SrSusan (Guest): Is it born out of a self-interested desire to be totally empty and filled with God? Is it, in fact, a selfish/self-centered pursuit?

May 26, 3:20 PM

SrSusan (Guest): Will be here but maybe a little late

May 26, 3:20 PM

SrSusan (Guest): hope you see the message!

May 26, 4:34 PM

SrSusan (Guest): q this fits in with a retreat: What does it mean to prepare our souls for something? How can we do this?

May 26, 4:35 PM

Simone (Guest): I would be interested – what can this “something”be?

May 26, 4:35 PM

Simone (Guest): I prepared my soul for my consecration last year.

May 26, 4:35 PM

Simone (Guest): We prepare our souls for Easter and Christmas I guess

May 26, 4:36 PMSimone (Guest): preparing our soul.. is maybe taking every distraction away.. intentionally

May 26, 4:36 PMSimone (Guest): why is no-one saying something? Help me out ladies!

May 26, 4:36 PM

Rhodylyn (Guest): First immerse oneself in the presence of God. Maybe then we can begin to empty ourselves from the cares of this world.

May 26, 4:36 PM

SrSusan (Guest): when I was preparing for vows I prepared with the Song of Songs and other Scripture passagesMay 26, 4:37 PMSimone (Guest)oh.. that is so so wonderful Sr. Susan

May 26, 4:37 PM

Simone (Guest): Song of Songs.. so beautiful

May 26, 4:37 PM

Simone (Guest): I love what you wrote Rhodylynn

May 26, 4:37 PMDawn (Guest): preparing our souls…for self renunciation?

May 26, 4:38 PM

Simone (Guest): that fits with the letter Dawn

May 26, 4:38 PM

SrSusan (Guest): St Jane did so

May 26, 4:38 PM

Simone (Guest): what do you mean by that Sister?

May 26, 4:38 PM

SrSusan (Guest): When St Francis was leading her to depend only on God in the 1616 retreat she had

May 26, 4:40 PM

Dawn (Guest): what the newsletter speaks of, a letter to St Jane from St Francis

May 26, 4:40 PM

SrSusan (Guest): yes

May 26, 4:41 PMSrSusan (Guest): q What is self-renunciation

May 26, 4:41 PM

Simone (Guest): does that go hand in hand with abandonment to God’s will?

May 26, 4:42 PM

SrSusan (Guest): I think it does actually

May 26, 4:42 PM

Dawn (Guest): it is dying I think, the process dying to ourself?

May 26, 4:42 PM

Rhodylyn (Guest): I think we come to a point in our lives when we fully embrace everything that happened in the past, is happening in the present and will happen in the future as God’s Will.

May 26, 4:42 PM

SrSusan (Guest): we renounce our self will to follow God ‘s will

ay 26, 4:43 PM

Rhodylyn (Guest): That everything is exactly how God wants it to be.

May 26, 4:43 PM

Dawn (Guest): many times in the past I followed my will!

May 26, 4:43 PM

Simone (Guest): to erase the desire of comfort in us

May 26, 4:44 PMSimone (Guest): oh Dawn.. I was and am in some ways maybe still so attached to my own will – that I do not even notice that this is my own will.

ay 26, 4:46 PM

Dawn (Guest): yes, and I said in the past ha. it is a struggle. well expressed Simone ” I do not even notice that thi si my own will”

May 26, 4:47 PM

SrSusan (Guest): Unless we have been fully immersed in union with God I think this is always a struggle or a possibility

May 26, 4:47 PMSimone (Guest): I agree. oh holy unity.. it must feel so wonderful to be free from ourselves – from our wounded selves

May 26, 4:48 PMDawn (Guest): oh yes….

May 26, 4:48 PMSrSusan (Guest): the freedom of eternal life, with God

May 26, 4:48 PMRhodylyn (Guest): So true.

May 26, 4:49 PMSrSusan (Guest): q What would it be like to make it a habit to say the prayer that St. Francis suggests, “tear me away from myself. O self, I put you away forever….”

May 26, 4:50 PMSimone (Guest): I think it needs a good foundation of genuine love of and for God – so it truly is lived out of “love for obedience” and not “fear of disobedience”

May 26, 4:50 PMRhodylyn (Guest): Our love of self can be our biggest enemy at times.

ay 26, 4:51 PM

Simone (Guest): disordered love for sure Rhodylyn

May 26, 4:51 PM

Rhodylyn (Guest): We yearn to be just like Him and not ourselves anymore.

May 26, 4:51 PM

SrSusan (Guest): It depends on one’s personality in some respects- if we pray that prayer and then have guilt when we do not follow thru would not be so good

May 26, 4:52 PMSrSusan (Guest): But not everybody would respond like that to a slip up

May 26, 4:53 PM

Dawn (Guest): these letters, I believe St F knew St Jane well, and could direct her

May 26, 4:53 PM

Rhodylyn (Guest): Sadly some forget how much powerful is God’s grace.

