Why is it important for representatives/ministers of the Church to be “sent,” to have a connection to authority in the Church? Why is the Bible insufficient for laying down the mission of the Church?Does St. Francis’s concerns here contradict Our Lord when he said: “For he that is not against us is for us” (Matthew 9:40)?Discuss this image that Protestantism is like divorcing Christ from His Bride.Does all of this mean that what Protestants do is in vain or without merit?Today, we refer to Protestants as “our separated brethren.” Can we find some common ground? Pray together? Work together somehow, especially when it comes to strengthening Christian values in society?Have you known siblings, children, or friends who have left the Catholic Church? Have they left with a good conscience? Was there some other reason, such as a disagreement with the Church’s moral teaching in some area? How can we win them back?

r 9, 4:34 PMCarol (Guest): Because as ministers they represent the Church

Mar 9, 4:34 PM

Simone (Guest): So.. I am not sure if I understand that question rightly.. are the representatives the priests – and the authority the Pope?

Mar 9, 4:34 PM

Ruth (Guest): ! Ias impressed how You managed to keep up even with having to add your name over and over again.

Mar 9, 4:35 PM

Simone (Guest): haha Ruth.. I forgot sometimes anyways.. and then it became really confusing I fear.

Mar 9, 4:35 PM

SrSusan (Guest): I believe that is the underlying thought Simone

Mar 9, 4:35 PM

SrSusan (Guest): but it could also be other ministers, lay ones, like Eucharistic ministers or lectors or religious

Mar 9, 4:36 PMSimone (Guest): I still find it hard to answer this question.. and also found the readings harder to understand this week.. but one picture keeps coming up for me.. and that is the BODY of Christ.. we are the Body of Christ.. and there has to be a mutual connection

ar 9, 4:36 PM

Simone (Guest): I know that for my husband it was THE most important thing..to be sent by the Pope for his ministry. For this special sending.. he laid down everything else

Mar 9, 4:37 PM

Carol (Guest): Yes, to Christ, and we must speak His words

Mar 9, 4:37 PMSimone (Guest): He said.. it does not make sense.. if he is not under the authority of the Pope

Mar 9, 4:37 PM

Simone (Guest): Hi Rhodylyn!

Mar 9, 4:37 PM

Rhodylyn (Guest): Hello everyone

Mar 9, 4:37 PM

Simone (Guest): Hi Rhodylyn!

Mar 9, 4:37 PM

Rhodylyn (Guest): Hello everyone

Mar 9, 4:38 PM

SrSusan (Guest): I think the danger” is an individualism that might go in the wrong direction so the authority centers the ministry

Mar 9, 4:38 PM

Simone (Guest): absolutely – oh my.. you fully nailed it Sister

Mar 9, 4:38 PM

SrSusan (Guest): Hi Rhodylyn

Mar 9, 4:39 PM

Simone (Guest): And we have experienced the horrible outcomes of this individualism so often.

Mar 9, 4:39 PM

Carol (Guest): It is so easy to make ourselves the center

Mar 9, 4:39 PM

Simone (Guest): absolutely Carol.. such a temptation

ar 9, 4:40 PM

Ruth (Guest): I am glad though that Scripture scholars are coming closer and closer together,

Mar 9, 4:40 PM

Rhodylyn (Guest): The laity after mass are sent also to spead the gospel

Mar 9, 4:41 PM

SrSusan (Guest): Not to say there isn’t room for ingenuity or creative self-starters, but it needs to be within the scope of the Church’s supervision or balance

Mar 9, 4:41 PMSimone (Guest): I agree Sister.

Mar 9, 4:41 PM

Ruth (Guest): Very good point Rhodylyn. explicitly!

Mar 9, 4:41 PM

Simone (Guest): I agree Rhodylyn. but there is a difference between spreading the gospel and claiming authority to teach it

Mar 9, 4:42 PMRhodylyn (Guest): The Lord will really lead the ones He truly sends. One who will not divide but unite thechurch.

