:35 PM

Judy (Guest): Hi Kristi!!

Sep 16, 7:35 PM

Dawn (Guest): Hi Kristi, welcome to chat. is this your first time here?

Sep 16, 7:35 PM

Guest2727 (Guest): Hi Kristii !

Sep 16, 7:36 PM

Dawn (Guest): no matter, happy you are here

Sep 16, 7:37 PM

Guest8748 (Guest): No,I was on a while back, once. I didn’t type anything. I have internet issues, so it’s been difficult plus, I forget the time difference. Thanks for the lovely welcome!

Sep 16, 7:37 PM

Judy (Guest): God doesn’t make everything a command because He is a Father, not a General or an Admiral. Military life is based on commands and it must be so to protect the work of the military in protecting a country. All members must live by the same high rules and standards for a successful military organization

Sep 16, 7:38 PM

Ruth (Guest): Hello Everyone! Glad we have a full house tonight.

Sep 16, 7:38 PM

Guest2727 (Guest): Soo Good to have you back with us Kristi ! Great Community here !!!

Sep 16, 7:38 PM

Guest5432 (Guest): Hi Ruth!

Sep 16, 7:39 PM

Dawn (Guest): Hi Ruth!

Sep 16, 7:39 PM

Guest2727 (Guest): Hi Ruth ! Great mini retreat at Prison on Fruits of the Spirit Men were really sharing ! Thanks all for your prayers !!!!

Sep 16, 7:40 PM

Judy (Guest): The significance in having counsels is to protect the reality of man’s free will. n giving counsels, God is respecting that aspect of human life by allowing people to make certain choices by themselves with no sanctions for not choosing a particular counsel. Hi Ruth!

Sep 16, 7:41 PM

Ruth (Guest): So glad the men were growing in the Holy Spirit.

Sep 16, 7:41 PM

Judy (Guest): Just shows that we should write anyone off no matter how bad they may seem.

Sep 16, 7:42 PM

Judy (Guest): Oops, should NOT write anyone off

Sep 16, 7:42 PM

Ruth (Guest): that’s what I was waiting for!

Sep 16, 7:43 PM

Guest2727 (Guest): Counsels give an opportunity for all sides to discuss problems in church and to see how we can resolve these problems . Like in early revelation chapters when Jesus points out problems in different churches that need correction !!! Soo Important !!!

Sep 16, 7:44 PM

Judy (Guest): The Lord has baskets full of miracles which He is eager to bestow on all people.

Sep 16, 7:44 PM

Guest5432 (Guest): Yet we do have ten commandments to live by, though they are to be applied with mercy

Sep 16, 7:44 PM

Ruth (Guest): Yes. And for some the troubles start very, very early. I agreed to be a substitue for PREP (Parish Religious Education Program) and said I’d probably do best with the older kids. Today I had k-1. Fun! But one poor little guy – with two moms & two dads running their households very differently, was having a really, really hard time!

Sep 16, 7:45 PM

VisitationSiste: The evangelical counsels are not commandments

Sep 16, 7:45 PM

Guest2727 (Guest): Every Church does some things right and some things wrong . Communication between churches can help a lot ! We learn from each other !

Sep 16, 7:46 PM

VisitationSiste: A counsel enhances the commandments in a way

Sep 16, 7:46 PM

VisitationSiste: And necessarily our free will is involved in following them

Sep 16, 7:47 PM

Guest2727 (Guest): When churches isolate , they become there own little kingdom

Sep 16, 7:47 PM

Guest2727 (Guest): And they can’t see problems

Sep 16, 7:47 PM

VisitationSiste: We don’t stop at commandments. I a way think of the beatitudes. They are not commandments yet they are essential to the Christian life

Sep 16, 7:47 PM

VisitationSiste: Beatitudes fill out the commandments

Sep 16, 7:48 PM

Ruth (Guest): Hmm. I wonder 2727 what your experience of that has been.

