How do we find the balance between weeping for the loss of a loved one, but not too much? And if there is a hope of Heaven, should we even weep at all? How can we prepare to die a holy/happy death? Can you imagine yourself seeing your death “approaching gradually and from afar off,” as the saint says? Is this what you would prefer? Can you think of other saints who have experienced this? If our hearts are made for heaven, why should we have any attachment to things of this earth at all?
St. Francis says, “our heart should henceforth have more longing for heaven than attachment to earth.” Certainly, we should want to grow in all virtues, but how can we practice this Lent St. Francis’s advice to “particularize them . . . [and] be more faithful in practicing the virtues which I need, and on this or that occasion I will get ready to practice this or that virtue”? Regarding prayer, St. Francis says, “There is no need to use words, even interior ones; it is enough to raise up your hear

VisitationSiste: wonderful!
Mar 20, 7:30 PM
SchoolOfHoliness: Interesting that Teresa of Avila also did that with her monasteries
Mar 20, 7:30 PM
SchoolOfHoliness: putting them under the protection of St. Joseph I mean
Mar 20, 7:31 PM
Mary (Guest): Yes, for St Joseph is the Pillar of Families & Terror of Demons
Mar 20, 7:31 PM
VisitationSiste: He followed her I think because he often speaks of her as “Mother Teresa”
Mar 20, 7:31 PM
SchoolOfHoliness: Hi Mary – this is Simone – I cannot change the name here..

Mar 20, 7:32 PM
SchoolOfHoliness: who do you mean Sr. Susan? ( contemporary Mother Theresa)?
Mar 20, 7:32 PM
VisitationSiste: Would you like that- I will
Mar 20, 7:32 PM
SchoolOfHoliness: awww Carol – that is a sweet thought
Mar 20, 7:32 PM
VisitationSiste: I mean St Thersa of Calcutta
7:32 PM
SchoolOfHoliness: Hi Dawn. Long time no hear (it’s me Simone) —
Mar 20, 7:33 PM
SchoolOfHoliness: And Hi Ruth.. lovely.. full house
Mar 20, 7:33 PM
Carol (Guest): Yes, our little group needs him too
:34 PM
VisitationSiste: Guess I’ll begin with Q 1 then: How do we find the balance between weeping for the loss of a loved one, but not too much? And if there is a hope of Heaven, should we even weep at all?
Mar 20, 7:34 PM
Ruth (Guest): Hi Everyone. dawn I was just going to ask if anyone had heard from you. Fires near you?
Mar 20, 7:34 PM
Dawn (Guest): no fires near us.
Mar 20, 7:34 PM
Dawn (Guest): that I know of!

Living Jesus Chat ar 20, 7:35 PM
Carol (Guest): I think there is a component of regrets, of sins unreconciled as wellmas sorrow for loss in deeper grief that doesn’t seem to end PM
Dawn (Guest): in contemplating our own death often, memento mori, I think it is more natural when someone dies. but if we never consider our own death I believe it would be much grieving
Mar 20, 7:37 PM
VisitationSiste: We can grow in different ways in our mourning. St Jane was very devastated by her husbands death and grieved for a long time. She lost so many after him and also grieved but it seems with more acceptance as time went on
PM
SchoolOfHoliness: When I was younger – I had a tendency – to give myself fully over to something or someone. So- naturally – when this thing was taken away from me – or a person left – or died – I was horribly crushed. In the last years I noticed that I grief
Mar 20, 7:37 PM
Dawn (Guest): yes, it would depend on our relationship with the one Mar 20, 7:38 PM
SchoolOfHoliness: differently – Although I am sad – I am not crushed – the more GOD becomes truly my one and everything – the less grief gets me – in a devastating way
Mar 20, 7:38 PM
VisitationSiste: thats probably what happened to St Jane in some way
0, 7:39 PM
SchoolOfHoliness: can you say more to that Sr Susan?
Mar 20, 7:39 PM
Dawn (Guest): thank you Ruth. hope you are doing well.
ar 20, 7:39 PM
Mary (Guest): three weeks ago, my brother went home to everlasting life…He left me at 9 yrs old to join military service and relocated away from our home permanently..we we very close…and I told his family: Joseph has left me again but for his eternal reward..while I am sad because of our earthly attachment, much peace has settled within my spirit for I know he lived an exemplary life & feel he resides in the Arms of Jesus.
:40 PM
Ruth (Guest): and I think everyone grieves in his or her own way. SFdS’s advice seems to base kind of theoretical. Yes grieve, but only a little. Some people’s grief is extreme.