Mar 9, 4:43 PM

Simone (Guest): Unfortunately I do see a lot of “unsent” people out there – who claim to be sent. and confuse the body of Christ too

Mar 9, 4:43 PM

SrSusan (Guest): Why is the Bible insufficient for laying down the mission of the Church?

Mar 9, 4:43 PM

Carol (Guest): Yes, we need the authority of the Church to keep us from straying into heresy

Mar 9, 4:43 PM

Rhodylyn (Guest): I think that is important for us to be able to discern.

Mar 9, 4:43 PM

Ruth (Guest): Yes, Simone.

Mar 9, 4:44 PMCarol (Guest): Simone, they are all over social media. Most are well intentioned, but they can cause confusion, or even division

Mar 9, 4:44 PMRhodylyn (Guest): The Holy Spirit continues to work in our church and every soul.

ar 9, 4:45 PMSimone (Guest): Yes, I am so glad that the Holy Spirit is indeed at work. Sometimes I just can get myself really scared – but then I remember that I am just called to be faithful, but not to do anything actively on these things

Mar 9, 4:47 PMSrSusan (Guest): I think the Bible is critical but it is not a stand alone holy resource

Mar 9, 4:47 PMRuth (Guest): Even just being faithful requires discernment.

Mar 9, 4:47 PM

Simone (Guest): good point Ruth

Mar 9, 4:47 PM

Rhodylyn (Guest): The Holy Spirit is the Life that breathes in our Church and within us. He calls us all to be faithful to Peter.

Mar 9, 4:48 PMSimone (Guest): I lived many many years with the conviction that the bible is the only critical resource for the kingdom

Mar 9, 4:48 PMSimone (Guest): What a beautiful awakening it was.. to discover the Sacraments, The tradition of the church and the community of Saints

Mar 9, 4:49 PMCarol (Guest): Yes, a d apostolic tradition. Doing as the apostles and the early fathers did

Mar 9, 4:49 PMRhodylyn (Guest): The pious teachings of the saints are good sources too.

Mar 9, 4:49 PM

Carol (Guest): Yes, I left them out

Mar 9, 4:49 PM

Ruth (Guest): They are.

Mar 9, 4:50 PMRhodylyn (Guest): Their lives are powerful source of inspiration

Mar 9, 4:50 PMSrSusan (Guest): Does St. Francis’s concerns here contradict Our Lord when he said: “For he that is not against us is for us” (Matthew 9:40)

Mar 9, 4:50 PMRuth (Guest): That is one important matter to consider when trying to understandSS

Mar 9, 4:52 PMRhodylyn (Guest): I think the concerns here of St Francis is very legitimate.

Mar 9, 4:53 PM

Carol (Guest): I know some of the original,Protestants had theological training, like Martin Luther. Did the all?

Mar 9, 4:53 PM

SrSusan (Guest): Certainly he was of his era and amidst a huge religious conflict

Mar 9, 4:53 PM

Rhodylyn (Guest): But their understanding is flawed.

Mar 9, 4:53 PM

SrSusan (Guest): Good question, not sure

Mar 9, 4:53 PM

Simone (Guest): I wrestle with this verse ever since we entered the Catholic church

ar 9, 4:54 PM

SrSusan (Guest): I think it can mean we are not to be in a violent attitude but accept and encourage further growth

Mar 9, 4:55 PM

SrSusan (Guest): without encouraging the acceptance is not helpful

Mar 9, 4:55 PM

Carol (Guest): And saying you can’t buy indulgences and through them salvation. Luther couldn’t change that from within so he took a stand

Mar 9, 4:55 PM

Rhodylyn (Guest): They questioned the Real Presence of God in the Holy Eucharist. That in itself is against the teaching of the early father’s.

Mar 9, 4:55 PM

Ruth (Guest): Thinking about it. Not a big problem with some denominations, but others TEACH that th RC Church is wrong and evil.

Mar 9, 4:56 PMCarol (Guest): Yes. We have rediscovered those writings. Did they all have access to them?