Sep 16, 7:48 PM

Judy (Guest): All are not called to poverty, chastity and obedience. We discover our vocation in life by prayer, study of the various vocations and in spiritual direction with someone who can explore with us our desires, inclinations, feelings, and fears and help us to underatand what is required in marriage and in the voled life.

Sep 16, 7:50 PM

Judy (Guest): A Vowed life. A director can help one to determine which state in life is appropriate and which one to which one is called. And if the vowed life seems appropriate, is i a call to all of the vows, or to one or another of them.

Sep 16, 7:50 PM

Ruth (Guest): Pope Paul VI – post Vatican II – in trying to keep the various factions together said something like: Let’s not oppose the extremes. But some people pushed that toooo far.

Sep 16, 7:51 PM

Guest2727 (Guest): I Have seen in Buffalo Soo many churches that have become own little kingdoms all with problems . When we lost population became opportunity to combine parishes . Those who communicated well in transition have done well . Those who resisted struggled !

Sep 16, 7:52 PM

Ruth (Guest): Combining parishes seems to be happening all over. Not enough priests.

Sep 16, 7:52 PM

Guest2727 (Guest): More communication between suburban churches and city churches has helped create dramatic revitalization of our city !!!

Sep 16, 7:53 PM

Dawn (Guest): in any parish, when Christ is not at the Center, we can expect many problems

Sep 16, 7:53 PM

Guest2727 (Guest): In our area Ruth our city went from 750000 to 250000

Sep 16, 7:53 PM

Ruth (Guest): And so hard for bishops to “assign” the ones we do have: like in the military . . .

Sep 16, 7:54 PM

Guest2727 (Guest): Huge loss of population in city

Sep 16, 7:54 PM

Ruth (Guest): parishoners? 2727

Sep 16, 7:54 PM

Judy (Guest): Backing up to question 2: Christianity is certainly not a state in which mere belief in Jesus secures eternal salvation for a person despite their moral disposition. Recall the words of Jesus “Not everyone who says to me Lord,Lord will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaves]n.

Sep 16, 7:54 PM

Guest2727 (Guest): No just population Ruth

Sep 16, 7:55 PM

VisitationSiste: Good quote Judy

Sep 16, 7:55 PM

Dawn (Guest): thank you Judy

Sep 16, 7:55 PM

VisitationSiste: People do not realize how challenging Christianity is

Sep 16, 7:56 PM

VisitationSiste: Yet we do all in love and depend on Jesus’ strength so the challenge is not overwhelming

Sep 16, 7:56 PM

Judy (Guest): We must do more than just express belief in Jesus. but act according to His will. When Jesus callslust adultery of the heart,He means that that individual is guilty of sinning just by lusting after someone even though so action is taken on the thoughts.

Sep 16, 7:56 PM

Ruth (Guest): Or maybe they do and decide for that reason not even to try.

Sep 16, 7:56 PM

Guest2727 (Guest): If you really know Jesus you begin to know His Will ! You can be religious your whole life and never really know Jesus !

Sep 16, 7:57 PM

Ruth (Guest): Realize how challenging Christianity is.

Sep 16, 7:57 PM

Guest5432 (Guest): No, it’s actually very hard if you try to really follow. So n antsy preach prosperity Gospel and “calling diwnn” blessins as though we could command that, and forget the other side of life

Sep 16, 7:58 PM

Judy (Guest): We can be guilty of sinning in thought, word, or action. And so we must be careful to conform ourselves to Christ in all things.

Sep 16, 7:58 PM

Dawn (Guest): so, walking with someone who is struggling or maybe questioning, just walking with them can be a great help for that person. because Christianity is hard!

Sep 16, 7:58 PM

Ruth (Guest): Judy, AND in inaction! That is where, I fear, I fail most often.

Sep 16, 7:59 PM

Judy (Guest): But we must be sure that as we walk with them, we are giving them the proper kind of example.

