How can we improve upon the postures we use in prayer to make our prayers more devout and attentive?

SrSusan (Guest): q :Why is it important to delineate different types of prayer?

Aug 18, 4:26 PM

Dawn (Guest): Readyug 18, 4:27 PMCarol (Guest): So that we can talk about it more easily, that we can distinguish it by purposeAug 18, 4:27 PM

Donna (Guest): Because our Lord recommended it (the public prayer our Father, the private “go in your closet pray to God in secret

Aug 18, 4:28 PM

Paula (Guest): I agree with you Carol plus to know which is best applicable in our situation

Aug 18, 4:28 PM

SrSusan (Guest): It is helpful to know how the Holy Spirit is leading us in prayerAug 18, 4:28 PMSimone (Guest): I guess – there are different ways how I talk with my husband for example. When we are in public at the church, or when we laugh in the kitchen.. or when we make decisions together.. so it is just normal to have different ways to talk with our heavenly Father too

Aug 18, 4:29 PMDonna (Guest): That’s really good Simone

Aug 18, 4:30 PM

Dawn (Guest): Good I mean helpful replies

Aug 18, 4:30 PM

Carol (Guest): Yes, our relationships mirror our relationship with Him

Aug 18, 4:30 PMPaula (Guest): sometimes it depends on the situation perhaps if we are very busy or ill all that we can do are ejectory prayer

Aug 18, 4:30 PMDonna (Guest): True

ug 18, 4:31 PM

Simone (Guest): that’s another point Paula… prayer has demands on body and soul.. so our body is in different states too… and our prayer might adjust to that

Aug 18, 4:31 PM

Carol (Guest): I experience that too. But when I can’t even do that I can sing

Aug 18, 4:31 PM

Simone (Guest): awe… so sweet Carol

Aug 18, 4:31 PM

Simone (Guest): those who sing pray twice they say.. right?

Aug 18, 4:32 PM

Simone (Guest): and when I cannot even sing.. I sigh…towards heaven

Aug 18, 4:32 PM

Carol (Guest): Last I heard…

Aug 18, 4:32 PM

SrSusan (Guest): q Why is exterior reverence in prayer important?

Aug 18, 4:32 PM

Donna (Guest): It is very revealing of our helplessness

Aug 18, 4:33 PM

Dawn (Guest): Why it would be wonderfil

ug 18, 4:33 PM

Simone (Guest): ohhh….that was such a game chancer for me – when I became Catholic. Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought that the prayer postures would have such an influence on my relationship with GOD.Amazing.

Aug 18, 4:33 PM

Paula (Guest): it prepares our heart for interior movements

Aug 18, 4:33 PM

Dawn (Guest): Wonderful to hear a habitug 18, 4:33 PM

Carol (Guest): Sloppy posture, sloppy prayer

Aug 18, 4:34 PM

Simone (Guest): absolutely Paula.. our posture definitely informs our interior movements

Aug 18, 4:34 PM

Simone (Guest): but it is also the other way round.. when God moves my heart.. I often have to take a different body posture.. that is not very often.. but it does happen

Aug 18, 4:35 PM

Donna (Guest): We cannot achieve anything that lasts unless we pray to God with head bowed, eyes closed, prostrate on our knees, our whole body

Aug 18, 4:35 PM

Carol (Guest): Usually sitting straight, feet on the floor is grounding. But kneeling seems to me to be supreme

Aug 18, 4:35 PM

Simone (Guest): well…I had amazing times with the LORD actually laying down (on my back – in bed or couch).. for some reason, this posture has been the one where God has visited me most

rs

Aug 18, 4:36 PM

Donna (Guest): Yes

Aug 18, 4:36 PM

Carol (Guest): Sometimes I find myself at prayer and I discover I’ve been holding my hand over my heart

Aug 18, 4:36 PM

Donna (Guest): Wow

Aug 18, 4:36 PM

Simone (Guest): I would give so so much to be able to kneel. But I dislocated my knee three times. It does not go well for me – kneeling

Aug 18, 4:36 PM

Bettychao (Guest): Hi Sr Susan I am comming

Aug 18, 4:36 PM

Carol (Guest): Me too Simone!

Aug 18, 4:36 PM

Dawn (Guest): Just thinking how Marys postures reflected her interiority

Aug 18, 4:36 PM

Paula (Guest): I don’t know why but God never wants me to pray lying down

Aug 18, 4:37 PM

Carol (Guest): We are so alike Simone. I can’t kneel either

Aug 18, 4:37 PM

Simone (Guest): I know the “hand on heart” too.. sometimes I do it spontaneously during mass I noticed.

ug 18, 4:37 PM

Simone (Guest): We really are alike Carol. how interesting.

