Downstairs, an introductory room devoted to the architecture of the churches built for the Visitation in the 19th century

This is a fairly quick route, but it shows that the churches of the Visitation in France in the 19th century (there are about 70 of them) are almost all different. There is no particular plan, all the monasteries differ according to the place, according to the architect, according to the patron, there are different styles. A room that oscillates between neo-classical and neo-Gothic throughout the 19th century.

Upstairs, two rooms, two atmospheres

Jean Foisselon wants to show that styles are evolving. Decorative art also influenced liturgical art. The first room is devoted to what was called neo-classical. Some churches such as Annecy kept this style even at the end of the 19th century. Artists and architects have a great time inventing furniture that goes with the walls. At that time, furniture, chalices but also candlesticks and sets of liturgical materials were created that were consistent with the walls of the church.

Liturgical pieces from here and elsewhere

Most of the pieces presented in the exhibition come from the collections of “Regards sur la visitation” (RSV) but there are also loans from the Sisters of the Visitation of Paris le Monial, who are keen to preserve their objects and the furniture they received as gifts, in particular for the beatification and then the channeling of Marguerite Marie to the hull in 1864 and 1920 which makes it a rather rare piece of furniture. Jean Foisselon and Gérard Picaud we were lucky enough to be able to access their attics and their reserves: Very beautiful pieces in perfect condition were found.
