There is much to consider here! Is Saint Francis telling us that a true sign of discipleship is the degree of one’s suffering and tribulation? Believers and non-believers alike go through any degree of suffering and tribulation. What makes the suffering of a believer different? Are we to conclude from this that believers suffer more than non-believers? How could we explain to someone who is unfamiliar with this topic that Christians are not masochists? Job cries out,why shall we not receive also evil? from the hand of the Lord. ... So, how can God send us evil if He is not the source of it?
Do we suffer for the sake of suffering? If not, then what is the point/meaning of suffering?
What do you make of Saint Francis’ statement that “the principal effect of love is to make the lover suffer for the thing beloved”?

Nov 25, 7:31 PM

SrSusan (Guest): Long time!!

Nov 25, 7:31 PM

SrSusan (Guest): Hi Jane!

Nov 25, 7:31 PM

Jennifer Koo: Is very late in London now

Nov 25, 7:32 PM

Jane (Guest): Hi

Nov 25, 7:33 PM

Carol Ann: Yes, we got some rain, but nothing major happened. They are already sending out awareness alerts for this Wednesday’s predicted storm

Nov 25, 7:33 PM

Jane (Guest): Shall we start?

Nov 25, 7:33 PM

Jennifer Koo: I will come to chat room another day. 12:32am, have to go to bed and flying back today

Nov 25, 7:34 PM

SrSusan (Guest): Ok Be safe and count on our prayers

Nov 25, 7:34 PM

SrSusan (Guest): Yes we can start

Nov 25, 7:34 PM

Jennifer Koo: Thank you

Nov 25, 7:34 PM

SrSusan (Guest): ! Is Saint Francis telling us that a true sign of discipleship is the degree of one’s suffering and tribulation?

Nov 25, 7:35 PM

SrSusan (Guest): I wouldnot say the degree of suffering matters as much as the love with which we bear or accept suffering in following Jesus’ example

Nov 25, 7:35 PM

Jane (Guest): Why does God knowingly want us to suffer?

Nov 25, 7:36 PM

SrSusan (Guest): Ibelieve suffering draws out a love that is unique to it

Nov 25, 7:36 PM

Jane (Guest): How

Nov 25, 7:37 PM

Carol Ann: it is as St Paul says, I forget where, that our sufferings make up the sufferings of Christ

Nov 25, 7:37 PM

Jane (Guest): What do you mean by “make up” the sufferings of Christ

Nov 25, 7:38 PM

Ruth (Guest): Hello all! I clicked on Vistation Spirit and got a picture of a rail! Guess it is time to run some clean-up software.

Nov 25, 7:39 PM

Carol Ann: I wish I could remember the exact citation, maybe Sister would know. But St Paul was talking about suffering and how Christ’s suffering is fulfilled in us.

Nov 25, 7:39 PM

Carol Ann: Hi Ruth!

Nov 25, 7:40 PM

SrSusan (Guest): I am looking for the exact quote-

Nov 25, 7:40 PM

Jane (Guest): Thank you

Nov 25, 7:41 PM

SrSusan (Guest): It is Colossians 1: 24

Nov 25, 7:42 PM

Carol Ann: Oh, Thank you!

Nov 25, 7:42 PM

Jane (Guest): Thank you

Nov 25, 7:42 PM

SrSusan (Guest): Verse (Click for Chapter)

New International Version
Now I rejoice in what I am suffering for you, and I fill up in my flesh what is still lacking in regard to Christ’s afflictions, for the sake of his body, which is the church.

Nov 25, 7:42 PM

SrSusan (Guest): There are different translations

Nov 25, 7:42 PM

Jane (Guest): good to know

Nov 25, 7:43 PM

Carol Ann: But that is what I was trying to think of, and I was a little off

Nov 25, 7:43 PM

Ruth (Guest): Also 2 Corinthieans 1:5

Nov 25, 7:44 PM

SrSusan (Guest): Jesus’ physical body suffered but we are also His Body, the Church so we experience some form of what he experienced in time in His personal body

Nov 25, 7:44 PM

SrSusan (Guest): Thanks Ruth!

