“Repairing the irreparable”

Is Jesus’ call to “make amends” still relevant?
To give a new place to the call for reparation that Jesus makes in Paray-le-Monial, and to shed light on its topicality, even in the present context of the crisis of abuse that the Church is going through.

On December 27, 1673, Jesus appeared to St. Margaret Mary and revealed to her “the wonders of his love and the inexplicable secrets of his Sacred Heart, which he had always kept hidden from her, until he opened it to her for the first time.” Other revelations followed that would shape the life of the saint, making her a “beloved disciple” of the Sacred Heart, following in the footsteps of the beloved disciple of the Gospel of John, and constituting her as a missionary of these revelations. Jesus’ main request was the institution of the Feast of the Sacred Heart, which became a universal solemnity of the Catholic Church in 1856. The events in Paray-le-Monial will have a global and lasting impact. It is no exaggeration to say that devotion to the Sacred Heart, which is present on the entire surface of the earth, was born there.

On December 27, 2023, the sanctuary of Paray-le-Monial will enter the celebration of the jubilee of the 350th anniversary of the apparitions. This anniversary will last 1/2025 years, until the Feast of the Sacred Heart in 1. On this occasion, the shrine wishes to honor its mission of spreading the message of the Sacred Heart by once again organizing an international conference. It will take place in Rome from 5 to 2024 May <> and will focus on reparation, under the title: “Repairing the irreparable”.

Indeed, although this aspect is less well known, it can be considered that the events of Paray-le-Monial refer to the spirituality of reparation. The request for the institution of the Feast of the Sacred Heart by Jesus, during the “great apparition” of June 1675, is a request for reparation.

The term, absent from the New Testament, appears quite late in the history of the Church, as part of the movement of conversion and penance induced by the positive response to Christ’s call to follow him. Following the events of Paray-le-Monial, reparation took a prominent place6 in the spirituality of the Church, until the great anthropological turning point of the 1970s, when it declined very quickly.

Why take an interest in it again or bring it up to date?

The demand for reparation is central to Paray-le-Monial. It is not possible to hide it without amputating the “message” of an essential part. It is therefore up to the shrine to find ways of accessing this request of Christ and to propose a new actuality of it.