Mar 9, 4:56 PMRhodylyn (Guest): Nowadays there are books written to counter every Catholic teaching.

Mar 9, 4:57 PM

Simone (Guest): I cannot speak for every Protestant person of course.. but the many years we have been in the Protestant church allows me to say with confidence that the Protestant churches are inviting people to use God and their faith in God.. to have a better life.. whereas the Catholic Church teaches that we use our life – to surrender it to God – so that HIS kingdom can grow. These two movements are very contradictory

Mar 9, 4:57 PM

Rhodylyn (Guest): And yet got calls us to love all our brothers.

Mar 9, 4:57 PM

Carol (Guest): Why do they try so hard? Are they not reading the early fathers?

Mar 9, 4:57 PM

Ruth (Guest): About 30 years ago, 8 seem to remember there was a lot of talk about making Martin Luther a Saint of the RC. Hur h.

Mar 9, 4:58 PMRuth (Guest): Church.

Mar 9, 4:58 PM

Rhodylyn (Guest): Some have not discovered yet.

Mar 9, 4:58 PM

Simone (Guest): I think the Protestant Church nowadays is not what Martin Luther had in mind.

Mar 9, 4:58 PM

SrSusan (Guest): very different approaches, yes Simone

Mar 9, 4:58 PM

Carol (Guest): Reall? I missed that

Mar 9, 4:59 PMRhodylyn (Guest): Even the pastors of the evangelical churches .

Mar 9, 5:00 PM

SrSusan (Guest): Discuss this image that Protestantism is like divorcing Christ from His Bride.Does all of this mean that what Protestants do is in vain or without merit?

Mar 9, 5:00 PM

Carol (Guest): They do have their version of seminary thoughMar 9, 5:00 PM

SrSusan (Guest): Discuss this image that Protestantism is like divorcing Christ from His Bride.Does all of this mean that what Protestants do is in vain or without merit?

Mar 9, 5:00 PM

Carol (Guest): They do have their version of seminary though

ar 9, 5:02 PM

Carol (Guest): I don’t know that those who left considered they did the divorcing. They thought those theybdisagreed with had done it

Mar 9, 5:02 PM

Rhodylyn (Guest): Some of the are still blinded by wrong teachings and are not taught the truth. They read the Bible, profess love for God and do good works in the name of Jesus. Those count in the eyes of God.

Mar 9, 5:02 PM

Simone (Guest): Although Protestants do not have the fruit of the coming together of Christ and His bride in the Eucharist – they do have a coming together of Christ and His bride in the Word of God.. and that can also bring fruit..

Mar 9, 5:02 PM

Ruth (Guest): “The Protestant Church” Doesn’t really exist. There are many different denominations with very varying points of view and even in a Roman Catholic Church. There are faithful people who disagree with one another quite adamantly.

Mar 9, 5:02 PM

SrSusan (Guest): I think this is where Jesus statement comes in, but it needs to be nuanced by each situation after all our historical disagreements and theological differences

Mar 9, 5:02 PMCarol (Guest): Thats true. I know someone whomc

Mar 9, 5:03 PM

Carol (Guest): can’t grasp the 12ish different Roman Cafholic rties. For some, their is only one rite and one interpretation

Mar 9, 5:03 PM

Rhodylyn (Guest): I believe in the end we will all be judged according to the measure of our love.

Mar 9, 5:03 PM

SrSusan (Guest): yes

Mar 9, 5:04 PM

Ruth (Guest): But I agree with you, Simone, that this gospel of prosperity is not what Jesus taught

Mar 9, 5:04 PMSimone (Guest): oh my.. do not even get me started on the health and wealth gospel Ruth.. I have seen such bad fruit of that teaching ( heresy)

ar 9, 5:04 PMRuth (Guest): Paul Even suggests or indicates that we should be equally happy whether we live in plenty or in very trying situations like his times in jail.