Mar 20, 7:40 PM
VisitationSiste: I think St Jane as she grew closer to God accepted what happened as ultimately coming from his loving hand
Mar 20, 7:40 PM
Mary (Guest): thank you Simone and dear Sister..Dawn & Carol…I loved him dearly
0, 7:41 PM
VisitationSiste: Yes Ruth I dont think one can plan how one will grieve 7:41 PM
VisitationSiste: Yes Ruth I dont think one can plan how one will grieve
Mar 20, 7:41 PM
Dawn (Guest): I agree Ruth. each one differently
Mar 20, 7:42 PM
SchoolOfHoliness: thanks Sr. Susan. – I am puzzled though – that St. Jane – lived her grief quite intense and long ( in regards to St Francis) – for me it almost seemed that she had to accept to live as “one half of a full piece” here on earth – where the other part was waiting in heaven for her. Is that what she called the martyrdom of love?
Mar 20, 7:42 PM
Ruth (Guest): To be not to base.
Mar 20, 7:42 PM
Carol (Guest): I took it hard when my Mom passed. I couldn’t cry for days, to the point they worried
Mar 20, 7:43 PM
Mary (Guest): Aside from losing my parents, this was 3rd sibling we lost and yet this was harder because he went so quickly..I agree each one is mourned differently
Mar 20, 7:43 PM
Ruth (Guest): My condolences, Mary.
Mar 20, 7:43 PM
SchoolOfHoliness: I did not cry for 6 months – and then I totally crashed – for another 6 months – when my Mom died
Mar 20, 7:43 PM
Mary (Guest): thanks Ruth
Mar 20, 7:43 PM
Dawn (Guest): a sudden unexpected death is more shocking to us
Mar 20, 7:43 PM
Carol (Guest): So then I’m not strange
Mar 20, 7:43 PM
Mary (Guest): Agree
Mar 20, 7:43 PM
VisitationSiste: Yes but that martyrdom occured before his death in 1616 I believe when she learned spiritually she needed to detach herself from St Francis interiorly somehow and depend only on God
Mar 20, 7:43 PM
SchoolOfHoliness: no Carol you are not.. and as Sister said.. we all grief very very different
Mar 20, 7:44 PM
SchoolOfHoliness: oh.. ok.. thanks for clarifying Sister
Mar 20, 7:44 PM
Dawn (Guest): everyone I have loved and died it was sudden. no lingering illness .
Mar 20, 7:44 PM , 7:44 PM
SchoolOfHoliness: oh Dawn.. that must be so hard. Sudden deaths are very hard I find
Mar 20, 7:45 PM
VisitationSiste: q 2 How can we prepare to die a holy/happy death? Can you imagine yourself seeing your death “approaching gradually and from afar off,” as the saint says?
Ruth (Guest): Often I think of my brothers. Richard wrote me very, very one letters. And now I have no close relatives left. that’s hard.
45 PM
SchoolOfHoliness: Oh Ruth.. I hope you kept the letters from your brother Richard
Mar 20, 7:45 PM
Dawn (Guest): the lesson is …we do not know the day or the time
:46 PM
SchoolOfHoliness: I would love to have a brother. or a sister. Even if you are mourning now your brothers ( Mary and Ruth) .. rejoice in your memories. Having a brother is a wonderful blessing
Mar 20, 7:46 PM
Dawn (Guest): Q2) best preparation..be in a state of grace at all times
Mar 20, 7:46 PM
SchoolOfHoliness: I know Dawn. We truly do not know
Mar 20, 7:46 PM
Ruth (Guest): I think a violent death is harder to cope with than a natural death. and when medical malpractice is clearly involved that’s harder, too.
Mar 20, 7:46 PM
Carol (Guest): Pray always, daily examen
Mar 20, 7:47 PM
Mary (Guest): thank you..how grateful..thankful..and blessed I was to have my sister & 2 brothers who have gone before me
Mar 20, 7:47 PM
Carol (Guest): Its so tempting to play what if
Mar 20, 7:47 PM
SchoolOfHoliness: oh Ruth.. I cannot even imagine – with medical malpractice. It takes a lot to forgive I think in this case
:48 PM
Dawn (Guest): for Lent I have been preparing for my death in practical ways. arrangements and such. :48 PM
SchoolOfHoliness: I think there is a special grace for dying – when we are reconciled with God
Mar 20, 7:48 PM
Dawn (Guest): and I hope spiritually as well!
:48 PM
SchoolOfHoliness: oh wow Dawn. That truly is a Lenten exercise. Brilliant
Mar 20, 7:48 PM
Mary (Guest): I am thinking of the people in Ukraine..men separated from wifes & children,,how close they are from envisioning death…families relocated to foreign countries…
Mar 20, 7:49 PM
Ruth (Guest): Not much imagining needed. On the cancer ward there were so many examples, AND tributes on all the walls to deceased patients.