Nov 25, 7:44 PM

Carol Ann: that is closer to what I was thinking, though it seems i have conflated the two

Nov 25, 7:44 PM

SrSusan (Guest): To Live Jesus is literal!

Nov 25, 7:45 PM

SrSusan (Guest): Believers and non-believers alike go through any degree of suffering and tribulation. What makes the suffering of a believer different?

Nov 25, 7:46 PM

Carol Ann: ours has a purpose

Nov 25, 7:47 PM

SrSusan (Guest): and we do all for God’s glory so even in this suffering His glory will be made manifest

Nov 25, 7:48 PM

Ruth (Guest): I think non-believers suffering has a purpose, too, only they may not know it.

Nov 25, 7:48 PM

Carol Ann: yes! in surrendering our suffering to Him, He uses it for great good

Nov 25, 7:48 PM

SrSusan (Guest): Now its easy to talk about it but when one experiences it it takes a lot of faith to keep mindfulof this

Nov 25, 7:49 PM

SrSusan (Guest): True Ruth

Nov 25, 7:49 PM

Carol Ann: Amen, because I struggle with things that are still dark for me

Nov 25, 7:50 PM

SrSusan (Guest): Jesus Himself asked that the chalice pass Him by but then rescinded by saying to His Father Your Will be done

Nov 25, 7:50 PM

Ruth (Guest): Here some related scriptures: 2 Cor 4:10. Phil 3:10. 2 Tim 3:11. 1 Peter 4 :13.

Nov 25, 7:50 PM

SrSusan (Guest): Thank you!

Nov 25, 7:51 PM

Ruth (Guest): Grant that I may love you always, then do with me what you will.

Nov 25, 7:51 PM

SrSusan (Guest): 13But rejoice inasmuch as you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed.

Nov 25, 7:51 PM

SrSusan (Guest): That’s Peter above

Nov 25, 7:52 PM

Carol Ann: we cannot lose sight of the end goal, reaching heaven, or our sufferings might become too much for us

Nov 25, 7:53 PM

SrSusan (Guest): That is so true- we need to call upon Jesusupon Mary, upon Heaven, in great suffering

Nov 25, 7:53 PM

SrSusan (Guest): That is where the believer has an advantage

Nov 25, 7:54 PM

Ruth (Guest): Yes. I like that. Glad as I am that my incarcerated hernia is repaired, somehow it felt a little like a loss. because every morning I “offered up” the unavoidable pain. I chose to do it mainly for women who were struggling with difficult pregnancies. I’m sure there’ll be something new to “offer up. And it feels like a little resurrection now to be able to roll over in bed without screaming in pain!

Nov 25, 7:54 PM

SrSusan (Guest): Praise God Ruth for the relief!

Nov 25, 7:55 PM

Ruth (Guest): Yes Carol Ann, that is soooooo important.

Nov 25, 7:56 PM

Ruth (Guest): The End Goal: Glorifying God.

Nov 25, 7:57 PM

Ruth (Guest): A little crazy, what “psychiatry” says about thinking of death – as if that were pathological. Not if one believes, hopes, that it’ll be a home-coming like no other.

Nov 25, 7:58 PM

SrSusan (Guest): Saints often spoke of it.

Nov 25, 7:59 PM

SrSusan (Guest): But I do not think believers suffer more than unbelievers- but the quality might be different Suffering without love and hope can be morepainful

Nov 25, 7:59 PM

Ruth (Guest): We need to start here on Earth, though. Learning to rejoice – and thank God – in every situation.

Nov 25, 7:59 PM

Carol Ann: and we do have to think about death, not in a macabre way that leads to illness, but to remember that it is coming, and to be as ready as possible

Nov 25, 8:00 PM

SrSusan (Guest): On Nov 8 I spent the day watching one of our Sisters dying. She was ready but she suffered, yet there was apeace about her

Nov 25, 8:00 PM

SrSusan (Guest): No agitation- that is apeaceful soul despite physical suffering

Nov 25, 8:00 PM

Ruth (Guest): Coverts have been made, in this day and age, by their executioners seeing, hearing the martyrs speaking the name of Jesus.