Mar 9, 5:05 PMCarol (Guest): Yes, or those whomsay we receive miracles by demanding them, by “owning” the prayer

Mar 9, 5:06 PMSimone (Guest): I found it so mean.. when people who suffered really badly physically or mentally.. were told, that they only suffer because they either have sinned or now do not have enough.. or not the right faith.. These poor people were desperate to be healed..and all they got was condemnation

Mar 9, 5:06 PM

Rhodylyn (Guest): Yes because whether in prosperity or adversity if we surrender our will to His Will nothing should make us worry.

Mar 9, 5:06 PM

Simone (Guest): Amen

Mar 9, 5:06 PM

SrSusan (Guest): Jesus had clarified that with the man born blind, it was not sin

Mar 9, 5:06 PM

Ruth (Guest): Amen!

Mar 9, 5:07 PMSimone (Guest): A perfect strategy of the enemy — to try to convince us. that there is a life with GOD.. where we can eliminate all suffering

Mar 9, 5:07 PM

Carol (Guest): Our prayer for healing is always heard, but it won’t necessarily come in the form we expect

Mar 9, 5:07 PM

Simone (Guest): fits in a way to the Gospel of the temptations of Jesus – as we have heard today

Mar 9, 5:08 PMSrSusan (Guest): Today, we refer to Protestants as “our separated brethren.” Can we find some common ground? Pray together? Work together somehow, especially when it comes to strengthening Christian values in society?

Mar 9, 5:08 PM

Ruth (Guest): Definitely!

Mar 9, 5:09 PM

Ruth (Guest): And we MUST!

Mar 9, 5:09 PM

Simone (Guest): Here in Canada.. the one area where Protestants and Catholics are really united is the area of “abortion”.. they walk side by side on the March for Life every year..

Mar 9, 5:09 PMSimone (Guest): thousands of people

Mar 9, 5:09 PMRuth (Guest): Glad to hear that, Simone.

Mar 9, 5:10 PM

Carol (Guest): I think we should find the common ground and work tommake the church whole again. But I hear some say ecumenism is a sin–that we should not celebrate with those who don’r believe rightly

Mar 9, 5:10 PM

Rhodylyn (Guest): I think we should talk to them more of the things that unite us than those that divide us. Like Jesus died for our sins.

ar 9, 5:10 PM

Rhodylyn (Guest): There are still many common grounds.

Mar 9, 5:11 PM

SrSusan (Guest): I guess celebrating vs working together is the distinction?

Mar 9, 5:11 PM

Simone (Guest): I hear you Rhodylyn.. personally I would not see an area right now in my life, where I had the feeling I should cooperate with my protestant friends in ministry.

Mar 9, 5:11 PM

Rhodylyn (Guest): Prayer, love for the poor, family …

Mar 9, 5:11 PMSimone (Guest): oh.. right.. that’s another area.. where there is more and more overlap in ministry.. serving the poor

Mar 9, 5:12 PMSimone (Guest): I guess.. because my main focus is teaching – I do not see so much overlap

Mar 9, 5:12 PM

Ruth (Guest): I wonder why they cannot or have not gotten together over assisted suicide. Or have they? An adolescent allowed to choose death under Canadian law!

Mar 9, 5:12 PM

Carol (Guest): I don’t know. Once I applied to work translating the Bible into native languages. They would not take me because I’m Catholic

Mar 9, 5:12 PM

Simone (Guest): oh.. I can see that Carol.. Was it Whitclyff?

Welcome to our Living Jesus Chat Room. Just sign in, using any of the methods below.

Mar 9, 5:13 PM

Simone (Guest): yup. no chance

Mar 9, 5:13 PM

Carol (Guest): There I was, a trained linguist…

Mar 9, 5:13 PMSimone (Guest): you are a trained linguist? And they still did not take you? WOW.. totally their loss

Mar 9, 5:13 PM

Carol (Guest): You know, Wycliffe won that argument. can we stop fighting now?

