The finest embroidery: An exhibition on sacred art in Moulins By Michel Janva on June 6, 2024

For several years, the Visitandines have entrusted their treasures to the Visitation Museum in Moulins (03), which takes care to showcase the pieces placed in its custody. With the support of the city, the department and the region, it thus reveals the magnificence of sacred art that talented nuns have created for centuries in silence and for the greater glory of God. This policy prevents an entire heritage from being squandered in auctions or destroyed in cupboards by the wear and tear of time. The Visitation collections are particularly remarkable because of the rich endowments that the order has benefited from throughout its history and the artistic genius of several of the nuns. Given the scale of the collections gathered and growing, the museum organizes, in addition to its permanent rooms, exhibitions devoted to materials or objects (sacred vases, paramentics, reliquaries, etc.), great figures of the order (Saint Francis de Sales, the Duchess of Montmorency, etc.). For the 2024 edition, the theme of embroidery has been chosen and visitors can discover, at the Hôtel Demoret, the very rich collections of embroidery. Gold thread stitches, rich needle paintings, polychrome silk decorations, all the elements manifest the faith of these nuns for whom nothing was beautiful enough to glorify their Creator through chasubles and copes that have become true works of art.