Sep 16, 7:59 PM

VisitationSiste: Hard but yet graced and once when depends on the Lord, the difficulty changes- I don’t know how to phrase it- it doesn’t matter what is difficult because the love relationship of one and God is the overwhelming experience all is subsumed into that

Sep 16, 7:59 PM

Dawn (Guest): which would be love

Sep 16, 7:59 PM

Ruth (Guest): Indeed! Dawn.

Sep 16, 8:00 PM

Guest2727 (Guest): When you get to know a friend you begin to have this relationship where you begin to know what they like and don’t like ! You can put their needs ahead of your own . Love

Sep 16, 8:00 PM

Guest2727 (Guest): Agape

Sep 16, 8:00 PM

Guest8748 (Guest): Ruth is so right. I had left the Catholic faith for 10 years. I came back a couple years ago, and feel like I am learning about the faith I never knew. I will admit, it’s been a delight, learning and loving Jesus with each new thing.

Sep 16, 8:00 PM

VisitationSiste: yes self sacrifice becomes a joy- the joy of giving

Sep 16, 8:01 PM

VisitationSiste: Our faith is so much deeper than often it gets credit for-

Sep 16, 8:01 PM

Ruth (Guest): Joy and pain are not mutually exclusive. They can “live” simultaneously in one person.

Sep 16, 8:03 PM

Ruth (Guest): Some people find a way to “steal” the joy of giving, by just taking what does not belong to them, without asking, even when they might have otherwise received it as a gift.

Sep 16, 8:03 PM

VisitationSiste: very true

Sep 16, 8:03 PM

Guest2727 (Guest): Soo True Ruth ! One of Fruit of the Spirit that clashes with prosperity Gospel is Longsuffering ! Soo Powerful !!!

Sep 16, 8:04 PM

Guest5432 (Guest): Longsuffering builds up the virtues of patience and firtutude

Sep 16, 8:04 PM

Ruth (Guest): One priest told me to meditate on “The Lord is my shepherd; I ALREADY have everything I need.

Sep 16, 8:05 PM

Ruth (Guest): I thought that that smacked a bit of that prosperity Gospel you were talking about. It felt manipulative . . . although I don’t think it was meant to be.

Sep 16, 8:06 PM

Judy (Guest): Not all are called to poverty, chastity and obedience. How can we be called to one and not another, as the saint seems to say. The Lord knows us better than we know ourselves and so He knows which counsels will bring the individual to the greatest possible holiness, since that is the goal of Christian life. For example, He may call one to simplicity of life, rather than to strict poverty.

Sep 16, 8:07 PM

Ruth (Guest): Why would Jesus tell us to Ask if all our needs have already been met. And that was when my basement was flooding and the siding had been ripped off my house.

Sep 16, 8:09 PM

Ruth (Guest): Good reflection, Judy.

Sep 16, 8:09 PM

Guest5432 (Guest): Maybe because in the rest if the trials of life God never te d ts us beyond our strength and if we stay united soirityakky, then spiritually we do have all we need even if the physical world is haywire

Sep 16, 8:10 PM

Guest2727 (Guest): Pride can prevent us from asking God for help or asking a friend for help ! Soo foolish but we do it ! Humble yourself ask God for help and keep your eyes and ears open to His response !

Sep 16, 8:10 PM

Ruth (Guest): And those called to all three evangelical counsels, usually interpret poverty, in this country at least, as shared wealth. Few lack for anything really needed.

Sep 16, 8:10 PM

Ruth (Guest): At least not for long.

Sep 16, 8:11 PM

VisitationSiste: I think our country and Church right now need true simplicity and honesty before the Lord

Sep 16, 8:12 PM

Ruth (Guest): Indeed, sister.

Sep 16, 8:12 PM

Dawn (Guest): I agree 5432 ...umm the silly type, but this is what Jesus tells us in John 14:27. he does not give as the world gives but his peace he gives us

Sep 16, 8:12 PM

Guest2727 (Guest): People really notice when we walk peacefully through trials with Jesus ! That’s how they start to look for Jesus !!!

