Hi Subscriber, This week we read a letter from St. Francis de Sales to Mademoiselle Lhuillier de Frouville in Annecy on 9 August 1620. She entered religious life on the feast of the Visitation, 2 July 1620. It is from the book Selected Letters of St. Francis de Sales. To prepare for our chat on Sunday, please read the letter, which is reproduced below, and review the questions at the end.   Log in to our chatroom from this link:   Click for chatroom signin     “Visitation” from Altarpiece of the Virgin by Jacques Daret, c. 1435 (Public domain)   I am extraordinarily happy, my very dear daughter, to see what the Holy Ghost has done in your heart, inspiring you with a valiant and generous resolution to give up the world. According to supernatural standards, my very dear daughter, how wisely you have acted! For so it was that Our Lady acted on that feast in the Gospel story of the day you entered [the Visitation], going in haste straight into the hill country of Juda. Promptness in doing the will of God is a sure way of attracting great and powerful graces for carrying out any good work; and you see, my very dear daughter, after the rude shock your heart felt when it gave up its feelings, fancies and inclinations to follow a higher attraction, you are now at last perfectly still and happy, at rest in the blessed and hidden forest you have chosen as a home where you will live and sing for ever the glory of your soul’s savior and creator. Now lift up your thoughts often, very often, dear daughter, to the eternal consolation you will have in heaven for what you have now done. It is indeed nothing (and I see you think the same), absolutely nothing in comparison with what you owe God and with the immortal reward he has prepared for you; for what are all those things we despise and give up for God? After all, they are only poor little moments of freedom of a kind which is a thousand times more restricted than slavery itself; perpetual anxieties, vain pretensions which change all the time, can never be satisfied and which would have harassed our spirit and engrossed us with a thousand useless cares: and all for a miserably short space of days, few and evil. And yet it has pleased God that whoever leaves these vain and empty pursuits of a moment gains in exchange the glory of eternal bliss where the very thought that we wanted to love God with all our heart and have increased our eternal love by a single little degree will overwhelm us with happiness. Indeed, my very dear daughter, I should have been careful not to say to you: ride roughshod over your feelings, your diffidence, your fears, your aversions, had I not had confidence in the goodness of your divine Bridegroom who would give you strength and courage to take the part of inspiration and reason against the part of nature and disinclination. But I must go on to tell you this, my very dear daughter: now that you are sweetly dead to the world and the world dead in you, that is only a part of the holocaust. Two things remain: the victim must be consumed, you must strip your heart of self, cut back hard all the little shortcomings prompted by nature and by the world; and the other is to burn and reduce your selflove to ashes and transform your dear soul into flames of heavenly love. Now this, my really very dear daughter, is not done in a day, and he who gave you the grace to strike the fust blow will himself see to the other two matters in union with you; and because his hand is most fatherly, he will either do it without your knowledge, or if he makes you feel it, he will give you the constancy, indeed the joy of St. Lawrence the martyr, the vigil of whose feast we celebrate today. That is why you must not be afraid, for he who gave you the desire will bring it to a good issue. Be faithful in small matters and few, and he will establish you over great things. Promise me, my very dear daughter, that if you are given permission you will write from your happy retreat and tell me all that happens; and I promise you that you will be allowed to do it and that I shall receive your account with extremely great love. May God be for ever blessed, praised and glorified, my very dear daughter, and I am in him and for him, in a most special way, Your very humble and very affectionate servant, Francis, Bishop of Geneva. P.S. Your dear Cistercian uncle will be very happy to know that you have entered religion.   Reflections: What is the difference the way religious give up the world and the way lay people are supposed to be detached from the world? What’s the difference between promptness and acting impatiently and/or in a rushed manner? es right, the Holy Spirit’s prompting- great!   Jun 6, 7:53 PM VisitationSiste: q 3 3. Jun 6, 7:53 PM VisitationSiste: Hi Carroll ? Do religious receive a greater reward in heaven than lay people? :32 PM

VisitationSiste: first q 1. What is the difference the way religious give up the world and the way lay people are supposed to be detached from the world?

Jun 6, 7:32 PM

Simone (Guest): well Sister.. we are hanging on your lips for that answer

Jun 6, 7:33 PM

VisitationSiste: Hi Elena!

Jun 6, 7:33 PM

Simone (Guest): Hi Elena. I missed you last week!

Jun 6, 7:33 PM

Elena (Guest): Hi there! Yes, last weekend I was buried in creating my final exams. I missed being here!