Nov 25, 8:01 PM

Jane (Guest): In suffering one asks for strength

Nov 25, 8:01 PM

Ruth (Guest): Thank you sister, I wanted to write to or respond to in some way your mention of one of your Sisters passing to the next life.

Nov 25, 8:02 PM

Carol Ann: i will include Sister in my evening prayers

Nov 25, 8:04 PM

Ruth (Guest): I suspect that it is even possible to die “well” in agitation, so long as that agitation, like Jesus’s in the garden is directed toward crying out to the Father, even “crying” wordlessly.

Nov 25, 8:04 PM

SrSusan (Guest): Thank you all

Nov 25, 8:04 PM

SrSusan (Guest): Good point Ruth

Nov 25, 8:04 PM

Carol Ann: fear cannot play any part at all, because it is the opposite of trust in God

Nov 25, 8:05 PM

Ruth (Guest): I wish, Carol Ann.

Nov 25, 8:05 PM

Jane (Guest): I agree with you Carol

Nov 25, 8:05 PM

Carol Ann: well, okay, so i’m being especially bold again, but while fear is natural, it cannot rule

Nov 25, 8:08 PM

SrSusan (Guest): ? How could we explain to someone who is unfamiliar with this topic that Christians are not masochists? Job cries out,why shall we not receive a

Nov 22, 10:57 AM
also evil? from the hand of the Lord. ... So, how can God send us evil if He is not the source of it?

Nov 25, 8:08 PM

Ruth (Guest): There are times when fear is just there; one FEELS NO trust. BUT courage is summoned by CHOOSING trust and right action.

Nov 25, 8:09 PM

Carol Ann: i am not so sure He sends it, but it comes from the fallen world. He sure uses it though!

Nov 25, 8:11 PM

SrSusan (Guest): Probably Ruth from your expertise you could distinguish a Christian sufferer fromamasochist

Nov 25, 8:12 PM

Ruth (Guest): Good observation, Carol Ann. But even when Adam and Eve were cast from the Garden of Eden, God walked with them. He seemed to know that they would need the tribulations to finally accept the salvation he was preparing for them.

Nov 25, 8:13 PM

Carol Ann: does it take tribulation to break pride?

Nov 25, 8:13 PM

SrSusan (Guest): It does help

Nov 25, 8:13 PM

Jane (Guest): How does tribulation break pride

Nov 25, 8:14 PM

SrSusan (Guest): Like today’s homily we become powerless

Nov 25, 8:14 PM

Jane (Guest): ???

Nov 25, 8:14 PM

Jane (Guest): How does powerlessness break pride

Nov 25, 8:15 PM

Carol Ann: we realize that we are not sufficient in ourselves, that we don’t have all the answers, and that we need help

Nov 25, 8:15 PM

Ruth (Guest): Yes, Sister, but there are “Christians” who do appear to me to be masochists. And a HUGE difference between the acceptance of suffering – as the martyrs did/do and Jesus did/does – in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass – OUT OF LOVE. It is LOVE that makes the difference. Take, for example,

Nov 25, 8:16 PM

Jane (Guest): So is pride the belief that one can take care of all on there there own

Nov 25, 8:16 PM

Jane (Guest): ?

Nov 25, 8:16 PM

Carol Ann: yes, and that we have all the answers, not only for ourselves, but for everyone else as well

Nov 25, 8:17 PM

Jane (Guest): So pride is a know it all essentially?

Nov 25, 8:18 PM

Ruth (Guest): the sacrifices of a mother for her child. It is a good thing when done out of love, a “sick” thing when done in order to feel the pain.

Nov 25, 8:18 PM

SrSusan (Guest): and independent from God in vrs ways

Nov 25, 8:18 PM

Jane (Guest): VRS?

Nov 25, 8:19 PM

Ruth (Guest): My typing is so slow that I am always behind the “thread. Sorry. Yes, I think you are onto something important.

Nov 25, 8:20 PM

Ruth (Guest): We need to recognize and use our “own” strengths, but also acknowledge WHO it is who gives them to us.

