Why is it so important to make a good examination of conscience and good preparation for confession? How can we avoid letting this lead to scrupulosity? Discuss this quote from the letter: “This is life, the only real life, the only life we should live for in this world, since all life that does not lead to living eternity is death rather than life.” This letter’s recipient, the Duc de Bellegarde, apparently had a conversion of some kind, as evidenced by St. Francis’ acknowledgement that he has chosen to “dedicate the rest of your mortal life to the service of eternal life.” Can you point to a time of conversion in your life? And how do we renew the “first fervor” of our life of faith? Another strong quote to consider and discuss: “receive his inspiration humbly and to put it into effect with the greatest care; else you will be deprived of this grace and glory, a privation the very mention of which fills the heart with terror.” Why is it so important to cooperate with God’s grace? Why is it not enough to just believe? Why does faith require action? Connected to that, why did Jesus warn us that getting into heaven is difficult? “Enter by the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is easy, that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard, that leads to life, and those who find it are few.” (Matthew 7:13-14) St. Francis makes mention of the benefit of receiving the Eucharist once a month. What would the Saint think of today’s life where people can receive communion daily?