Jun 6, 7:34 PM

Simone (Guest): well. I am wondering if the answer is actually embedded in the question. Religious – give up the world.. laypeople detach from it

Jun 6, 7:34 PM

VisitationSiste: I think that there is a difference in what our environment is but actually we all need to be detached; so I detach from travel for ex; maybe a lay faithful detaches from something else

Jun 6, 7:34 PM

Elena (Guest): Simone, you’re onto something. Very good!

PM

Dawn (Guest): Religious physically remove themselves from the world, prob the main. difference.

Jun 6, 7:35 PM

Dawn (Guest): Your answer Sr is most helpful

Jun 6, 7:35 PM

Elena (Guest): Also… we should keep in mind religious have various forms of life, right? Cloistered nuns truly give up the world in many ways, more so than active religious who are more present to the world (but not of it).

Jun 6, 7:35 PM

VisitationSiste: all true!

Jun 6, 7:35 PM

Simone (Guest): both have its challenges I guess

Jun 6, 7:36 PM

VisitationSiste: Once one is used to the detachment one needs to go towards attachment to the lOrd in deeper ways

Jun 6, 7:36 PM

Dawn (Guest): I believe the interior process can be equally a trial for either.

Jun 6, 7:36 PM

VisitationSiste: Lord

6, 7:37 PM

Elena (Guest): Sister, please explain that statement more fully. “detachment” isn’t enough is it?

Jun 6, 7:38 PM

Simone (Guest): I love that Sister.. Yes.. so true.. Never thought about it like a “two step: process really – Detachment first – but then – the movement closer to GOd (re-attachment)

Jun 6, 7:38 PM

VisitationSiste: And religious can get attached falsely to little things, even a holy card

Jun 6, 7:38 PM

Dawn (Guest): I watched a novice enter Carmel and saying her goobyes to family she was sobbing. I felt sad with her.

Jun 6, 7:38 PM

Elena (Guest): Thinking that eastern religions have an emphasis on detachment, but there is no “attachment” there.

38 PM

Dawn (Guest): interesting, the little attachments

Jun 6, 7:39 PM

Simone (Guest): I think the fallen human nature is always prone to attach itself in one way or another to something in the world

Jun 6, 7:39 PM

VisitationSiste: The detachment is so we can focus on the truly Real, which are the spiritual realities and of course God

7:39 PM

Simone (Guest): I agree.. and spiritual life is actually really easier – when we reduce attachments

Jun 6, 7:39 PM

Elena (Guest): That’s so important, Sister, to communicate, lest the detachment get twisted into a sort of nihilism.

Jun 6, 7:39 PM

VisitationSiste: St Francis de Sales had the Srs changing everythng every year, their rooms, their crosses, even their holy cards!

Jun 6, 7:40 PM

Elena (Guest): Oh wow, that’s so cool!

Jun 6, 7:40 PM

Simone (Guest): oooooh.. that’s interesting

0 PM

Simone (Guest): and right Elena.. good point.. we could end up with a “Buddhist detachment” if we are not directing it back to God

Jun 6, 7:40 PM

VisitationSiste: sharing all things in common and not getting attached. Nothing was ever “mine” we always said “ours”

Jun 6, 7:41 PM

Elena (Guest): Attachments to people… also difficult sometimes when God is asking us to let go.

Jun 6, 7:41 PM

VisitationSiste: This is in a fully faithful Monastery

Jun 6, 7:41 PM

VisitationSiste: Things have changed over time

Jun 6, 7:41 PM

VisitationSiste: in some

Jun 6, 7:41 PM

Simone (Guest): I will tell my husband now, that I will need to re-decorate our house every year.. sorry hon – my spirituality needs it

Jun 6, 7:41 PM

Elena (Guest): hahahahahaha

Jun 6, 7:41 PM

Dawn (Guest): lol

6, 7:41 PM

VisitationSiste: great sense of humor!

Jun 6, 7:41 PM

Dawn (Guest): disordered attachments 43 PM

Simone (Guest): I guess.. you get really focused on little things then.. Like a toothbrush.

Jun 6, 7:43 PM

Simone (Guest): I did not know that this sacrificed is asked from you.

42 PM

Elena (Guest): that’s the phrase, Dawn. thank you!

Jun 6, 7:42 PM

Dawn (Guest): Hi Elena!

Jun 6, 7:42 PM

Simone (Guest): was it difficult for you Sister not to “own” anything?

Jun 6, 7:42 PM

Elena (Guest): Hi-ya, Dawn!

Jun 6, 7:42 PM

VisitationSiste: Yes it is difficult

Jun 6, 7:43 PM

Simone (Guest): I guess.. you get really focused on little things then.. Like a toothbrush.