Mar 9, 5:13 PM

Simone (Guest): I had no idea you are a linguist. .how cool is that

Mar 9, 5:14 PM

Carol (Guest): I’m out of practice now. That was a long time ago

Mar 9, 5:14 PM

Simone (Guest): still cool

Mar 9, 5:14 PM

Carol (Guest): Im full of surprises

Mar 9, 5:14 PM

Simone (Guest): you sure are

Mar 9, 5:14 PMSrSusan (Guest): Have you known siblings, children, or friends who have left the Catholic Church? Have they left with a good conscience? Was there some other reason, such as a disagreement with the Church’s moral teaching in some area? How can we win them back?

Mar 9, 5:15 PMRuth (Guest): Wow! Do you know native languages, Carol.

Mar 9, 5:15 PM

Carol (Guest): Most I know were affected by the abuse in some way.

Mar 9, 5:15 PM

Simone (Guest): Well.. I was one of them who left. and all I can say is.. that the amazing relevance of the existence and the teaching of the Catholic Church was never really communicated to me when I was young. That made me leave

ar 9, 5:16 PMCarol (Guest): No, I haven’t had the chance. Though I think imhave a Cherokee primer somewhere

Mar 9, 5:17 PM

Simone (Guest): I think that the Protestant church was – and still to some degree is – so much better to “sell” the features of the Christian faith. And people go to the best marketing.

Mar 9, 5:17 PM

Rhodylyn (Guest): Yes, my eldest sister was away from the church for years. My mom prayed and sacrificed for her. Eventually she met a nun who befriended her and cathechized her again. She returned to the faith a few years before she passed.

Mar 9, 5:17 PM

Simone (Guest): Praise be to God Rhodylyn!

Mar 9, 5:17 PM

SrSusan (Guest): The family and people I know perhaps just don’t have experience of that “wake up” call

Mar 9, 5:19 PM

Ruth (Guest): For a while, I couldn’t see what was being posted. Carol, I had a similar experience. School Lutheran was working in a mission in Nigeria. It was for the church of Christ, not the Catholic Church, which is very well represented in Nigeria. I app To join him in a mission hospital there. I had even taken several tropical medicine courses in Munich and And had completed my medical studies, but I was rejected because I’m Catholic. they made that clear.

Mar 9, 5:19 PM

Carol (Guest): We don’t always know our own teachings, somwe’re susceptible to smooth talk

Mar 9, 5:19 PM

Carol (Guest): Crazy isn’t it Ruth?

Mar 9, 5:20 PM

Rhodylyn (Guest): Some people are experiencing so much hurt from life and people that they don’t have any room in their heart for love for even themselves.

Mar 9, 5:20 PMRuth (Guest): I had said that I was most willing to pray with Church of Christ staff, but that I would insist on attending a catholic mass at least on Sundays, even if I had to bicycle the 17 miles each way to the nearest Catholic Church.

Mar 9, 5:20 PMCarol (Guest): That seems like a good compromise

Mar 9, 5:21 PMRhodylyn (Guest): The community gatherings at the Protestant churches are really enticing a lot of lost souls.

Mar 9, 5:21 PM

Simone (Guest): oh Ruth.. I am so sorry.. for the rejection. I know you would have been such a great asset for this misison

Mar 9, 5:22 PM

Carol (Guest): Bring them home to Christ!

Mar 9, 5:22 PMRhodylyn (Guest): At least they become believers instead of atheists

Mar 9, 5:22 PM

Ruth (Guest): Carol, and I was already studying Lingala, and learning about cultural differences so that I could even understand sayings that, with my background would have Been difficult or impossible to understand.

Mar 9, 5:23 PM

Simone (Guest): sorry – my daughter needs me.. have to leave

Mar 9, 5:23 PM

SrSusan (Guest): Have a blessed week Simone!

Mar 9, 5:25 PM

SrSusan (Guest): I hope each of us is drawn deeper each day into this holy season!

Mar 9, 5:25 PM

Carol (Guest): Amen!