Sep 16, 8:13 PM

Dawn (Guest): I think what you say, this is the real truth Mother

Sep 16, 8:13 PM

Guest5432 (Guest): I am going to fire autocorrect, tests and spiritually

Sep 16, 8:13 PM

Ruth (Guest): I altered the saying to “I have everything I need for eternal salvation” but the priest corrected me to the original statement EVERYTHING . . .

Sep 16, 8:14 PM

Ruth (Guest): Good point, 2727.

Sep 16, 8:15 PM

Guest2727 (Guest): That’s what helped me Ruth watching my friend go through trial after trial walking with Jesus , never giving up Faith in God !!!!

Sep 16, 8:16 PM

Ruth (Guest): Peace, and yet, sometimes anger, aggitation willingness to fight for what is right and what is needed are within His will I am quite sure.

Sep 16, 8:16 PM

Guest2727 (Guest): Childlike Faith !!!

Sep 16, 8:17 PM

Ruth (Guest): Lots of times people have no idea what trials one is going through – unless you tell ‘em; and some would really rather not know.

Sep 16, 8:17 PM

VisitationSiste: With the current struggles the Church is going through today, what can this current reflection do to speak into the situation?

Sep 16, 8:17 PM

Ruth (Guest): Good question, Sister.

Sep 16, 8:18 PM

Guest2727 (Guest): Where else would we go Jesus ! You have the Words of Eternal Life !!!

Sep 16, 8:18 PM

Guest5432 (Guest): We must pray, and fast, I wonder why no one has called for a church wide fast

Sep 16, 8:19 PM

Ruth (Guest): One thing we have learned: Silence, or looking away in the face of evil in high places is NOT a good idea – even if the “whistle blower” suffers greatly because of his action.

Sep 16, 8:19 PM

Guest2727 (Guest): Amen !!!! This kind can only come out by prayer and fasting !!!

Sep 16, 8:19 PM

Ruth (Guest): The Pope has, 5432, and so has our local bishop.

Sep 16, 8:20 PM

Guest8748 (Guest): My Archdiocese had a prayer vigil, yesterday. Many all over MN were at the Cathedral.

Sep 16, 8:20 PM

Dawn (Guest): yet, a time of quiet solitutde and prayer is important before we act in any way, we discern Gods Will. so I want to look up chapter 14 referred to in video about discerning Gods will

Sep 16, 8:20 PM

Guest5432 (Guest): When did Pope Francis! I must have missed it. Nor have I heard about it from our local bishop

Sep 16, 8:21 PM

Ruth (Guest): Their letters were on the back table at church. The response has been a bit minimal though.

Sep 16, 8:21 PM

Guest2727 (Guest): The World is looking to our Church and how we will respond to this age old evil ! We will respond with God’s Love and Mercy !!!

Sep 16, 8:21 PM

Judy (Guest): Each member of the Church today must recognize that every other member has certain virtues, abilities, strengths, weaknesses and desires. Each is touched by God in a unique and different manner and called to serve Him, the Church and the world in different ways. NOt all are called to be married. NOt all to priesthood or the consecrated life. Not all to the life of a missionary. Not all to a life style in the Charismatic Renewal. Not all are called to be teachers, healers or preachers.

Sep 16, 8:22 PM

Judy (Guest): And so we must be respectful of al members of the Church and encourage all to live according to the gifts God has given them.

Sep 16, 8:22 PM

Ruth (Guest): Francis called for ZERO TOLERANCE. I’d have to look up the dates of the letters. They were both very recent, last week or the week before.

Sep 16, 8:23 PM

Guest2727 (Guest): God brings us together and He sends us out everywhere to Serve Him in countless ways !!!

Sep 16, 8:24 PM

VisitationSiste: The more of us who stand for Christ and shine His light- the better!

Sep 16, 8:24 PM

Guest5432 (Guest): Zero tolerance I heard. I just missed the call to fast

Sep 16, 8:25 PM

Guest2727 (Guest): What a Joy to Serve God and to see others Serve God in Soo many Beautiful Ways !!!