SchoolOfHoliness: these are horrible scenes Carol. And no-one should experience this. Traumatic for generations.
Mar 20, 7:51 PM
Carol (Guest): I cannot forget.
Mar 20, 7:51 PM
Ruth (Guest): I did keep the letters. My parents’ too. And even sone letters from friends of my brothers. But a lot of them got badly damaged in the flood, photos, too. Still I’ve dried out many and some escaped the flood waters.
Mar 20, 7:52 PM
Carol (Guest): So when I pray the Seven Sorrows I say the second for them
Mar 20, 7:52 PM
SchoolOfHoliness: I am so glad you could keep and preserve some of the letters. Although I have a feeling that the most important words from him to you – are already written on your heart Ruth.
52 PM

Mar 20, 7:58 PM
SchoolOfHoliness: Thank you Mary. Please pray that God leads me – as I prepare to hold a weekend retreat next weekend. Only problem. Up till yesterday I had high fever and I am behind with my preparations therefore. Additional prayer – that GOD will guide would be wonderful Mary.

:05 PM
SchoolOfHoliness: I find this one of the biggest challenges right now in my life – and actually talked with my Spiritual Director about this today. How much turning to heaven is OK? I know that sounds weird. But I find, that somehow nothing on earth can really satisfy me anymore. What almost worries me – I used to love to be in friendships with other women – and all of a sudden – I sense that whenever I come together with other women – just for “fun” – I feel this “nudge in my heart” – that this is somehow not right anymore. 0, 8:06 PM
SchoolOfHoliness: maybe a “COVID” after effect?
Guest): Mar 20, 8:06 PM
SchoolOfHoliness: you are 84 Mary? You sound much younger
Mar 20, 8:06 PM
SchoolOfHoliness: I am married Mary. But good question
Are you being called to vocation in the religious life?
8:06 PM
Dawn (Guest): I understand Simone! it seems so trifle to get together for pleasure. I walk in the woods and their I meet my friend, 8:07 PM
Carol (Guest): It can be hard. With some, I have no idea what to talk about
Mar 20, 8:07 PM
SchoolOfHoliness: thanks Dawn .I do not understand the word “trifle”, but I know your heart understand my heart
Mar 20, 8:07 PM
Dawn (Guest): I do enjoy my grans. the most and teaching them Jesus loves them
Mar 20, 8:07 PM
VisitationSiste: You could all be living monastic lives!
Mar 20, 8:07 PM
Ruth (Guest): Once on a retreat in the Black Forest I was supposed to lead the Easter Morning prayer. I’d been sick with a fever almost all week. But Easter Morning — having experienced my own “Resurrection” it became really easy and effective.
0, 8:08 PM
VisitationSiste: all the “norms” of life disappear and it is ok
Mar 20, 8:08 PM
Mary (Guest): Thank you..Yes, the years go by so quickly & it is important to keep my eyes on the Light of my Jesus rather than any darkness here on earth..I was professed in 2018 as secular Franciscan and I am very blessed to have been called.
09 PM
Dawn (Guest): this is good to know Sr. from you. 20, 8:09 PM
Carol (Guest): I wish I were. ;but I get to live as a monastic in the world
Mar 20, 8:09 PM
Mary (Guest): Daily Mass and Eucharist is important to me now
Mar 20, 8:09 PM
VisitationSiste: But that is what I mean- it is the essence you are living, less earthly attachments
20, 8:10 PM
Mary (Guest): YES YES YES…
Mar 20, 8:10 PM
Carol (Guest): It is what we strive for
r 20, 8:11 PM
SchoolOfHoliness: I would love to have an outward sign – I feel that people would “respect” my desire for solitude and prayer more – when there would be an outward sign
Mar 20, 8:11 PM
Mary (Guest): we are all striving…crawling sometimes..to end of our journey..Heaven
Mar 20, 8:11 PM
VisitationSiste: You mean like a habit? outward sign?
Mar 20, 8:11 PM
Carol (Guest): I agree Simone
8:12 PM
SchoolOfHoliness: I know I am not allowed to wear a habit – but something similar – something that makes people hold back to ask me if I want to go with them on holiday in Florida for example
Mar 20, 8:12 PM
Carol (Guest): Yes, I feel the same
Mar 20, 8:12 PM
SchoolOfHoliness: good to be understood
Mar 20, 8:13 PM
Carol (Guest): I am usually the odd duck in a crowd
0, 8:13 PM
SchoolOfHoliness: now we are the “odd couple” Carol 13 PM
Carol (Guest): Lol
Mar 20, 8:14 PM
Dawn (Guest): I would very much like to wear a full habit So in lieu of, I collect pictures
Mar 20, 8:14 PM
SchoolOfHoliness: Ok.. since you said it Dawn.. I am outing myself too. I also would love to wear a habit.
