How do we ensure that God remains first in our lives?
How can we keep our focus on eternity when pursuing our earthly tasks and responsibilities?
Is St. Francis arguing against leisure?
How do we properly discern something that is a duty and something that is not?
St. Francis warns against seeking “courtly favors.” What kind of such favors exist in our modern world?

Jan 26, 7:40 PM

Dawn (Guest): hi Blanca

Jan 26, 7:40 PM

Blanca Villa: Hello Dawn. I guess it’s just you & me for now.

Jan 26, 7:41 PM

Dawn (Guest): a slower start this day. Hi viewer.

Jan 26, 7:42 PM

Blanca Villa: Do you want to start with the questions?

Jan 26, 7:43 PM

Dawn (Guest): if you are ready we could, or we can wait a few more minutes

Jan 26, 7:44 PM

Guest5486 (Guest): Hello Blanch and Dawn.

Jan 26, 7:44 PM

Blanca Villa: I can wait

Jan 26, 7:44 PM

Dawn (Guest): Hi. who be this?

Jan 26, 7:44 PM

Guest5486 (Guest): Oh 5486 is Ruth.

Jan 26, 7:44 PM

Dawn (Guest): Hi Ruth

Jan 26, 7:44 PM

Blanca Villa: Hi Ruth

Jan 26, 7:45 PM

Guest5486 (Guest): I think I left my eyeglasses in the main house. I don’t do well without them. Had a long winter’s nap this afternoon.

Jan 26, 7:47 PM

Dawn (Guest): this is good, a long nap. are you going to get your glasses we can wait to start

Jan 26, 7:50 PM

Guest5486 (Guest): Car got stuck on my driveway — in snow, plow piles — missed 10 AM Mass — so I drove a longer way to go to the only 11 AM in the area. There was a free Christian movie announced. The church had rented the local movie theater. I thought the priest said it was 20 minutes; but he said or meant that it started in 20 minutes. It was 2 hours, but well worth the time. The titile was Overcome.

Jan 26, 7:51 PM

Dawn (Guest): glad you got to attend

Jan 26, 7:52 PM

Dawn (Guest): q1..How do we ensure that God remains first in our lives?

Jan 26, 7:52 PM

Guest5486 (Guest): Yes, I’m gonna go get my glasses. Sister said she expected to arrive around 8:05, so maybe you should get started without her and without me.

Jan 26, 7:52 PM

Dawn (Guest): ok

Jan 26, 7:53 PM

Dawn (Guest): Blanca, it is you and me.

Jan 26, 7:53 PM

Blanca Villa: Ok

Jan 26, 7:54 PM

Guest5486 (Guest): Well, that was a lot quicker than I expected! My computer glasses were right near here, in my medication box!

Jan 26, 7:55 PM

Dawn (Guest): I go to Mass regularly, receive the Sacraments, try to pray a rosary sometime 2 a day. I read Holy Scripture and spiritual writings…well all of these things help me to focus first on God

Jan 26, 7:55 PM

Blanca Villa: The first thing that I thought of when I read this question was to have a prayer routine throughout the day and sticking to it.

Jan 26, 7:56 PM

Guest5486 (Guest): I’m not sure we can insure . . . We need to WANT Him to remain first, and to ask for His help, and to DO all that he asks/invites us to do.

Jan 26, 7:56 PM

Dawn (Guest): yes, so important I think.

Jan 26, 7:56 PM

Guest5486 (Guest): That’s very important Blanca/

Jan 26, 7:57 PM

Dawn (Guest): True, Ruth. everything is Grace and a gift from him

Jan 26, 7:57 PM

Guest5486 (Guest): But maybe only really only possible — the throughout the day part anyway — for those living in a monastery.

Jan 26, 7:58 PM

Blanca Villa: Yes, inviting God in the morning to remain with me throughout the day is essential.