Sep 16, 8:26 PM

Judy (Guest): We need to take care that we have removed the plank from our own eye before we attempt to remove the speck from another’s eye.

Sep 16, 8:26 PM

Ruth (Guest): That is in reference to abuse of children and “vulnerable adults” and yet, there are questions whether or not he is not in danger of “killing the messenger” . . .

Sep 16, 8:27 PM

Dawn (Guest): yes Judy! it would be so easy to scapegoat but we do need to work on ourself first.

Sep 16, 8:27 PM

VisitationSiste: Each herat- changed- for the good- will change the world

Sep 16, 8:27 PM

Ruth (Guest): So true, Judy. But there are some matters on which we must not bend.

Sep 16, 8:28 PM

Guest2727 (Guest): We have to avoid looking at circumstances and keep our eyes and Trust in Jesus ! Lesson Saint Peter taught us when he got out of boat ! He was also the only one who got out of the Boat !!!

Sep 16, 8:28 PM

Dawn (Guest): no matter how terrible how horrible this is, I do have faith that Christ will effectively clean His church maybe using all that was meant to distroy for his glory

Sep 16, 8:29 PM

Ruth (Guest): That, Sister, is the essential.

Sep 16, 8:29 PM

Ruth (Guest): Amen, Dawn.

Sep 16, 8:30 PM

Guest5432 (Guest): He has completely cleaned house before. It is likely to be quite painful

Sep 16, 8:30 PM

Dawn (Guest): mother what is herat?

Sep 16, 8:30 PM

VisitationSiste: heart

Sep 16, 8:30 PM

Ruth (Guest): Heart.

Sep 16, 8:30 PM

VisitationSiste: mispelled!

Sep 16, 8:30 PM

Dawn (Guest): thank you!

Sep 16, 8:31 PM

VisitationSiste: Dear friends I will not be here next week I will be in Minnesota at the Monastery in Mendota Heights I will return the following week

Sep 16, 8:31 PM

Ruth (Guest): also a Visitation Monastery?

Sep 16, 8:31 PM

Guest8748 (Guest): Safe travels, and welcome!

Sep 16, 8:31 PM

Guest5432 (Guest): We will miss you

Sep 16, 8:32 PM

VisitationSiste: Yes- but one that is fragile

Sep 16, 8:32 PM

VisitationSiste: Thank you!

Sep 16, 8:32 PM

Guest2727 (Guest): Great Opportunity to end abuse and get people help ! People finally able to share ! Beginning to Heal and Help Prevent others from being hurt ! God always begins in the Church !!!

Sep 16, 8:32 PM

Dawn (Guest): Thank you Mother, many prayers go with you!

Sep 16, 8:32 PM

Ruth (Guest): Prayerful good wishes.

Sep 16, 8:32 PM

VisitationSiste: Blessings to all!

Sep 16, 8:32 PM

VisitationSiste: I will pray for you on my travels too!!

Sep 16, 8:32 PM

Guest8748 (Guest): God Bless you all, and thank you.

Sep 16, 8:32 PM

Guest5432 (Guest): Thank you Sister!

Sep 16, 8:33 PM

Ruth (Guest): The Benedictines from Erie incorporated a “dying out” monastery from Minnesota. It seems to have worked well.

Sep 16, 8:33 PM

Dawn (Guest): God bless everyone, prayers for our strenght and increased faith!

Sep 16, 8:34 PM

Dawn (Guest): Good night friends +++

Sep 16, 8:34 PM

Ruth (Guest): Thank you Dawn. Blessings on you and yours as well.

Sep 16, 8:34 PM

Guest2727 (Guest): Have a wonderful trip Sister Susan ! Many prayers for you ! You are a Bright Light for Jesus and an inspiration to us all !!!! God Bless You All ! Brian

Sep 16, 8:35 PM

Guest5432 (Guest): Good night everyone, have a blessed week !

Sep 16, 8:35 PM

Ruth (Guest): Good night all. God bless you!