20, 8:14 PM
Dawn (Guest): yes
Mar 20, 8:14 PM
Mary (Guest): I sense you are very close to the Lord?
, 8:15 PM
Carol (Guest): I have one, but we only wear it when we gather 15 PM
SchoolOfHoliness: When I am talking with directees – all of a sudden, I have this “vision” of me wearing a habit. The first time it happened – I was in such a shock – that I almost finished the session early – I have put a lot of energy in suppressing this desire in the last years
Mar 20, 8:15 PM
SchoolOfHoliness: How does yours look like Carol?
20, 8:16 PM
Carol (Guest): It is brown skirt and tunic for winter, white tunic in summer
Mar 20, 8:16 PM
SchoolOfHoliness: oh, yes, I remember now – I saw the picture on the website
Mar 20, 8:16 PM
Mary (Guest): Are you in religious order?
8:17 PM
Carol (Guest): The Brothers and Sisters of Charity , littleportion.org. I am temporary professed
Mar 20, 8:17 PM
SchoolOfHoliness: The Daughters of St. Francis de Sales ( with whom I am in formation right now), they say – ” Our smile is our habit” … I feel often naked, believe me
Mar 20, 8:18 PM
Dawn (Guest):
18 PM
Ruth (Guest): I like that: our smile is our habit!
Mar 20, 8:18 PM
Carol (Guest): I like that habit! But the serious face runs in my family
Mar 20, 8:18 PM
SchoolOfHoliness: But I guess, there is some truth to it. When we radiate the love of GOD – people around us will see us as “women of GOD”. Chosen – set apart – for his holy work.
20, 8:19 PM
Dawn (Guest): the helpful aspect is people would not assume you are secular. resist secular dogma! is what a habit would say PM
SchoolOfHoliness: yes, I also find, that it would make life much easier in some situations.
Mar 20, 8:19 PM
Mary (Guest): Talk to your formation director..perhaps some appropriate clothing would be suitable for your profession date
Mar 20, 8:20 PM
VisitationSiste: Years ago many years I think there might have been special clothing for people in religious organizations, like the Knights and Ladies of.. cant think of the name
Mar 20, 8:20 PM
SchoolOfHoliness: good idea Mary. I must confess – there are ideas floating in my head already.
ar 20, 8:20 PM
SchoolOfHoliness: Knights of Columbus?
Mar 20, 8:21 PM
VisitationSiste: no not them
Mar 20, 8:21 PM
SchoolOfHoliness: ok..
Mar 20, 8:21 PM
SchoolOfHoliness: only knights I know
Mar 20, 8:21 PM
VisitationSiste: they wear headgear, maybe
Mar 20, 8:21 PM
VisitationSiste: Knights of Malta I think
M
SchoolOfHoliness: oh.. yes, that rings a bell
Mar 20, 8:21 PM
Carol (Guest): I think habits also let people know we are safe to go to
Mar 20, 8:22 PM
Mary (Guest): Franciscan religious wear only long brown robes but nothing designated any longer for the laity23 PM
Carol (Guest): I’ve found people recognize me as Franciscan even when im not in habit
Mar 20, 8:23 PM
SchoolOfHoliness: because of your tau?
Mar 20, 8:23 PM
VisitationSiste: Mary’s habit
Mar 20, 8:23 PM
VisitationSiste: , we should want to grow in all virtues, but how can we practice this Lent St. Francis’s advice to “particularize them . . . [and] be more faithful in practicing the virtues which I need, and on this or that occasion I will get ready to practice this or that virtue”?
23 PM
VisitationSiste: , we should want to grow in all virtues, but how can we practice this Lent St. Francis’s advice to “particularize them . . . [and] be more faithful in practicing the virtues which I need, and on this or that occasion I will get ready to practice this or that virtue”?
Mar 20, 8:24 PM
Ruth (Guest): Simone, when I was studying in Munich and attended a “Theologankreise” I once referred to an “Ordnugsfrau” instead of “Ordensfrau.” There was a round of laughter, but all seemed to agree that an Ordensfrau is typically an “Ornungsfrau.” I can’t even imagine any more meeting the qualifications!
Mar 20, 8:24 PM
Carol (Guest): Yes. I get lots of si what type of Franciscan are you?
8:24 PM
SchoolOfHoliness: that IS funny Ruth. I am definitely not a Ordnungs-frau – so maybe I should start working on that first?
Mar 20, 8:25 PM