Jan 26, 7:59 PM

Guest5486 (Guest): Yes, morning prayer and evening prayer and frequent brief “aspirations” — brief prayers while we are going about our daily activities.

Jan 26, 8:00 PM

Dawn (Guest): Q2 How can we keep our focus on eternity when pursuing our earthly tasks and responsibilities?

Jan 26, 8:00 PM

Guest5486 (Guest): And I like playing a good podcast or hymns while doing work that does not demand too much attention; SINGING prayerful songs.

Jan 26, 8:01 PM

Dawn (Guest): I like how StF discusses this. Being a slave to those daily dutys

Jan 26, 8:02 PM

Guest5486 (Guest): BTW the film included a pretty good “test” for #1. “Who are you?” How you answer that question is a very good clue as to whether your identity as a Christian/Catholic is primary.

Jan 26, 8:02 PM

Blanca Villa: Yes, sometimes I do feel it’s like that.

Jan 26, 8:03 PM

Dawn (Guest): Keeping attention on God would require, like you both mentioned, regularly bringing your mind to this

Jan 26, 8:03 PM

Dawn (Guest): to Him

Jan 26, 8:03 PM

Er Kane: Hello, I am joining late, but I’m interested in your conversation!

Jan 26, 8:04 PM

Dawn (Guest): Hi Er Kane!

Jan 26, 8:04 PM

Er Kane:

Jan 26, 8:04 PM

Carol Ann: hi everyone!

Jan 26, 8:04 PM

Blanca Villa: Hello

Jan 26, 8:04 PM

Dawn (Guest): Hi Carol Ann

Jan 26, 8:04 PM

Er Kane: Hello. I’m glad to be here.

Jan 26, 8:05 PM

Guest5486 (Guest): Hi Er Kane, Welcome!

Jan 26, 8:05 PM

Er Kane: Thank you all!

Jan 26, 8:06 PM

Er Kane: Is it wrong to say the rosary while doing household chores?

Jan 26, 8:06 PM

Dawn (Guest): Q2…How can we keep our focus on eternity when pursuing our earthly tasks and responsibilities?

Jan 26, 8:07 PM

Dawn (Guest): Not at all! sometimes I leave the rosary playing and just pray with it while Im doing things

Jan 26, 8:07 PM

Carol Ann: It is difficult, but we must try to stay in the present moment

Jan 26, 8:07 PM

Guest5486 (Guest): Wrong? Great, if your are able to do it. Even if it is “only” like music to your ears.

Jan 26, 8:08 PM

Carol Ann: If it is there, nothing else can get in

Jan 26, 8:08 PM

Er Kane: Like when I am loading the dishwasher and praying along with my app. I feel kind of bad because I am not giving full attention to the mysteries, you know?

Jan 26, 8:08 PM

Dawn (Guest): When I do this, listen to a rosary, this is not my primary praying a rosary. but it is good background music

Jan 26, 8:08 PM

Guest5486 (Guest): Even if it is a recording of OTHERS praying the Rosary.

Jan 26, 8:09 PM

Er Kane: OK, I guess I am in good company here, then, haha.

Jan 26, 8:09 PM

Er Kane: Thank you.

Jan 26, 8:10 PM

Er Kane: How can we keep our focus on eternity while pursuing earthly tasks and responsibilities is a good question.

Jan 26, 8:10 PM

Blanca Villa: Offering God my work and daily tasks for His Glory & the salvation of souls helps me get through, especially when I’m tired or frustrated with those around me.

Jan 26, 8:10 PM

Guest5486 (Guest): I heard someone ask: Is it OK to smoke (or eat) while you are praying. Answer: No. Is it OK to pray while you are smoking (or eating). Answer: Of course!

Jan 26, 8:10 PM

Dawn (Guest): Yes, Carol Ann, doing background rosary does keep the area clean

Jan 26, 8:11 PM

Carol Ann: And your ears pure!