Jun 6, 7:43 PM

Simone (Guest): I did not know that this sacrificed is asked from you.

Jun 6, 7:44 PM

Dawn (Guest): what about your Rosary, would that be a personal thing Sr?

Jun 6, 7:44 PM

VisitationSiste: No

Jun 6, 7:44 PM

Simone (Guest): I think, that some people have a different approach to taking care of things. And if someone is handling something very poorly – or careless – it must hurt not to be able to say anything.

Jun 6, 7:44 PM

VisitationSiste: But again it our Monastery we dont follow this custom closely

Jun 6, 7:45 PM

VisitationSiste: But I would ned to be ready to give it up if needed

Jun 6, 7:45 PM

VisitationSiste: q 2 What’s the difference between promptness and acting impatiently and/or in a rushed manner?

PM

VisitationSiste: q 2 What’s the difference between promptness and acting impatiently and/or in a rushed manner?

Jun 6, 7:45 PM

Elena (Guest): Promptness is tied to obedience, I think. Rushing or acting impatiently means no discernment or charity is present.

Jun 6, 7:46 PM

Simone (Guest): love that

Jun 6, 7:46 PM

Dawn (Guest): Q2 promptness is controlled maybe a virtue, Impatient rushed is certainly from the devil

Jun 6, 7:46 PM

Simone (Guest): promptness is responding to something -rushing or impatience is reacting more

Jun 6, 7:47 PM

Elena (Guest): I like that, Simone, yes.

7 PM

Elena (Guest): I like that, Simone, yes.

Jun 6, 7:47 PM

Simone (Guest): Dawn.. interestingly= the word “controlled” also came up fo rme

Jun 6, 7:47 PM

Simone (Guest): also harnessed.. but I was not sure if that is an English word

Jun 6, 7:47 PM

VisitationSiste: Our Lady at the Visitation went promptly to her cousin but I cannot imagine her rushing

8 PM

Elena (Guest): Promptness connected to virtue — I think of the monastic practice of setting aside whevever one is doing when the bell rings for Divine Office.

Jun 6, 7:48 PM

Elena (Guest): Oh I like that, Sister!

48 PM

Simone (Guest): yes. interesting.. my translations says ‘ with haste”

Jun 6, 7:48 PM

Dawn (Guest): oh yes. all of these good answers

Jun 6, 7:48 PM

Bettychao (Guest): Hi sr Susan hi how are you?

Jun 6, 7:48 PM

Bettychao (Guest): This is bettychao

Jun 6, 7:48 PM

Dawn (Guest): Visitation good example

Jun 6, 7:49 PM

Simone (Guest): But did Mary “obey” by going to Elizabeth – or did she act – moved by charity?

7:50 PM

Elena (Guest): Depends on the sitch, whether promptness is obedience or acting in charity.

Jun 6, 7:50 PM

Simone (Guest): I managed to confuse myself

PM

Elena (Guest): Charity, I would think.

Jun 6, 7:50 PM

VisitationSiste: Charity I think

Jun 6, 7:50 PM

Simone (Guest): or is the prompt response to the movement of Charity – the obidience

Jun 6, 7:50 PM

VisitationSiste: Hi Betty How are you?

Jun 6, 7:50 PM

Elena (Guest): Depends on the sitch, whether promptness is obedience or acting in charity.

Jun 6, 7:50 PM

Simone (Guest): I managed to confuse myself

Jun 6, 7:51 PM

Elena (Guest): Obedience to the Holy Spirit’s prompting… promptness to answer the prompting? oh boy

6, 7:51 PM

Bettychao (Guest): Sr susan

Jun 6, 7:51 PM

VisitationSiste: Yes right, the Holy Spirit’s prompting- great!

Jun 6, 7:53 PM

VisitationSiste: q 3 3. St. Francis mentions “the eternal consolation you will have in heaven for what you have now done.” What is this

Jun 6, 7:53 PM

Dawn (Guest): I believe we can learn to, well receive grace to, respond to movements of the Holy Spirit.

Jun 6, 7:53 PM

VisitationSiste: Hi Carroll!

Jun 6, 7:54 PM

Carroll V (Guest): Hi everyone- Happy Feast Day! Sorry I’m late.

PM

Dawn (Guest): this question, it almost soundly as we would merit by our actions?

Jun 6, 7:54 PM

Simone (Guest): Do you mean by ways of intentional striving to respond to the Holy Spirit promptly Dawn?