Aug 18, 4:37 PM

Simone (Guest): Hi Betty!Aug 18, 4:37 PM

Carol (Guest): It is uncanny

Aug 18, 4:40 PM

Simone (Guest): lol.. same here – and in all fairness I root for walking rather then

Aug 18, 4:40 PM

SrSusan (Guest): Q  How does it ,body posture reveence, tie into sacramental theology and significance?

Aug 18, 4:41 PM

Simone (Guest): oh Betty.. you went to the Holy Land recently? How great is that!

Aug 18, 4:41 PM

Bettychao (Guest): I got Jewish candles holder and olive wood rosaries beads from holyland

Simone (Guest): oh.. I bet these candle holders look great Betty

Aug 18, 4:41 PM

Paula (Guest): humility

Aug 18, 4:41 PM

Carol (Guest): Kneeling does show how we see ourselves in relation to God

Aug 18, 4:42 PM

Simone (Guest): I agree.. I also think that it helps to get deeper into our experienced humility

Aug 18, 4:42 PM

Donna (Guest): By remembering that we are nothing if others with us are also prostrate, no one is looking at anyone but God! There is no room for pride.

Aug 18, 4:42 PM

Carol (Guest): There is a power in that

Aug 18, 4:43 PM

Simone (Guest): I want to understand you correctly Donna… are you talking about several people prostate on the floor – praying?

Aug 18, 4:43 PM

Bettychao (Guest): The Bible say curse is abused ten comndements of God

Aug 18, 4:44 PM

Donna (Guest): O, sorry, I meant in Mass all heads are bowed eyes closed even if you can kneel,

Aug 18, 4:44 PM

Simone (Guest): oh.. I see. thanks for clarifying

Aug 18, 4:44 PM

Donna (Guest): but Eucharistic Adoration yes I see prostrations

Aug 18, 4:44 PM

Simone (Guest): I read recently – that the goal of mass is, that all should have the same posture in everything – portraying unity of the body of Christ.

Donna (Guest): before entering church and before leaving

ug 18, 4:45 PM

Donna (Guest): So many need to see the bowing, genuflecting and prostrations

Aug 18, 4:48 PM

Aug 18, 4:48 PM

SrSusan (Guest): welcome annette

SrSusan (Guest): Annette

Aug 18, 4:55 PM

SrSusan (Guest): q Why is mental prayer so important?

Aug 18, 4:55 PM

Paula (Guest): If I prostrate myself before the Lord, I do so in private in a Eucharistic Chapel so as not to show off

Aug 18, 4:56 PMBettychao (Guest): Jesus will come to take care of you Donna

Aug 18, 4:56 PM

Ruth (Guest): I knew Peter is.

Aug 18, 5:01 PM

ug 18, 5:04 PM

SrSusan (Guest): to me mental prayer is meditation- is that how you all understand it

Aug 18, 5:04 PM

Bettychao (Guest): We been love respect each other because Jesus teach us you must love each other all people know you are my disiciples

Aug 18, 5:04 PM

Bettychao (Guest): We been love respect each other because Jesus teach us you must love each other all people know you are my disiciples

Aug 18, 5:04 PM

Donna (Guest): Yes

Aug 18, 5:04 PM

Simone (Guest): In Salesian tradition – it is meditation.. mostly Gospel meditation I think

Aug 18, 5:04 PM

Dawn (Guest): How I understand it

Aug 18, 5:05 PM

Donna (Guest): Ok

Aug 18, 5:05 PM

Simone (Guest): but I think it is an umbrella name for all kind of prayers – that are not vocal prayer

Aug 18, 5:05 PM

Bettychao (Guest): By read scripture

Aug 18, 5:05 PM

Carol (Guest): Is Carmelite then different, with more of a separation between mental and Co templative?

Aug 18, 5:05 PM

Simone (Guest): so.. in a way – contemplative prayer is in the Salesian tradition I think under mental prayer.

Aug 18, 5:05 PM

Simone (Guest): I think so Carol…

Aug 18, 5:06 PM

SrSusan (Guest): I always go back to St jane’s simple gaze on God

Aug 18, 5:07 PM

Donna (Guest): Wow that sounds like St Therese too

ug 18, 5:07 PM

Paula (Guest): Not according to the Treatise on the Love of God…SFDS makes a distinction between contemplation and meditation

Aug 18, 5:07 PM

Donna (Guest): Little flower

Aug 18, 5:07 PM

Simone (Guest): thanks Paula…

Aug 18, 5:07 PM

Aug 18, 5:08 PM

Simone (Guest): please let us know about the closing mass Sister

Aug 18, 5:09 PM

Dawn (Guest): This…”I always go back to St jane’s simple gaze on God”