Jan 26, 8:11 PM

Dawn (Guest): yes!

Jan 26, 8:12 PM

Dawn (Guest): funny, Ruth

Jan 26, 8:14 PM

Er Kane: Is this life considered part of our eternity?

Jan 26, 8:14 PM

Dawn (Guest): good question

Jan 26, 8:15 PM

Guest5486 (Guest): Good question Er Kane!

Jan 26, 8:15 PM

Carol Ann: As a foretaste of heaven?

Jan 26, 8:15 PM

Er Kane: Thank you, I have been reading too much philosophy. Lol.

Jan 26, 8:15 PM

Er Kane: yes, well, we are eternal souls, so one way or the other this experience we have here may be considered part of our souls experience, I guess.

Jan 26, 8:16 PM

Guest5486 (Guest): And I was about to ask another, inspired by the title of the chat but not directly covered in the questions . . .

Jan 26, 8:18 PM

Guest5486 (Guest): And our souls are not separate from us. I believe they were created at the moment of our conception, or very shortly thereafter.

Jan 26, 8:19 PM

Dawn (Guest): I think it would be presumptuous to see eternal life as beginning now. our soul has not yet left our body to see Christ, and what he may say?

Jan 26, 8:19 PM

Guest5486 (Guest): But they continue in existence even when our bodies do not.

Jan 26, 8:20 PM

Er Kane: Ok, i mean that we don’t have eternal life now, but once created the soul is eternal. That’s different, I agree.

Jan 26, 8:20 PM

Dawn (Guest): Oh yes, I would agree with this

Jan 26, 8:20 PM

Guest5486 (Guest): I’m not sure I understand, Dawn.

Jan 26, 8:20 PM

Dawn (Guest): Each man receives his eternal retribution in his immortal soul at the very moment of his death, in a particular judgment that refers his life to Christ: either entrance into the blessedness of heaven-through a purification594 or immediately,595 — or immediate and everlasting damnation.

Jan 26, 8:21 PM

Dawn (Guest): CC1022

Jan 26, 8:21 PM

Er Kane: Thank you. I misplaced my catechism, but I was going to look it up, too!

Jan 26, 8:24 PM

Guest5486 (Guest): So where does the presumption come in? The particular judgement is at the moment of death; but it is the same soul that informed his living body — an eternal soul.

Jan 26, 8:25 PM

Dawn (Guest): That word is in error, for I can say my soul is going to live eternally

Jan 26, 8:27 PM

Carol Ann: The presumption is that we might think it is through our own prayer rather than through Christ that we have that deep experience?

Jan 26, 8:27 PM

Guest5486 (Guest): Yes, there are those — many, and some I know who SAY so — who believe that at the moment of death, NOTHING of the person who lived on earth continues to live.

Jan 26, 8:28 PM

Guest5486 (Guest): But eternal damnation — God forbid! — is meaningless UNLESS the soul lives on.

Jan 26, 8:29 PM

Dawn (Guest): What I had in mind when I said this word was …I could not presume where I will go. Of course I do believe his promises, and if I am obedient to his commands, I guess that is what we can do. and pray he will take us the rest of the way

Jan 26, 8:31 PM

VisitationSiste: Sorry I miswsed the whole chat again!

Jan 26, 8:31 PM

VisitationSiste: missed

Jan 26, 8:31 PM

Dawn (Guest): Hi Sr Susan!

Jan 26, 8:31 PM

Er Kane: I am sorry – I don’t mean I will necessarily be granted eternal life. Just that human beings have eternal souls destined for some kind of eternity. In my case I pray I at make it purgatory and trust in His Mercy! He is so merciful. To keep our focus on eternity while pursuing our earthly tasks is to keep in mind the gaze of Christ and be aware of our guardian angel.

Jan 26, 8:31 PM

VisitationSiste: Thank you for all of you being here

Jan 26, 8:31 PM

Carol Ann: We know how busy you are. Did you have a great feast day?