, 7:56 PM

Simone (Guest): As for Q3 – I think St. Francis means, that the decision of the lady – who decided to “die to the world”- will have great spiritual merits – beyond life here :56 PM

Dawn (Guest): There are times when in his presense things just flow according to him, like surrendering to this. I do not have this all the time, but often enough to want it all the time

Jun 6, 7:56 PM

Elena (Guest): eye has not seen… what has been prepared for man.

Jun 6, 7:57 PM

Simone (Guest): yes.. sigh.. can’t wait for the moment when the veil lifts

Jun 6, 7:57 PM

Bettychao (Guest): Sr Susan today I did go to emmenual Chinese Christian church I hear a sermon that the deacon and pastors must serve God and serve Gods people the church pastor say we can share Gods love to other religion that who don’t know God and we share the gaspel to other religion who don’t know God but pray for them and bring then to God and back to the church. Don’t judge each other just say Jesus love you and he care about you and pray for them so one day God will bring them to worship him. For sr Susan from betty

Jun 6, 7:57 PM

Simone (Guest): I hear you Dawn – sitting in His presence – can be the sweetest thing

Jun 6, 7:58 PM

Elena (Guest): I’m reading the medieval classic “Everyman” with my 7th and 8th graders. The main theme is that dedicating one’s life to material things and pleasures is its own “reward,” which is finite and ultimately leads you away from God’s Life in to death.

VisitationSiste: Yes you are talking about evangelization Betty and maybe ecumenism too

Jun 6, 8:00 PM

VisitationSiste: To see how all of life fits together, we will want to hear it over and over again

Jun 6, 8:00 PM

Bettychao (Guest): What is the ecumenism can you explained to me.

Jun 6, 8:00 PM

VisitationSiste: Different religions working together

PM

Carroll V (Guest): Yes- when the ” veil is lifted,” we will understand so much more of how our good God used each little sacrifice for a greater good and to draw us more closely to Himself, and that will bring with it great consolation I think.

Jun 6, 8:02 PM

VisitationSiste: I recently read a book by Dr Brant Pitre about the Last Supper and Eucharist. What great forerunners to it all were given to the chosen people. It really opened my eyes to God’s tapestry, if you will

4. How can we gain more confidence in God and His ability to work in our lives?

Jun 6, 8:05 PM

Elena (Guest): Sister, this is a pertinent question for me. Aside from praying for that trust and confidence, I look to what He has already done for me.

Jun 6, 8:05 PM

Simone (Guest): oh.. I LOVE Brent Pitre.. The Jewish Roots of the Eucharist? Is that the book you read?

Jun 6, 8:05 PM

Elena (Guest): THAT BOOK IS AMAZING

Jun 6, 8:06 PM

VisitationSiste: Yes that’s it

Jun 6, 8:06 PM

Simone (Guest): seems like the unofficial Brent Pitre fan club is meeting here

PM

Elena (Guest): He’s got another one on Jesus the Bridegroom, I think.

Jun 6, 8:06 PM

Simone (Guest): Yes and Jewish roots of Mary

Jun 6, 8:06 PM

Dawn (Guest): With a ongoing conversion I believe it is reveiled the ways God has acted in our life, and we can begin to trust and have confidence

PM

Simone (Guest): thanks Dawn.. for reeling us back in 7 PM

Elena (Guest): Yes, Dawn – ongoing conversion. Well said. Also yes to what Simone said lol

Jun 6, 8:07 PM

VisitationSiste: The more I review how God has led me the more amazed I get

07 PM

Bettychao (Guest): Some Catholic is getting along with Protestant and they worship one bible and one God and my country Taiwan Protestant pastors and catholic priests they guide all the Protestant and Catholic from the different church they hold their hand and pray for all the Christians because we are the same body of Jesus. We are one body the body in Christ we are same blood in the same blood of jesus. Bettychao

Jun 6, 8:08 PM

Simone (Guest): I had the same thought.. in a way .. by trusting God and seeing how He trustworthy He is.. we are more able to put our trust again in HIM. I see it like an upward spiral somehow

Jun 6, 8:08 PM

Elena (Guest): I think one of the devil’s tactics is try to bliind us to what God has done for us, to make us feel alone or despairing of present circumstances.

Jun 6, 8:08 PM

Carol (Guest): Hi everyone!

8 PM

Simone (Guest): yes – discouragement is a favourite tool in the devil’s tool box PM

Simone (Guest): Hi Carol!

Jun 6, 8:09 PM

Dawn (Guest): hi Carol. And Carroll V!