May 26, 4:53 PM

Simone (Guest): AMEN Rosalyn.

May 26, 4:53 PM

Simone (Guest): sorry.. autocorrect.. Rhodylyn

May 26, 4:54 PMSimone (Guest): I had to remind my daughter today that the Eucharist is the medicine for sinners not the reward for saints

May 26, 4:55 PM

Dawn (Guest): are any of you attending the conference in July?

May 26, 4:56 PM

Simone (Guest): which conference Dawn?

ay 26, 4:56 PMDawn (Guest): Eurcharistic Conference , in July

ay 26, 4:56 PMSimone (Guest): oh I see.. no.. unfortunately not.. Are you?

May 26, 4:56 PMRhodylyn (Guest): No I am not also.

May 26, 4:57 PM

Dawn (Guest): not I. I just wondered if any of you are

May 26, 4:57 PM

Dawn (Guest): I would prefer a silent retreat…

ay 26, 4:58 PMSrSusan (Guest): q Why are spontaneous prayers just as important as our timely, disciplined prayers?

May 26, 4:59 PM

Dawn (Guest): they may be a prompting of the Holy Spirit

May 26, 4:59 PM

Simone (Guest): For me spontaneous prayers are more “normal” than scheduled prayers

May 26, 4:59 PM

Rhodylyn (Guest): They truly come from the heart.

May 26, 4:59 PM

Simone (Guest): I am working on that though

May 26, 4:59 PMSimone (Guest): and yes to Dawn and Rhodylyn. I totally agree with both of you

ay 26, 5:00 PM

Dawn (Guest): Sr Susan, how would you answer this..

May 26, 5:00 PM

Rhodylyn (Guest): I sometimes tend to shift to my native tongue during spontaneous prayers.

May 26, 5:00 PM

SrSusan (Guest): I agree but sometimes the prayers written in the past were so beautiful and depthful that they also help the soul to grow

May 26, 5:01 PM

Simone (Guest): I totally agree Sr. Susan.. I am just so lousy with showing up to scheduled prayers in my own house

May 26, 5:01 PM

Simone (Guest): I think that spontaneous prayers make the relationship with God alive, dynamic – personal

May 26, 5:02 PM

Simone (Guest): like me sending my husband and my daughter little messages through the day… to make them laugh.. or smile, when I remind them how much I love them

May 26, 5:02 PM

Dawn (Guest): thank you. perhaps those prayers in the Divine Office

May 26, 5:03 PMSimone (Guest): Rhodylyn.. native tongue? which one?

May 26, 5:03 PM

Dawn (Guest): Or a neighbor gifted me with a small traditional missal from the 1940’s and its beautiful prayers

May 26, 5:03 PM

Simone (Guest): WOW Dawn.. what an amazing gift

May 26, 5:03 PM

Rhodylyn (Guest): O Simone I was born and raised in the Philippines. I am Filipino.

May 26, 5:04 PM

Simone (Guest): how lovely. Here are 4 seminarians from the Philippines

ay 26, 5:05 PMSimone (Guest): Rhodylyn.. I find it interesting that I switch to my mother language more in the Divine office prayers. But my spontaneous prayers are in English usually

May 26, 5:06 PM

SrSusan (Guest): q Was it imprudent of St. Francis to suggest St. Jane to “not keep any sort of nurse”?

ay 26, 5:06 PM

Anna-Marie (Guest): Sister Susan, which prayer book/dare you referring to?

May 26, 5:06 PM

Rhodylyn (Guest): What is mother language Simone may I ask?

May 26, 5:06 PM

Anna-Marie (Guest): Are you

May 26, 5:07 PM

SrSusan (Guest): The Visitation Manual

May 26, 5:06 PM

SrSusan (Guest): q Was it imprudent of St. Francis to suggest St. Jane to “not keep any sort of nurse”?

Rhodylyn (Guest): What is mother language Simone may I ask?

May 26, 5:06 PM

Anna-Marie (Guest): Are you

May 26, 5:07 PM

SrSusan (Guest): The Visitation Manual

May 26, 5:07 PM

Anna-Marie (Guest): Thank you, is this on line?

May 26, 5:07 PM

Dawn (Guest): He did not mean literally ( I think) to give up her nurse, rather to detach from her..

May 26, 5:08 PM

Simone (Guest): Rhodylyn, I am from Austria and my mother language is german

May 26, 5:08 PM

Rhodylyn (Guest): Is the Visitation Manual given to those in formation Sr?