Aug 18, 5:10 PM

SrSusan (Guest): ok I will let you know

ug 18, 5:11 PMSimone (Guest): the thing is.. in order to pray ” the simple Gaze on God” prayer.. we have to be already real close to him.. I found when I was in the dark night of the senses – not even yet in the dark night of the soul.. that the Simple Gaze on God” became seemingly difficult and I had to lean more on other types of prayer to commune with Him in prayer

Aug 18, 5:11 PM

Paula (Guest): SFDS actually goes into the three points of differences between meditation and contemplation book 6

Aug 18, 5:11 PM

Simone (Guest): I would love to come too Carol.. so much.. and even more if some of us were together there

Aug 18, 5:11 PM

Carol (Guest): Icons can be helpful for focus

Aug 18, 5:12 PM

Dawn (Guest): That was a copy of Sr Susans post which touched me, to remember it

Aug 18, 5:12 PM

Ruth (Guest): When Jesus said where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in their midst, I wonder if he thought about our gathering THIS way, too.

Aug 18, 5:12 PM

Simone (Guest): I have to focus on only one part of an icon. the whole one distracts me too much – often

ug 18, 5:12 PM

Bettychao (Guest): November I will go to Kansas visit my nephews and my sisters and my church father father brien

Aug 18, 5:13 PM

Donna (Guest): That’s great Betty!

Aug 18, 5:15 PM

Donna (Guest): Yes!

Aug 18, 5:15 PM

Donna (Guest): Yes!

Aug 18, 5:15 PM

Simone (Guest): When I returned to the church.. I thought for a while.. that this passage should only be applied to the mass.. but I think differently now about it

Paula (Guest): it is a mental prayer plus a surrender prayer with the Our Father

ug 18, 5:20 PM

Ruth (Guest): I agree, Betty, because Jesus IS our best friend, that this form of prayer is very helpful.

Aug 18, 5:21 PM

Bettychao (Guest): Jesus teach us how to say our father when his friend ask him we can also ask him how to say a direct prayer to our fater

Aug 18, 5:21 PM

Bettychao (Guest): Father

Aug 18, 5:21 PMSimone (Guest): the most meaningful way to pray for me – is the prayer – where God himself pulls me in- and determines the way of prayer and length of prayer… but the most important prayer are probably those – I do out of love and obedience.. and these are then mostly vocal prayer.. because it takes a lot for me to pray them

ug 18, 5:22 PM

Paula (Guest): It’s always best to be in church with Jesus but He is with us even if we are not in His physical presence

Aug 18, 5:22 PM

Simone (Guest): absolutely

Aug 18, 5:23 PM

Carol (Guest): That connection in silent prayer is really a conversation

Aug 18, 5:25 PM

Paula (Guest): Bye BettyAug 18, 5:27 PM

Did any of you have lay teachers or Sisters chastise their students for slouching during kneeling prayers? What

What do you think of this admonition?
How can we improve upon the postures we use in prayer to make our prayers more devout and attentive?

Carol (Guest): I don’t remember, but i’m sure it happened

Aug 18, 5:27 PM

Dawn (Guest): I think a good disipline

Aug 18, 5:27 PM

Donna (Guest): I never did, but was slouching until I heard a Don Bosco YouTube on it! I was just very tired but God gave me the grace to stop!

Aug 18, 5:27 PM

Simone (Guest): I don’t recall that personally. I just remember that it was considered very important how to hold hands during prayer.. and sometimes be corrected by the nuns. But I do not recall it harsh or so

Aug 18, 5:28 PMDonna (Guest): It’s amazing how God helps us change our lazy ways!Aug 18, 5:28 PM

Simone (Guest): I sometimes cannot “fall” or “enter” prayer – if it does not reflect some sort of reverence

Aug 18, 5:28 PM

Ruth (Guest): And since I cannot get to daily Mass any more, at least not in person, The Liturgy of the Hours has become so much more important to me. Even while I was in the Hospital getting chemo, I prayed the Hours aloud WITH the Church Univeral.

Aug 18, 5:28 PM

Paula (Guest): I have seen it done….but it is good because the child was usually very distracted by other peers

Aug 18, 5:29 PM

Simone (Guest): just leaning forward in my prayer chair is often enough to reach that reverence that helps to enter prayer

Aug 18, 5:29 PM

Donna (Guest): That’s wonderful!

Aug 18, 5:29 PM

Carol (Guest): I often watch Mass online if I can’t get there

Aug 18, 5:29 PM

Dawn (Guest): I too have been following praying the Hours.

ug 18, 5:30 PMSimone (Guest): oh Ruth.. I can see you praying the Hours in the hospital. It is a cherished memory for me, the one evening prayer we prayed together. Your voice was so “god drenched”, I could feel God entering our room, as you started praying. Will never forget that

Have a blessed week, all!