Jun 6, 8:10 PM

Carroll V (Guest): Elena, looking back at what God has done for me is critical for me, as well… like a ” gratitude list” of sorts… SO much to be thankful for and such reflection breeds confidence for the future… also, though, at times having confidence seems to be a decision- like faith, even in moments of ” blindness.”

Jun 6, 8:10 PM

Bettychao (Guest): Sr Susan. I go to Catholic Church and Protestant church all the time to join worship and studied bible because I want to put all my life to the word of Jesus.

Jun 6, 8:10 PM

Elena (Guest): I like the “upward spiral” idea… Reminds me of Psalm 84 …they make their way from height to height… God shows himself to them.”

M

Carol (Guest): I too have had the experience of looking back and seeing where He was all along. It was a time of great change for me. We tend to think of change as a stairway, but it really is a spral

Jun 6, 8:11 PM

Elena (Guest): I agree, Carroll V, that there is a decision involved in those moments, to whisper “Jesus I trust in You” even if we don’t entirely feel or know it in the moment. That in itself is answering the prompting of the Holy SPirit, to go back to our earlier topic.

Jun 6, 8:12 PM

VisitationSiste: That is so wonderful Betty- to belong to God completely in the way you expressed it

12 PM

Simone (Guest): these whispers are GOd’s favourite prayers I think

Jun 6, 8:13 PM

Simone (Guest): I have some areas where it is so easy to trust – but everything that is connected with my daughter’s health.. I have to gather extra courage and faith to trust

PM

Dawn (Guest): I understand this Simone

Jun 6, 8:14 PM

Simone (Guest): thanks Dawn

Jun 6, 8:14 PM

Carroll V (Guest): Prayers for your daughter, Simone!

Jun 6, 8:14 PM

Bettychao (Guest): Sr Susan I believe the new English standard bible and nab bible is the same bible because all the words come from Jesus? We are worship same God and use the same bible we are the body of Jesus. For sr Susan from bettychao

Jun 6, 8:14 PM

Elena (Guest): The Lord leads us to those moments to build our faith, and it is borne of charity.

8:15 PM

Elena (Guest): meaning, your love for your daughter both makes it harder to have faith, and yet that love propels you ever closer to Our Lord, Simone PM

VisitationSiste: I am not familiar with all the different editions of the Bible, actually Betty

Jun 6, 8:15 PM

Elena (Guest): meaning, your love for your daughter both makes it harder to have faith, and yet that love propels you ever closer to Our Lord, Simone.

Jun 6, 8:16 PM

Simone (Guest): I think it is so sweet of GOD – to invest in the growth of my faith. I really do

Jun 6, 8:16 PM

Carroll V (Guest): Amen!

Jun 6, 8:16 PM

Carol (Guest): I believe the difference between Catholic and Protestant Bible is the four books we have that most Protestants do not

Jun 6, 8:16 PM

Dawn (Guest): He is Our Father

Jun 6, 8:16 PM

Simone (Guest): I think.. I have left a lot of things behind already.. but when it comes down to my daughter.. I cling like a velcro ( in my fears)

7 PM

Simone (Guest): Yes, He has.. and He does not rest, until we find fully back home

Jun 6, 8:17 PM

Elena (Guest): Ooooo that’s saw awesome. We are his “long term project” of sorts. He never abandons us! He saves us through Christ’s sacrifice so that we can be with Him in eternity.

Jun 6, 8:17 PM

Elena (Guest): so*

Jun 6, 8:18 PM

Simone (Guest): a project of love

Jun 6, 8:18 PM

Elena (Guest): He builds us up through the Holy Eucharist and through charity we can build each other up.

Jun 6, 8:18 PM

Elena (Guest): labor of love

Jun 6, 8:18 PM

Simone (Guest): they kingdom come

Jun 6, 8:18 PM

Jun 6, 8:18 PM

Elena (Guest): now and forever!

9 PM

VisitationSiste: so powerful- these insights

Jun 6, 8:19 PM

Elena (Guest): Pride is the root of every evil, indeed. “I shall not serve” in fact

Jun 6, 8:19 PM

Jun 6, 8:22 PM

Jun 6, 8:22 PM

Elena (Guest): I was just explaining this to someone last night who asked what it meant to “offer up” suffering.

Jun 6, 8:23 PM

Simone (Guest): I try to get up now.. make immediately my bed and take a shower right away. Instead of sitting down and having my coffee first. I hate it every day.. but it is getting easier a little bit I find

Jun 6, 8:25 PM

Jun 6, 8:25 PM

Elena (Guest): I am grateful for that, Sister. We can’t all be heroes in the large sense.

Jun 6, 8:25 PM

Jun 6, 8:26 PM