May 26, 5:08 PM

SrSusan (Guest): It might be like Internet archive but not sure

May 26, 5:09 PM

SrSusan (Guest): Yes in our Monastery it was

May 26, 5:09 PM

Dawn (Guest): or indifference. I love the term holy indifference

ay 26, 5:09 PM

Simone (Guest): as for the question. I do not understand what it means “to keep a nurse”. Can someone explain please? thanks

May 26, 5:11 PM

SrSusan (Guest): ST Francis was referring to himself

May 26, 5:11 PM

SrSusan (Guest): as the loving guide of St Jane’s soul

May 26, 5:11 PM

Anna-Marie (Guest): Beautiful

May 26, 5:12 PM

Rhodylyn (Guest): Her Spiritual Director. Oh I see

May 26, 5:12 PMRhodylyn (Guest): What a beautiful relationship.

May 26, 5:12 PMAnna-Marie (Guest): That must have been hard for St. Jane… no doubt grace needed to achieve detachment

May 26, 5:13 PM

Simone (Guest): by the way Anna-Marie.. check that link out. .this is the online version for THE VISITATION Manual

SrSusan (Guest): Thanks for finding it!

May 26, 5:14 PM

Anna-Marie (Guest): Thank you Simone❣️

May 26, 5:15 PM

Simone (Guest): I was just thinking of this today. My Spiritual Director – who had the soul and the gentle Spirit of St. Francis de Sales was taken from me within one day. I did not allow myself to grieve too much.. but at this retreat I noticed how much I miss our Spiritual friendship and the things we talked – only he could somehow understand.. simply because he read the same books as I did

May 26, 5:19 PMSrSusan (Guest): q Is self-renunciation contradictory?

Is it born out of a self-interested desire to be totally empty and filled with God? Is it, in fact, a selfish/self-centered pursuit?

May 26, 5:19 PM

Simone (Guest): that is such a good question

May 26, 5:20 PM

Rhodylyn (Guest): Isn’t it what God wills for us to do?

May 26, 5:20 PMRhodylyn (Guest): If we attain this then we are just following His Will.

May 26, 5:20 PMSimone (Guest): but in the end – it is not selfish.. cause – the dying to one self only can be done out of love for something outside of us.. and love is always sacrificial. I think true self- renunciation is a gift of love .. given away – and not given to ourselves

May 26, 5:22 PMAnna-Marie (Guest): We are connected to the vine and to want to be on the vine is our natural home which is to say we love God and our neighbour as ourselves.. so I see it this way… self centred often is disconnected to the vine and wanting worldly things.

May 26, 5:23 PMSimone (Guest): I agree.. self comfort –

May 26, 5:23 PMRhodylyn (Guest): And this is not fully attainable without His Grace, Love and Mercy.

May 26, 5:23 PMAnna-Marie (Guest): I agree

ay 26, 5:25 PM

Simone (Guest): the desire for self- renunciation truly is the fruit of Grace itself. I do not think that we can even produce this desire.. but we can cooperate with it.. when given

May 26, 5:25 PM

SrSusan (Guest): God wants us to be filled with Himself-that is our purpose in existence

May 26, 5:26 PM

Rhodylyn (Guest): So this is His Will for us.

May 26, 5:27 PM

Anna-Marie (Guest): We see the fruits of this in the lives of the saints

ay 26, 5:27 PM

Anna-Marie (Guest): We see the fruits of this in the lives of the saints

May 26, 5:28 PM

Simone (Guest): more of my Lord.. more of You. I must decrease and you must increase!

May 26, 5:28 PM

Rhodylyn (Guest): So we become united with Him.

May 26, 5:28 PM

Anna-Marie (Guest): We can ask God to “draw near”… ejaculatory prayer

ay 26, 5:29 PM

Simone (Guest): Have I shared the beautiful thought here.. about the connection of time and love? It lead me to think about being ONE with God

May 26, 5:29 PM

Anna-Marie (Guest): please do Sister

May 26, 5:29 PM

Anna-Marie (Guest): please do Sister

May 26, 5:30 PM

Dawn (Guest): June is the month of Sacred Heart of Jesus . St Margaret Mary pray for us!

May 26, 5:30 PM

Simone (Guest): I hope this speaks to you .. as it spoke to me

May 26, 5:30 PM

SrSusan (Guest): Yes and I will pray for you all at our Sacred heart Novena! God bless!

May 26, 5:30 PM

Simone (Guest): Fr. Dumitru Staniloae makes a beautiful connection between the concepts of time and love. According to Fr. Dumitru, from God’s perspective, time is an interval between God’s offer of love to us and our response to this very love. He explains that love, as a gift of oneself to another, always awaits response from the other. Time is that interval that awaits a return of divine love. Thus, within God Himself, there is no time (only eternity), as the interval of waiting is reduced to zero, each person of the Tr