Nov 25, 8:22 PM

VisitationSiste: My computer locked Sorry

Nov 25, 8:22 PM

Ruth (Guest): But we are meant for COMMUNION – INTERDEPENDENCE. And in our society independence – even FROM GOD and GOD’s LAWS – is seen by many as a strength.

Nov 25, 8:23 PM

Ruth (Guest): It is now. Because it goes against our very nature as creatures. God IS. God is not just one creature among many.

Nov 25, 8:24 PM

Carol Ann: the old idea that we can each live alone, with nothing from anyone, is rooted somewhere in the history of the Old West. But those mountain men, unless they were true recluses, formed interdependent communities

Nov 25, 8:24 PM

Jane (Guest): I only learned of interdependence about 3 years ago and realized- that is it!

Nov 25, 8:26 PM

VisitationSiste: Last one: What do you make of Saint Francis’ statement that “the principal effect of love is to make the lover suffer for the thing beloved”?

Nov 25, 8:28 PM

Carol Ann: it makes me think of the parent who sees their child ill, or injured, and would gladly exchange places so that their child will be whole and well

Nov 25, 8:29 PM

Ruth (Guest): I think I’ve already mentioned that one friend – a therapist, and her husband is a PhD psychologist – after she decided that our friendship was over when – as a final act of friendship she came to my commissioning by the Bishop – after having not set foot in a Catholic church since her first Holy Communion because of the terrifying behavior of a priest – committed suicide. Still her husband’s/widower’s website is full of stuff about SELF-actualization. It is actually DANGEROUS, seriously dangerous,

Nov 25, 8:30 PM

VisitationSiste: reparative suffering as well I think would fit in here- along with the parent example

Nov 25, 8:31 PM

Carol Ann: do you mean the suffering of atonement?

Nov 25, 8:32 PM

Ruth (Guest): to have a wrong view of who we are in the universe and what the nature of being is.

Nov 25, 8:32 PM

Sister Susan Marie (Moderator): Yes atone ment too

Nov 25, 8:32 PM

Jane (Guest): Good night. St. Michael the Archangel- watchover and protect us all. Blessed Mother also.

Nov 25, 8:33 PM

Carol Ann: Good night, Jane, God bless you!

Nov 25, 8:33 PM

Sister Susan Marie (Moderator): I need to be leaving now I will be late next week- tree lighting

Nov 25, 8:33 PM

Sister Susan Marie (Moderator): Good night

Nov 25, 8:33 PM

Carol Ann: oh how fun!

Nov 25, 8:33 PM

Sister Susan Marie (Moderator): Yes!

Nov 25, 8:33 PM

Carol Ann: So Ruth, shall we email later?

Nov 25, 8:33 PM

Jane (Guest): God bless!!!!!

Nov 25, 8:34 PM

Carol Ann: God bless us, every one?

Nov 25, 8:34 PM

Sister Susan Marie (Moderator): 5pm Mass Jane and tree lighting after

Nov 25, 8:34 PM

Carol Ann: that was supposed to be an exclamation point!

Nov 25, 8:34 PM

Sister Susan Marie (Moderator): Blessings all!

Nov 25, 8:34 PM

Ruth (Guest): OK, Carol Ann. But not too late. Tomorrow is an early day.

Nov 25, 8:34 PM

Carol Ann: for me as well. but if we stay “late” we are likely to be disrupted

Nov 25, 8:35 PM

Carol Ann: it is pretty rude to eavesdrop

Nov 25, 8:36 PM

Ruth (Guest): Yes, computers! It is good to use this medium but face-to-face is so much better. God bless each and every one.

Nov 25, 8:37 PM

Ruth (Guest): especially those most in need of his mercy

Nov 25, 10:13 PM

Ruth (Guest): If you suffer with Him, you will reign with Him. If you cry with Him, you will have joy with Him. If you die with Him on the cross of tribulation, you will possess the eternal dwelling place in the splendor of the saints. And your name, written in the book of life, will be glorious among men.
— St. Clare of Assisi