Jan 26, 8:31 PM

VisitationSiste: I thought I’d make it by 8 but could not

Jan 26, 8:31 PM

Er Kane: Thank you sister!

Jan 26, 8:32 PM

VisitationSiste: Yes great Feast Thank you!

Jan 26, 8:32 PM

Er Kane: Yes, happy Feast Day!

Jan 26, 8:32 PM

VisitationSiste: and the next big one is May 13 Jubilee Mass

Jan 26, 8:32 PM

VisitationSiste: Sounds like you had a great evening here

Jan 26, 8:33 PM

VisitationSiste: and a new chat member?

Jan 26, 8:33 PM

VisitationSiste: Welcome

Jan 26, 8:33 PM

Er Kane: This is my first time here,

Jan 26, 8:33 PM

Er Kane: Thank you!

Jan 26, 8:33 PM

Guest5486 (Guest): Good Dawn. I think I understand what you are saying: equating “eternity” (in Ed Kane’s question) with Eternal LIFE in the presence of the “Beatific Vision.”

Jan 26, 8:35 PM

Dawn (Guest): Philosophy students ask such thoughtful questions

Jan 26, 8:35 PM

Carol Ann: That’s good for us!

Jan 26, 8:36 PM

Guest5486 (Guest): Hello Sister. Do you still save the chats? 5486 is Ruth. I just signed in a little differently. Er Kane is new, I believe. And contributing some good questions and ideas.

Jan 26, 8:37 PM

Blanca Villa: Hello Sr. Susan! Everyone have a great week!

Jan 26, 8:37 PM

Dawn (Guest): Good night Blanca! thank you, God bless

Jan 26, 8:38 PM

Er Kane: yes, that is what I mean, I don’t mean that by virtue of be ensouled we automatically have eternal life, just that the human soul is eternal and so even now as we exist in space/time we are on a continuum of eternity-culminating in a judgement on our souls and the resultant eternal consequence. Yikes, please have mercy, Lord! Thank you everyone, I am an amateur philosopher. God bless and have a great night and good to meet everyone, Sr. Susan, thank you.

Jan 26, 8:38 PM

Er Kane: God bless!

Jan 26, 8:38 PM

Carol Ann: I’m glad to have met you!

Jan 26, 8:39 PM

Carol Ann: Have a blessed week, everyone!

Jan 26, 8:39 PM

Er Kane: Likewise, Carol Anne.

Jan 26, 8:39 PM

Er Kane: You too!

Jan 26, 8:39 PM

Dawn (Guest): Thank you ErKane! nice meeting you

Jan 26, 8:39 PM

Er Kane: Likewise and blessings of Christ all week to everyone!

Jan 26, 8:40 PM

Guest5486 (Guest): Do come back Er Kane.

Jan 26, 8:40 PM

Dawn (Guest): Good night everyone. Prayers

Jan 26, 8:42 PM

Guest5486 (Guest): Carol Ann, glad you were able to join us. I guess your supervision, or whatever you call it, still overlaps, time-wise, with chat.

Jan 26, 8:48 PM

Guest5486 (Guest): Good night, Dawn, and Er. Sister, I didn’t even get back to “Twenty Nine” this weekend. When I got home from late Mass and the movie “Overcome” (two hours! and then another 3/4 hour drive after buying gasoline) I was overwhelmingly tired, almost too tired even to fix anything to eat. Fortunately, I had already made some good, thick, vegetable soup — and just popped it in the microwave, ate and slept 7 PM!

Jan 26, 8:49 PM

Guest5486 (Guest): til 7 PM.

Jan 26, 8:50 PM

Guest5486 (Guest): Good night Er Kane. Have a blessed week.

Jan 26, 8:55 PM

Guest5486 (Guest): Opps. The title is OVERCOMER, and here is a link to the advertising trailer for the movie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BGyieGVn4P4
